RLWC2017 Crowd Watch

Tbf fans have to take responsibility as well. There must be at least 17k storm rl fans in Melbourne. Until RL fans show some committment, get off their arses and get behind the sport then we can't whinge if the general public ignore the sport.

Aside from ticket price I'm not sure you can blame rl administration, the promotion for the WC has been pretty thorough.

Fans are not silly though. Don't care which way you spin it, $140 is extortion for what is just a pool game. For a final, maybe, but not a pool game. Should be half that at the absolute most.

100% agree.

I spent half an hour clicking though the various options for tonight's game and went from $150 to $50 for my ticket.

I've used a vpn for other games to see prices and ticketek has either charged me more for not being an Aussie or not even allowed me to buy a ticket as I'm not an Aussie.

Sorry, but that's bollocks.

Glad I'm travelling to see the 'cheap' games rather than the blue ribband games.

Either there isn't as many RL fans as I'd like to believe or we're fisting them somehow.

PS I don't really think that ALL tickets are overpriced, but...

Would have been nice for it to be a sellout but that's ok. I thought the product on the pitch was great . But what stood out the most was how well 1 referee managed the game and how the game wasn't overmanaged with blowing of penalties every 4-5 minutes. It led to a real fast paced , free flowing game.

How is that comparison fair? This is a damn near meaningless group stage match. The final of the RLWC would be much more comparable.

Since when is the price of tickets what determines the prestige of an event? If FIFA made the soccer World Cup final $20 to get in do you think people would suddenly think it's a nothing event?

What makes international league not the pinnacle of the game is because we don't treat it like it is, not because of ticket prices. Practically zero marketing and promotion, constantly talked down by people involved with the game and the media itself (with no one attempting to correct the bullshit). We play bugger all international matches. The clubs and the NRL do little to thing to help and even go so far as actively harming the international game.

Charging $1000 a ticket won't make this a prestigious event. We need to market it and promote it like the games worth a damn. We need the personalities in the game to acknowledge and maybe even talk the game up. We need to make international matches a more regular occurance and not a one off event that feels like it has no history.

What we needed tonight was a sellout crowd. Price the tickets accordingly, sell the match out in adavance and hype the shit out of it. Use what was a great match to build up the tournament.

Instead we tried to squeeze out every penny we could despite how much it would hurt the tournament. With 8K empty seats I doubt they made more money than they would have lowering the prices and selling the place out anyway.

Absolutely right! Its astonishing some of the reasoning fowarded to justify high ticket prices to a code that is struggling against the odds for long overdue recognition around the world.

I went tonight and was in level 3 East gate 3. I was lucky enough to be in between great girls from Swindon and Lyon (France) who I chatted to and had a good time with.

How did you go with the two chicks? Did you have a crack at them.

Not sure what to expect from today’s crowds. After last night, I don’t think we can take much faith from what Ticketek shows on their site. A ‘sold out’ bay is kind of meaningless.

Leaving aside a sold out PNG, hopefully NZ can draw 15,000 and Townsville 12,000

I’m looking forward to tonight’s game at MT Smart - there are 8 of us going. Hopefully they get 10,000 there tonight.

Again, like for the Opener, several Bays that had not been placed on sale now are for the NZ v Samoa match on the lower eastern side.

Like, I get it. Don’t put everything on sale, get the crowd concentrated in one area etc etc etc. But given last nights crowd, shouldn’t the strategy change?

It was a definite shame though that we were looking out to empty seats.

Why couldn't we sell this game out? I love RL more than anything but I'm close to tears with how shittily we run the game. For f**ks sake can we have some leadership that sells out events and promotes our game to the best of its abilities?

I can actually imagine the time when I give up on RL because the administration is so shit. And that kills me.
Agreed

Why would they want to pay for it? It clearly isn't selling out or a must go to event anywhere else.
I’m sure Melbourne appreciated being shown live in the BBC, on German free to air TV, in France and elsewhere.
I just read an article about the match in a major New York publication. Once again Melbourne is mentioned. This is repeated in publications all around the world.

Exactly why the Victorian Government thought they would get good value by bidding for the opening. 6K empty seats is nothing compared to the international TV coverage
