Haven’t seen Nicholls play but many on here say he’s composed with a good kicking game which is what he needs to do against the storm. Just a couple of questions for those that know. can he run & more importantly can he tackle.

Blackasfake , I must confess that I have only seen him on the tele , however I do like what I have seen of him . He possesses a ' crisp ' passing game that allows players to run on to the ball at speed .

Hopefully Mary will have incorporated this at training during the week - getting the big mobile forwards to run off him . Another thing about the man is the kicks behind the goal line defence , dangerous to say the least . Should prove to be a good foil for Widdop on Thursday night .

Nicholls can run the ball quite well and when there are problems with the halves it is usually the five-eighth's passing or defence. In ISP Soward has commented on Field's occasional inadequacies in these areas.

Pretty happy with the selections considering availability this week.
Good to see the guys that stepped up rewarded and hope Nicholls has a solid debut. Best of luck to them all.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has named a 21-man squad ahead of the Dragons' Round 17 clash against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park on Thursday, July 5.

In what has been a decade in the making, 29-year-old Darren Nicholls will make his NRL debut at halfback in place of Queensland representative Ben Hunt.

After two stints at the Brisbane Broncos and South Sydney Rabbitohs each as well as time spent at the Wests Tigers, Penrith Panthers and in France, Nicholls will finally run out in the NRL.

Leeson Ah Mau returns to the team in the front row in place of New South Wales prop Paul Vaughan while Jacob Host maintains his spot in the back row following Tyson Frizell's re-selection for the Blues.

Jack de Belin and Tariq Sims are the other two NSW representatives to miss the trip to Melbourne. Luciano Leilua and Blake Lawrie start as a result, with Hame Sele and Reece Robson the new faces on the bench.

Patrick Herbert and Jordan Pereira's berths in the reserves could lead to NRL debuts while Jai Field and Mitchell Allgood will be hoping to add to their first grade game tally.

Kurt Mann will play his 50th game for the Dragons, coincidentally against his former side and the same stadium he made his NRL debut at in 2014.

At 29, Darren Nicholls will make his NRL debut, replacing Queensland’s Ben Hunt for Thursday night’s showdown with premiers Melbourne Storm.

Nicholls spent the bulk of the preseason on the Dragons right edge prior to Ben Hunt's arrival during the World Cup and has reprised that role this week with Hunt away on Origin duty.

“In the spine there Gaz [Gareth Widdop] and Cam [McInnes] are both great leaders so it's been pretty easy. Back in (the NSW Premiership) I sort of run that ship there but coming up it's pretty seamless,” he said earlier this season.

“You don't have to do as much because everyone knows their spots a lot easier. We both play right side, I've always played right side so that's a bit if an advantage for me as well.”

It comes after two stints at the Brisbane Broncos and South Sydney Rabbitohs each, as well as time spent at the Wests Tigers, Penrith Panthers and in France.

Hame Sele and Reece Robson are the new faces on the bench.

The forwards have been playing with him all year I’m ISP. Which at least gives some familiarity there, while Widdop has the combination with the backline.

I think it’s a smart move to put a specialist 7 there. Gives minimal disruption to the rest of the backline. One thing that confused me was having both Robson and Nighty on the bench.. though I hear Robson played back row on the weekend? Maybe that was as prep for this week.

I didn’t realise Robson was that big to be honest. He’s listed at 91kg but looks bigger than that.

Seemed to handle the running forward role quite well on the weekend. It may be a way forward for him at the Dragons seeing we’ve signed McInnes long term.

Makes letting Havili go make more sense. Robson is a younger and likely better version of that type of player.

Another good decision by Millward.

You could very well be right MilanDragon , it makes sense and also as you have said his fellow ISP players are more than familiar with his style of play and therefore know what to expect from him , a good link man for Widdop . If the Dragons can get this set of halves firing on all cylinders on Thursday night , then that's half the battle won there .

Just an thought, how about:

Herbert to wing
Nene to centre
Aitken to lock
Sele to bench prop/lock rotation

This would strenghthen our bench imo with Lam, Lawrie, Sele and Nighty.
Mann stays on wing and Nichols as the 7.
Just for this game.

That would work, as would any number of combinations but we're still in for little more than an exhibition match with a theme of " How SOO destroys a successful teams season ".
Taking 4 of our starting 6 forwards for a dead rubber is ridiculous. Good luck to the boys and Hunt too for the honour but it should be scheduled so there's no disruption to the regular season. 1 SOO at the end of the year is plenty and don't get me started on mid-season games in the USA, moronic.

We'll likely lose this game but hopefully it doesn't derail our campaign for a top4 finish. This could have been a great game and test for us with all hands on deck. Good luck to the young fellas, hope they do us proud and have some fun in the sun at least.

Go Saints.

That 17 looks like Mary has been watching the forums. He's learning! It would be awesome if we could jag a win down there for the 1st time since 1999, but if we don't then at least some of our depth players get some game time.

I'm happy with this side, particularly Host getting another run at edge & Sele coming onto the bench for a run in the middle. Here's hoping they play really well(with Robson, LL & Lawrie)regardless of result to send a message to the comp that we have the depth. Go Dragons.

