Round 16 vs Storm

My thoughts (most have already been covered, definitely not revelatory):

1. both wingers have hands for feet, certainly not first grade standard.

2. both centres propensity to rush out defensively is a damning indictment of McGregor’s inability to improve player shortcomings,

3. Field cannot play in the halves if he cannot kick...has he kicked at least once in his first grade appearances so far? (No, I didn’t think so either). On the upside, we now know that Jai is physically able to play in the NRL. He will have to choose another position, however (perhaps fullback or hooker) to further his career. Goalkicking is a distinct advantage.

4. Nicholls tried hard but it’s clearly obvious why he’s only played two first grade game at age 30. At times tonight, I wondered if Josh McCrone had made a comeback.

5. under a competent mentor, Leilua would be far more consistent and dangerous to opposing sides.

6. the much maligned Latimore was so strong in the opening exchanges, his absence was noticeable. Why can’t he do it EVERY week?

A big bloke who usually doesn’t take advantage of his size.

7. McInnes’ had a blinder in most aspects, however, his propensity of heading the wrong way from dummy half is problematic, and cost Saints dearly at the end.

8. Korbin Sims continues to play well.

9. Kerr is an interesting proposition. He’s big, runs with urgency (usually), and usually dents the opposition’s defence. He also has a fantastic, quick play-the-ball. Fitness appears to be an issue because he seemingly gets tired pretty quickly. The other issue is whether McGregor will give him sufficient opportunities to demonstrate what Kerr could (potentially) offer the side.

10. SGI finally finds a replacement for JDB (Kaufusi), but...frustratingly...he’s left knee has more bandages than an Egyptian mummy.

11. Ben Cummins strikes again! He was looking to blow a penalty at the first opportunity. He should be deregistered. The undetected, massive forward pass in the lead up to Melbourne’s last try proved to be vital.

Only Mary coiuld find a "small win" in that brave loss. His words not mine. And those journos just patting us and him on the back. Well Done Mary & St George tonight.
Such a small win he has already calculated how many wins we need to make the 8 in the last 9 games..of course though he does not look at the ladder as he did say a week or 2 ago.
I tell you Mary -56 and on 14 points. 18 points will be 8th when Sharks win. We will need to win 8 out of 9...
there you go making the semis..101..seems pretty achievable to me.
BTW for those interested we will be 4 points (2 wins) ahead of last place.

This is also an indication of just how a final eight team series rewards mediocrity.

I actually felt like it was a team worth watching tonight. They played defensively better than pretty much any other game this year, and were not so predictable in attack, although this never really got into gear.

I was quite sure we'd get flogged and that never eventuated. Still another 2 points gone begging but I feel better about the loss tonight than the win last week. Funny season this one.

Seriously, Aitken has gotta go.
He was absolutely woeful tonight.
Cost us a try with that no-effort play on Hughes when he slipped over and wasn't dived on. He has offered Saints zero all year.

I sort of agree with you....but I would only feel better about the loss tonight if we were on 20 points instead of 14

It's got that feeling of a "death by a thousand cuts" sort of season.

Personally, I get more annoyed with loses when I actually think we are a chance in the season. I don't get a feeling there is anything to lose now. This season was a write off very early on. That team tonight, as a collective, had the best mentality of any other this year, just a few drop balls and a silly penalty away from a massive upset.

All tonight's game proves for me is what a dud concept State of Origin is or, at least, how badly organised it is. Why should we - or any other club - have to go into a crucial game minus 5 regular first graders (including both halves), sacrificed for what is basically a marketing ploy rather than a showpiece?
Credit to most of the lads tonight - they were up against it and came within a whisker. One soft penalty to decide it.
I would have preferred to see Mary have some balls and hand a debut to Lachlan Timm and Jackson Ford instead of trundling out Allgood and Kafusi. I also would have chosen Robson at hooker, Field at half and McInnes at 5/8 rather than Nicholls at 1/2 who offered us nothing.
I also would have preferred that Ben Cummins have had a moment of clarity prior to kick-off and realise that he is an oxygen thief and a waste of space and resign forthwith before he could rob us again. Alas it was not to be.
There's always next week/year...

Mate further to yoir comments I agree like you I gave up on the finals weeks and weeks ago and sadly will continue to feel tnis way whilst McGrexit is in charge and keeps persisting with players like Aitken etc....but in the context of us as a club the loss tonight would have been much more acceptable if we were higher on the ladder...and I agree there seemed to be more enthusiasm and energy out there tonight than there usually is...

My thoughts.

Firstly, it was a brave effort, however, the conditions brought the teams closer together, imo. If there was no rain or strong wind I think Melb would have put a score on us.

Secondly, Aitken is as useless a footballer I have seen.

Sorry Samy, have to disagree.

Host is a good starter but he's not an 80 minute player. We need to factor in an interchange for him early in the second half. He's been tiring around the 50th minute for weeks now. There were a couple of shirt grabs there that lead to at least 1 try tonight and there's been a few defensive lapses in previous games as well. At this early stage in his career, he needs a break in the second half.

Field isn't ready for first grade. There were a heap of last tackle plays that died with him. He needs more time in reggies if we are going to keep him. Backup only at this stage.

Luc is good in spurts but also tires quickly if left on too long. They were picking him off close to the ruck and making some easy meters when targeting him.

Lawrie doesn't make an impact. It's like watching someone hit a brick wall every time he runs.

These guys might be good in time, but at the moment they don't look like they are ready for the NRL. At least not week in week out.

Didn't get to see much of Kerr, Kaufusi or Allgood. They weren't on for long. But they seemed to do a reasonable job when they got their chance.
Lawrie is still developing, next year and beyond are his time.

I may have missed something but can someone tell me why Adam Clune would not have been an option at half back last night?
I also don't understand why Timm and Ford could not be given a chance tonight.
I mean do we play Allgood in FG after 5 years as token gesture?
We lost by 2 points tonight and those three may have made the difference between getting those precious two points and not.
Even though Mary mentioned possession as a factor, it was nearly 50/50 at the end.
We lost for two reasons.
Our kicking game was not up to scratch compared to Melbourne and the number of basic errors that we made.
Lafai was invisible again tonight.
Lawrie made 19 runs and defended well but he does not bend the line, at all.
Dufty did well tonight and so did Leilua.
Just don't have the player with the smarts to close out close games.

State of Origin is a joke in the middle of the season. I was proud of the teams effort last night but there are a couple of players who should be dropped to CC namely Aitken and Lafai, both useless as centres. I was expecting a flogging but their defence was excellent.
Have we ever had a worse season with injuries, suspensions, and bad ref calls?

Dufty the only one that looked likely, he was pretty good last night.
What a shame we don't have any attacking potency in our centres(and they're our top 2 starting centres).
We really need to fix that next year, we cannot continue with Lafai and Aitken.
Lafai is just bog average. He looks old and slow and disinterested. Aitken is diabolical with errors. He leaks tries.
We need to do better than these two blokes.

I don't disagree but he did defend well tonight
Luc has all the ability and Talent in the world but lacks Fitness in my opinion but he is getting better. He's certainly putting in at training and not doing as many dumb things as he has been doing. I think kaufusi is worth a go he played solid tonight.
Kerr ran hard wish he would do it more often.
Algood is just average he tried hard.
Agree re field he has to do a lot more
But I was pleased with the effort tonight.
But as you said a bit better kicking game we would have won.
Imo

Yep. I think he defends well early in the game. He just needs a break. Maybe use Luc to replace him 10 minutes either side of half time - that gives him a break and gives Luc some short bursts at a period of the game where he might be able to make a good impact.
