'It was very brave': McGregor proud of young Dragons

The finals equation has got harder for St George Illawarra after Thursday night’s 16-14 loss to Melbourne but coach Paul McGregor was pleased about everything except the result as his depleted team just fell short of upsetting the NRL competition leaders.

With eight of their biggest stars missing, the Dragons matched Melbourne and only lost after a 75th minute Cameron Smith penalty goal.

“It was very brave. I am very proud of the players in the shed with their performance,” McGregor said.

“I don’t think the game deserved to finish the way it did, considering the effort both sides put in and especially my guys, with nine players out and on the end of a possession rate that wasn’t going their way. They found a lot in the second half at different stages so it is a small win within a loss.”

Particularly pleasing for McGregor was the performances of four players who each had less than 50 NRL matches to their name, fullback Matt Dufty (45), lock Blake Lawrie (29) and second-rowers Luciano Leilua (33) and Jacob Host (38).

Dufty ran 178 metres and made a line break, while Lawrie – the only running forward regularly in the St George Illawarra pack this season – carried the ball for 169 metres.

Match Highlights: Dragons v Storm

Leilua was a handful for the Storm defence and produced a number of offloads, including one which almost resulted in a try after Dufty raced into the clear before passing to fellow speedsters Jai Field.

“I think it is one of our best performance of the season on the effort areas and the bravery,” McGregor said. “That’s important for a lot of those players in the shed, a lot of them are early in their careers and some of them are later in their careers and looking for a contract for next year.

“For me as a coach it is hard to wear the loss because of the importance of the time of the year but if you get that type of effort shown and bravery shown and resilience shown at different times, you are okay with that.

“The outcome is not what you want but the performance is there. There are probably five guys there are in their third year in the system and when we needed a little bit more we got a little bit more.”

McGregor was frustrated by the game-deciding penalty against Host for “escorting” Melbourne fullback Jahrome Hughes away from the ball as Dufty fielded a kick.

However, he said the Dragons players will take a lot of confidence from their performance without the likes of Gareth Widdop, Tyson Frizell, James Graham, Corey Norman, Ben Hunt, Paul Vaughan and Tariq Sims.

“We are not getting any luck but sometimes that’s rugby league,” McGregor said. “You’ve got to earn your own and it has been one of those tormenting years but it is what it is and we’ve still got nine games to go.

“We had nine of our regular 13 out and just got beat by a penalty goal by the Storm, who obviously had six out as well, on the back of at times no possession.

“We wanted to win and we need to win, and we didn’t get the result we wanted on the scoreboard and on the ladder but you can only go out there and perform to your ability and effort and they certainly did that tonight.”

Got to hand it to Melbourne , they play a very tight brand of football. In the second half when the rain came couldn't understand why they just didn't bomb away to our back 3 , but they continuously went for the sideline to keep us down in our territory. Similar to how we used to play in 2010 !
If players like Lawrie, Host, Latimore and Leilua created opportunities and then off-loaded to the likes of Field, Dufty, Ravalawa and Pearson we would have won that game last night. Very little second phase play and too much one out running up the middle without a though of off-loading costed us this game.

Successful off-loads brings good gains in territory and the confidence to try even harder to score.

Last night showed me that Aitken, Field, Dufty and Lawrie should be in reserve grade or gone at the end of the season. Lafai just back from injury had better lift his form fast or he will be in the same category.

Although they both made a mistake or two, Pearson and Ravalawa are showing signs of improvement and by end of season may be our best options on the wing for 2020. Nicholls is not a first grade halfback and so I'd say we should be promoting a young junior to fill this position in CC.

We need a decent cleanout at the end of 2019 but more importantly we need a new coaching staff as it was clear that they fell short again last night in the game against the Storm. Would someone tell me why C Smith was not targeted all night and not shut down by our markers or edge backrowers.

I may have missed something but can someone tell me why Adam Clune would not have been an option at half back last night.

Dennis re Adam Clune he is a part timer and dose not have a NRL contract .
In fact he is a teacher as far as I know.
In all CC teams there are full timers and development player and part timers.
Hope that helps

McGregor states "he's proud of the youngsters", and so he should be.

But doing some analysis of this game I find interesting that before last nights game:

Debutantes:
Dragons 0 v Storm 2
Total games (of players) played for 2019:
Dragons 137 v Storm 146
Total career games of all players:
Dragons 938 v Storm 1201

Bit of a difference in total career games, however, Storm are top heavy with C. Smith 398 and J. Bromwich 216
So, take those 2 out and take out our 2 most "experienced" players ie: Lats 175 and Lafai 153 and its a different picture. It now reads:
Dragons 610 v Storm 587

So, besides the 2 most experienced players in both sides we had more players who have played games at NRL level than the Storm.

I wish someone would ask McGregor his thoughts on this.

If your looking at experience what about Mary v Bellamy. That is the biggest difference when it comes to experience and it showed. Bellamy can win you games like last night if not is filthy with a loss, Mary WILL lose you games like last night and still be smiling with a loss.
It's exactly why McGregor will never win an NRL premiership and Bellamy's in the GF every year.

Was probably expecting to lose by 20 +.....Rain and the players having a dig saved him again....the cycle just keeps going around and around................they will probably extend him...not even funny anymore......
I agree mate...and when Widdop, Graham and the likes are rushed back and we win a couple of games towards season end and we finish 10th or 11th the cry will go out from McGrexit that if only we hadnt lost these players things would have been different.....heard it all before

Yep... I think we all know the script by now....we have had 7 years since Bennett left to establish mediocrity as our badge.

I’ve had the benefit of reading the posts (and almost 24 hours since game finished).

My take on last night was that I did enjoy the effort and the team competed (which I can’t say they’ve done every week).

There are some players i’ve had a shot at that i tip my hat to. That’s Dufty, Latimore and Luc. All I can say is more of that please.

There are some players I’ve previously defended, but can no longer. Unfortunately, Field falls into that category. Previously, I’ve put the blame on the team not going forward to give him the time and space needed. Last night, that wasn’t the case.

Unfortunately, there are those who I think need to go. What I thought was clear last night is the pack collectively did their job and more than handled the Storm pack. However, our backs just aren’t up to scratch...particularly our centres.

In other threads, Host, Ravalawa and Lawrie have been questioned. I’m happy with Host. Some poor discipline last night (and dubious penalties as well), but he does his job. He kind of reminds me a little bit of Alan Tongue from the Raiders. He does a lot of work that can go unnoticed. Lawrie has a place in first grade. For both of them, a coach who knew how to use them appropriately, well...you might get more from them.

I really like Rava. Whether it’s a pass or a kick, I have my hands over my eyes, but if it sticks, he is a powerful and beautiful runner of the ball.

One last thing: someone by Jamie Soward a beer please!
