The way the media works:

If it doesn't make them money, they bag it.

If bagging it makes them money, they bag it.

Not surprising, if it isn't nsw v qland they give it no credibility, such a shame our international game is hamstrung by merkins.

Personally I can't wait and am massively looking forward to it. So many tasty clashes, just hope weather isn't a spoiler for crowds and handling. The poor png boys are going to get hypothermia in Hull!

It's actually better than average temperature in Hull at the moment. It's about 15 c. Cool for the PNG based players but hardly hypothermia inducing conditions.

Meanwhile, on social media...

#RLWC2013 is currently trending on Twitter in the United Kingdom...

I've noticed a lot of people mentioning it's the first game of Rugby league they've attended.

For those in the traditional media who ask "why do we bother?", I think this provides at least part of the answer.

45,052 was the official attendance of the double header. Well done! Anything over 50% capacity (37k) was a success. A big chance that the semi-final double header at Wembley could break the world record crowd of 73k set during the 1992 RLWC final.

Who were all these journos in Australia saying the RLWC was a waste of time and ppl should watch the 'real' World Cup (RWC) in 2015 instead?

Yeah, Paul Crawley of Newsltd is being particular nasty saying coverage is almost non existent in the UK and not even mentioned on news broadcasts. Seriously, why do these guys do it? Surely a strong international game means more junkets for these guys. We have the worse journos covering rugby league in Australia bar Mascord.

Particularly stupid since it's factually incorrect.

This was the front page of the biggest news website in the UK (arguably the biggest national news site in the world) a day before the tournament started. Notice that RL was also the leading sports story, which in itself is unheard of in this country. We're usually lucky to get a small mention in the sports sub-headlines for the Grand Final or something.

I don't know if this is the place to put this but I just read this on the Gazzetta Dello Sport (Italian Sports news site) Website and it basically translates to That's nice that we beat England but it's not really an Italian team since it's filled with Australians with Italian surnames and who really cares about the 13 man rugby anyway?

Sucks to see. I don't think League is ever going to be taken seriously around the world until it changes it's name.

That's also a pay tv figure, alongside a 40k crowd. Slightly different.

a national figure in prime time

woeful

you won't hear the DT bag it though seeing they salivate over that muppet Gallop

they rubbished the NRL ratings all year that were easily double that and 5 times higher than the other gay league games

more death riding from the News Ltd scum http://www.perthnow.com.au/sport/nr...orld-cup-viewers/story-fn7shzfu-1226747853427

why do we get stuck with this fat slob writing about our game?

if it's not him it's the drink drivr or some other toss pot

Classic Ritchie article. Stick a negative headline and twist on something that is clearly positive. Absolutely nothing to back up the negative tone, not even a f**king twitter post. Then....

But Seven says the match, screened at midnight on Saturday, rated strongly and comfortably beat the A-League derby between Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers.

A Seven spokesman said Australia?s win attracted 159,000 viewers in the five major markets.

"As a comparison, the A-League derby was the most-watched event on Fox Sports yesterday. It did 101,000 viewers across the five major markets," he said.

Apparently eng v aus rated 2.6 million on the bbc and Italy Wales 1 million on bbc2. They are phenomenal figures, ill try and find a source.
