Robert Lui wants first shot at halfback

WESTS Tigers NRL youngster Robert Lui knows he has a tight deadline to work with if he wants to fend off external factors and keep destiny in his own hands.

Lui is expected to get first shot at the No.7 jersey in Tigertown, but only has a few weeks to prove himself before star recruit Lote Tuqiri forces a reshuffle.

Tuqiri is not expected to be back from England and ready to play for the Tigers until at least round four of the competition, and Lui needs to make his mark in the meantime.

Tim Moltzen will most likely start in the No.1 shirt again, however, he could move into the halves once Tuqiri enters the picture to accommodate the dual-international at the back.

This scenario can be stopped if Lui impresses so much in the opening weeks of the competition, that coach, Tim Sheens has no choice but to leave him at halfback.

Lui, who made his debut against the Sharks late last year, wants first crack at the playmaking duties and believes he can make it permanent.

"I would like to get first shot," Lui said.

"I'll give it all I've got in the trials, and hopefully in round one, come up with the prize and try and play consistent footy and stay there.

"If I play good, I can hopefully play in round one, so see what happens.

"I've been training in the halves with Timmy in at fullback, and just looking forward to the trials and round one and see where we go after that."

Lui said self-assurance is the key to him forming a lasting combination with All Star five-eighth Benji Marshall.

"I think we can, I'd love to form a connection there through the season," he said.

"But Benji Marshall is Benji Marshall, he's a freak. He's one of the best players in the league and I'd love to play alongside him.

"I want to improve my confidence and tell Benji and the other boys what to do.

"As long as everything I do is right hopefully the team goes well too."

Good luck to him- but he had better deliver the goods.

Impressions from last years opportunities were not good- nor was his display later on in his U20's team when in the finals.

I will give him the benfit of the doubt, a full offseason and no injuries, I think he could surprise a few punters. In saying that if it dosnt work out lets hope Sheens goes to option B before round 22 as he has in the past. Anyway we should get a better idea next week after the chooks game

He must kill it at training because he seems to get massive wraps from everyone at the club.

Hope he does really well and lives up to the hype.

I'm all for being surprised - it's just that he's never shown any ability as a ball-playing halfback.

I'm skeptical about a Lui/Marshall combination - neither of them consistency in their game and I don't think that is good for the team. Hopefully I am proved wrong.

The other thing I don't get - people like Sheens saying he's been the best at training. Well... he seems to be the only one training properly at half. How can he not be the best?

I'll be quick.

Lui has not impressed me; his running game is half decent; ability as a halfback? almost non-existent from what i've seen

it's pretty much a case of, "i'm new to first grade, i'll hog the ball all the time and rarely pass"

After tonights game Benji should be barred from wearing the No: 7 jersey again.
Didn't do much with the talent around him & they all looked lost.
Stick to 5/8 Benji where your talent can be used to your teams benefit.

They weren't lost, they stuck to the script. Play atrociously for 60mins then, fire up for a bit before screwing it up in the end. The boys did their job well.

the all stars had been training together for one week. benji had previously played with what 3 of them?

he seemed to be restricted purely to the left side of the field, where he had to work with the attacking brilliance of matt cooper.....
