Round 1 vs Warriors

Warriors have a huge pack and that's without Lodge, it would have been nice to have George for this one to match them up the middle. Luckily NZ only had 1 trial game for match fitness, we should be able to run them around a bit especially with amone and hunt close to the line.

Kerr being the weakest link isn't the worst thing compared to how bad we've had it over the past decade. As for goseiwski I think he has earned his spot on the bench.

For this game i would have chosen Burgess over Kerr.

People are going crazy looking at reasons why they aren’t in 1st grade this week.

Sims played no trials and is coming off a niggling calf injury. Needs minutes, correct call to play reggie’s and build from there.

Burgess is coming along nicely so a few games in reggie’s to build fitness and timing will only help him in the long run.

Correct call by Hook in my opinion and hopefully both come through in 1 piece and are playing 1st grade in the very near future.

If Sims and Burgess aren't fully fit I'd rather see them get some minutes in reggies rather than come on in firsts and get busted.
Why does every selection someone disagrees with have to be "political"?!
Having said that... Why Josh Kerr on the bench, Hook? Why?! Must be political.
All correct, but he has named a 24 man squad.
Late change to the bench perhaps, not political but sneaky. M Molo for Kerr?

Dragons: High-profile forwards George Burgess and Tariq Sims have been omitted from the 24-man squad. St George Illawarra are rolling with the same starting 13 from the Charity Shield win over Souths. Tyrell Sloan will wear the No.1 jersey with Cody Ramsey on the wing with Junior Amone combining with skipper Ben Hunt in the halves while Jayden Sullivan rehabs his hamstring. Veteran utility Moses Mbye, props Aaron Woods and Francis Molo and second-rower Sea Eagle Jack Gosiewski will make their Red V debuts.

1. Tyrell Sloan 2. Cody Ramsey 3. Moses Suli 4. Zac Lomax 5. Mikaele Ravalawa 6. Talatau Amone 7. Ben Hunt 8. Blake Lawrie 9. Andrew McCullough 10. Aaron Woods 11. Jack Bird 12. Jaydn Su’A 13. Jack de Belin

Interchange: 14. Moses Mbye 15. Francis Molo 16. Josh Kerr 17. Jack Gosiewski 18. Jackson Ford 19. Mathew Feagai 20. Daniel Alvaro 21. Poasa Faamausili 22. Tautau Moga

I thought the reports on Burgess were positive and his fitness was ahead of schedule a couple of weeks ago , before the trials. Perhaps the coaches were not happy with his performances or his training and want to send a message to him and the team that training & effort in games count. Most likely reading too much into this but I think a fit & firing Burgess ( as opposed to a adequate Kerr ) is pivotable to our chances this year.

I agree. As I said in the George Burgess thread, the run on side and bench front rowers don't look that formidable to me. All would be on notice to perform because there are those like George ready to pounce - or maybe he needs more time to get his hip/body right to enable his bullocking runs. Maybe the team of forwards picked are seen to provide better defence - I hope so!

The season is 25 rounds not 1, if some players, no matter who they are, require some extra minutes in KOE Cup, so be it. Burgess will be brought along slowely and aimed at peak fitness. His contribution will be valuable as his fitness, and the season progresses.
Sims hasn't trialled, and like Burgess, needs time on the paddock, again, his time will come and his contribution will be valuable when needed.

Also, consider the amount if rain thats fallen and I expect a heavy track, not good for those without peak fitness in a high pressure environment. Reggies is far less of a pressure situation, even if the track is also heavy.

I notice also that the Eels, our 1st round opponents in KOE Cup, have Nathan Brown, Bryce Cartwright and Ofahiki Ogden all playing.

Again, the season isn't 1 game, and I for 1 am looking forward to our boys challenging for spots every week rather than the expected to play brigade of the past.

As for Kerr, he gets his chance against whst really should be an underdone Warriors pack. Perform or perish Josh!

He was quoted at the start of his rehab saying he would be fit in May. So playing ressies now is probably still ahead of schedule, but not yet first grade ready.

Way to kick off the season with a Josh Kerr lynch mob thread. Go Dragons.

The Worriers have a no nonsense pack and a backline to match, it'll be a good match up and early test for us.
Defend like crazy and throw the ball around in attack, run their pack around on the heavy track.
Shaun Johnson back is a worry.
Dragons by 3+ in a close one. Josh Kerr MoM !

Dragons 13+
Shaun Johnson will take a bit of time to click.
If Josh Kerr is MOM I’ll be flabbergasted!
Good luck to him though!