The key to a win depends upon just how well the Dragons can contain , limit Smiths time with the ball . He must be tackled hard and often as just about every play will come from his hands . The other problem the red & whites will have is his ever constant jabbering to the referees , only the NRL can stop that .

DRAGONS

Nicholls to become oldest rookie in NRL era

Darren Nicholls has waited a decade to make his NRL debut but Dragons coach Paul McGregor has been preparing for the 29-year-old playmaker to fill Ben Hunt’s No.7 jersey during State of Origin since the pre-season.

Nicholls, who has previously played lower grades for Penrith, Wests Tigers, South Sydney and Brisbane, will become the oldest debutant in NRL history after being one of five players called in to deputise for St George Illawarra’s Origin stars on Thursday night against Melbourne at AAMI Park.

The playmaker, who also deputised for Hunt at the Broncos, won the NSWRL Chairman’s Medal as player of the match in last year’s Intrust Super Premiership grand final and led the Panthers to victory in the State Championship final against PNG Hunters before joining the Dragons.

He partnered Gareth Widdop in the halves during February’s pre-season clash with Super League club Hull FC and has been working with him at training in anticipation of Hunt being unavailable for a match due to Origin commitments with Queensland.

Nichols will become the oldest player to make his debut at the elite level since former Illawarra Steelers fullback Mark Taylor, who played three matches alongside future Dragons coach Paul McGregor in 1994.

According to League Information Services statistician David Middleton, Taylor was 29 years and 323 days old when he made his debut on July 10, 1994 against the Gold Coast Seagulls.

Nicholls will be 29 years and 80 days old in Thursday night's Telstra Premiership match against the Storm.

New Dragons No.7 Darren Nicholls.
Irish winger Brian Carney was 29 years and 260 days old when he made his NRL debut for Newcastle in 2006, while French prop Remi Casty was 29 years and 106 days old in his first appearance for Sydney Roosters in 2014 but both were internationals who had played at an elite level in Super League.

Nicholls is 18th on the list of oldest players, behind the likes of John Lang, Frano Botica, Andy Platt and Tiaan Strauss, to have made their premiership debuts since 1980, but all had played elsewhere at an elite level, including rugby union, or debuted before the formation of the NRL in 1998.

Nicholls, who turned 29 on April 15, will play halfback against the Storm behind a new-look Dragons pack, which features Intrust Super Premiership teammates Blake Lawrie, Jacob Host and Luciano Leilua.

Interchange prop Leeson Ah Mau will start for the first time this season, while Hame Sele and hooker Reece Robinson were named on the bench, along with Jeremy Latimore and Jason Nightingale.

With the Dragons in equal third place on the ISP ladder, Nicholls said the replacements would go into the match against the Storm confident they were capable of helping the club remain as outright NRL leaders.

“We are doing really well as a club,” Nicholls said. “Coming first and third is a good position to be in. We started slowly in the ISP but we are going in the right direction.

“When you are winning, you have that confidence and you don’t want a losing culture so with us winning as well as first grade the club has been successful for most of the year.”

Lawrie, Host and Leilua all played in last Thursday night's 20-18 defeat of Parramatta, while Sele and Robinson have also had a taste of NRL action this season but Nicholls has been waiting for his chance for a decade after playing with the Tigers in 2008.

He played two years in France before returning to play for Wyong, had a season with Souths in 2013, joined the Broncos in 2014, linked again with the Rabbitohs in 2015 and moved back to Brisbane in 2016 before playing for Penrith in 2017.

Dragons forward Blake Lawrie.
"It's been a journey for me," he said. "I played Under 20s at the Tigers and had one year of reserves at the Tigers, then spent two years over in France, playing there, and have been in the Broncos system, at the Panthers and also Souths, then here [Dragons]."

Nicholls was signed by the Dragons as cover for Hunt and has been spent time at training with Widdop. He was rested from last weekend’s 22-18 win over Western Suburbs Magpies in anticipation of playing in Melbourne.

"I have done a few opposed sessions and been in with Gareth in the halves trying to work on that combination," he said.

Leilua said he and the other Dragons players were pleased Nicholls would finally get his chance against the Storm.

“Congratulations to Darren, he has been waiting for a long time for this and it is good that he is debuting at our club,” Leilua said.

The 21-year-old forward is also pleased by Tariq Sims selection in the NSW squad after the pair had vied for the left second-row position made vacant by Joel Thompson’s departure to Manly during the pre-season.

Sims won the spot and hasn’t looked back but Leilua said he was keen to deputise for him against Melbourne and had been told by McGregor to expect to play the full 80 minutes.

“We were both pushing each other but it is good that he got the starting spot and look where he is now, he is playing State of Origin,” Leilua said. “I will step into his shoes, he has set the bar really high and I have just got to go in there and do my job for the team.”

Well if there was ever a time to test the team in preparation, effort and mental attitude then this is it. Have faith in the team, coaching staff and Coach that we can overcome this massive test.
Go the Dragons - do us proud :bangbang::bangbang:

I agree with you about having Nightingale and Robson on the bench. I believe we should have only had one of them on the bench and another genuine forward, such as Ford on the bench.
