The last tournament made about $5m profit, if this one makes at worst $5-7m that is better than 2013,and that's not taking into account, an upsurge in ticket sales.
Admit at this stage 17,000 Pax is hardly inspiring for the opener.

Thing is wigh AAMI park, anything over 15,000 tends to look full thanks to the design and of the dark lighting at the top of the east/west grandstands. It'll look great from the broadcast. We will get over 20k to the opener which is on par with the last test match there (that i was at). If England push australia and France beat Lebanon, it'll be a success.

Bay 8 (Lower Eastern) and Bay 35 (Northern End) are back on sale? Released more tickets? Who knows?

It's still fairly small money overall. Still hard to be disappointed with a solid profit but one has to wonder when we'll see serious growth. Also with rugby league being the equal biggest sport in Australia vs being a minor sport in the UK you'd think we could do a little better.

The problem isn't how it will look on TV. Storm games with 12-13K can still look good on TV. The problem is if this game doesn't go close to selling out every newspaper and most media outlets will rip the game a new one.

The only saving grace would be if England compete. My concern is that we'll struggle to crack 20K and Australia will demolish England. If that happens it'll put a cloud over the whole tournament. So much is riding on this first match and it'll set the tone for the tournament.

Hopefully it surprises but as of right now I have little faith in the World Cup being anything more than a mild success.

The 17k pax number is for Ticketek only, from what I can see all the areas available on Ticketek are either almost gone or at least 80%.
Outside of this there will be various other independent ticket retailers (viagogo etc), travel groups/packages of which there are plenty on offer, and don't forget all the VIP's and corporate's/sponsors. I'm personally not seeing any reason why this wont be close if not a full house on Friday

I simply can't get my head around how 45,000 turned up for the yawnion last Saturday and the WC opener is struggling to achieve 20,000. Competitivness can't be an issue because the ABs are conquering and they still turn up. It's even more confusing that despite these crowd figures, the WC opener - like the May Test - will convincingly smash the yawnion in tv ratings.. :expressionless::expressionless:

No doubt the RU people did some ticket deals! The exhorbitant $140 ticket price for the eastern and western sideline stands is probably the reason. And that's very dissapointing. As soon as these prices were known I shook my head thinking whay are these marketing people doing?! Should have been half that price and we wouldn't be discussing poor ticket sales in the week leading into a world cup opener! So dissapointing!

I think the difference is the All Blacks atleast play South Africa, UK home nations & Ireland, Argentina, Wallabies, France frequently + lots of other different nations outside of this lot (even out of world cup) while the Roos generally play England & NZ...over & over. It was/is so good seeing that fourth country (France, Fiji, Samoa, Scotland etc) play them during the 4 Nations. The Kangaroos really need to play other countries like the All Blacks do

That would be great! However are you aware of the struggles rugby league endures as a result of 'big brother ' union wielding its power abd influence? Its a tough road for rugby league however strong areas of the code such as Australia should do their bit to help out in any way possible. Even if its making the general public aware of whats going on elsewhere. This would help the general public understand whats going on.

I have faith. Seems to be much better than last time around in Australia.

Ireland v Samoa - 3,100 (8,067)
England v NZ - 7,800 (15,145)
Australia v England 32,000 (36,297)
PNG v Australia - 8,000 (16,239)

Penrith Final - 900 (8,028)

Good work, some figures quoted were way out in some cases double that number showed up.

I think the opener is crucial,a good game should set the scene for the crowds to show up.

I’m quietly confident this World Cup will be a success a lot of the teams are close in ability.

It’s also reasonably quite in Australian sport this time a year. 30 days before the ashes cricket starts..

The PAX is unlikely to include the Corporate Hospitality tickets for Melbourne which we know are pretty much sold out.

As such, that sees another 817 Corporate Suite Attendees, 1,200 Corporate Lounge, plus however many people they have sold Shed XIII and Legends Dinning (comes with Cat1 seats) to.

That brings the total allocated to around 20K. Still not great, but as others have mentioned there are a few other sales channels out there as well plus Travel Package purchasers, etc.

As for Bay 8 coming back on sale, there is literally 10 seats available in there at the back of the bay, so not too concerning.

Bay 35 is more concerning, it looks like the Bay was never really on sale before, with sales in the first 5-7 rows and then the back 10 or so looking like they are on hold...

More promising the other parts of the venue. Bays 37, 38, 39 & 40 are selling into the final couple of rows, same with 15, 16, 17, 18 & 20.

In 14 & 41, the Cat Be seats still have a bit to go, whilst 2/3rds of the Cat Cs in these Bays have gone.

The Cat Cs in 72, 73, 77 & 78 are down to single seats, and the England & Australia Bays are 90% full.

The Cat As in 74 & 76 are pretty much sold, whilst 75 is packed. 72, 73, 77 & 78 still have a fair chunk of inventory left unfortunately... especially 72 & 78...

Anyway, to provide a breakdown of the task ahead, this is what the capacity is for each of the sections of AAMI Park:

- Lower East: 3,414
- Upper East: 5,015
- South: 5,689
- North: 5,903
- Lower West: 3,494
- Upper West: 4,968

Which adds up to 28,483 (with the other 2,017 being Corporate areas as mentioned). With about 1,000 tickets left in each of the South, North and Upper East, plus most of the Upper West, that gives us around 8K worth of either unsold or unknown tickets...
