Round 18 V Manly

Moylan will never play fullback again and for good reason. Our rubbish attack in the 20m has been an issue long before he moved and Wallace back into the halves? Come on

I just think his decision making is at times very rushed. It was our 4th tackle options that were really poor against Manly. Not setting up a quality attacking option for the last tackle.

Don't get me wrong, he is our long term 6, just struggling at the moment carrying the team with an equally fresh halfback.

Wallace is a short term fix to basically run the team and help out Cleary for the rest of this season. Moylan can still play that 6 role from fullback without the pressure.

That's more a problem with the gameplan/Training than anything.

Hey Fellow panther fans, Have been reading your thoughts and I am totally with you in that I cannot see the logic in our attack. I was in the Eastern Terrace at the Southern end about 20 out and could not believe the opportunities we missed out on. If I had to pin point 1 frustration it would be that we continually threw long passes from dummy half and first receiver which just appeared to give the Manly defence time to get numbers in front of our wide runners. We had no angle runners cutting in or out it was very basic and easy to read. Is this the players sticking to the coaches game plan or NOT sticking to the coaches game plan??

It looked rehearsed to me.

This flat structure just relies to heavily on our play being quick and almost perfect. For it to be effective we need our forwards rolling, with quick play the balls and perfect passes out of dummy half and perfect(and quick) service from our halves. Any part of that isn't perfect and the outside defence is in our line before the halves even get the ball. It just puts to much pressure on everyone.

Further to that it doesn't even play to our strengths. Give Moylan early ball with a deep backline and options inside and out and he will carve teams up, the way we attack really limits his options and time, most of the time he can dummy and go or play short to the back rower, we are too flat for him to play to the centres 90 percent of the time, its just crazy. Our best ball runners never see any early ball, they are relegated to hoping they can take an offload and backing up in support.

Yep. We are 100% not playing to our strengths. Moylan has close the best vision and ability to pick options in the game but we aren't giving him any.

100% spot on, but what leaves me buggered is that brilliant run we went on late last year was on the back of our young team playing their brand of footy totally off the cuff, it was great to watch and we were WINNING so WTF!!

The Griffin nonsensical flat attacking structure

A flat attacking structure works wonders if the forwards bend the line back and get quick play the balls. But we are not and most concerning is... we don't seem to have a Plan B other than 'throw the ball around and hope someone pulls of a miracle play'.

Moylan was playing wider and deeper. Now he is cramped in closer to the ruck, hence his poor 5th tackle options.

Yes, but we had Cartwright in the team then and he added another attacking dimension we are lacking now. Offloads have disappeared from our game without him.

I would also add that he puts defences in two minds because he could kick, offload or do a short pass. The defences now just pick up Yeo and CHN's runs because that is our go to play 90% of the time. No decoy runners, no backs coming inside, nothing. Neither Yeo or CHN really do short passing or offloads. Certainly not on a regular basis.

Yeah good points you make, but I still hope to see more depth and a lot more options around the ball when are in the attacking zone soon.
