f**k it, he's Dirst from now on as far as I'm concerned. 'Dirst passes to Jenkovic, Jenkovic! The fullback to beat, he cuts infield and kicks for the opposite wing......Burnett, Burnett, YEEEEESSSSS!'

Speaking of forwards is it just me? Or do others agree that Wicks rarely bends the line and is fairly "easy pickings" for opposition, more workman like than anything else.

He's definitely more of a spaces-not-faces runner, with his speed and footwork. Also brings good line speed and high involvement in defence. Certainly more than merely 'workmanlike'.

Sitting here watching the replay on Fox for the first tiime since being at the game

Most obvious comment, Greg Alexander doesn't commentate like he's an ex Riff player , much. He doesn't have anything positive to say, has already said Foran is hstruggling,

which is true - he was struggling and admitted it after the game.

that Semi wasn't fouled when chasing through ,

Also correct - that was a bullshit penalty. We would be all up in arms if that had happened to us. The cows player stood his ground and did not remotely change his line.

the Eels re getting all the decisions etc etc

Surely you agree we got some lucky calls.

It always amazes me how everyone thinks every commentator, journo is out to get us.

Which stats say Mannah is a better player? There are a lot of stats and they need to be looked at holistically. Neither the stats nor myself say Mannah is a better player; just that he is better in some areas and more consistent. It's a lot easier to decide on a value for a consistent player like Mannah, and therefore less risk of overpaying him.

As you say, last week wasn't Paulo's best game, but this probably was. And now all of a sudden you're crowing like a point has been proven? Maybe when he plays like that most weeks you can say we should have matched Canberra's offer. Until then you're still wrong, and Canberra are paying too much.
Never said we should match Canberra's offer whatsoever, 750k is crazy money. We offered 500k which i think is bang on. They are paying for what they think he may get too in the future. You've been talking the bloke down ever since there were rumours about him leaving. It's amazing how much you would be gushing over him if we managed to keep him, because the club can never do any wrong in your eyes........

I've been talking him down since 2014 actually. Too many fans judge players solely on their attacking ability, and they need to understand some of these strong attacking players have weaknesses on the other side of the ball.

We were never going to keep him, just like we were never going to keep Sandow. Once Sandow opened my eyes to the importance of defence in every player on the field I made an effort to look closely at players' work off the ball.

And since 2014 I have conceded Paulo is potentially our best attacking middle forward. That doesn't mean I'll ignore his shortfalls, especially now he's leaving.

It took Snadow for you to realise defence was important? Where were you for our club's last great moment, the 1986 grand final...?

Since then there were about 20 years worth of premiership teams carrying a weak defender or two. Not since about 2005 have teams been able to get away with that.

I thought, like the coaching and recruitment staff, that Sandow would be able to improve. He was only 22 when we signed him.

So since 2005 you say teams haven't been able to get away with a weak defender, bt Sandow's performances from 2012 were what made you realise cross-field defence was important?

What about the missing seven years...? And was it only the fact Sandow wasn't able to improve that highlighted for you best practice defensive structures (i.e. that you only ever learn things after the Parra coaching staff of the day come to learn them)?

I had no reason to investigate it too closely. Teams were still signing blokes purely for their attack, and Melbourne ruined the comp for a couple of years anyway.

Souths weren't happy to see Sandow go. They were the best attacking team in the comp for the three full seasons he was there. It was massive news. Also Sandow's shoulder charge was very effective.

Melboune were always strong on defence, and didn't tend to carry any poor defenders (why would you, when you were cheating the cap?).

Souths only really looked like a genuine threat after Sandow left, and when they paid more attention to their defence across the park.

It's been a big gamble for ages to a club to signa useless defender, no matter how good their attacking skills. Even the best second rowers/edge forwards/defensive centres can't effectively cover the inevitable targeting those weak defenders will suffer. That's why they can still ply their trade in SuperLeague...

Yeah well in hindsight we all learnt something. Nobody criticised Sandow's defence as a reason not to sign him. It was all about 'steering the team around the park'.
