Round 2 Vs Bulldogs [THE MATT BURTON CUP]- Bankwest Stadium 3pm Sat

My point I guess is that Penrith are going away from everything that has worked for them since Gus arrived and the procedures he put in place.

He was always vocal that he thought it was best to give the juniors a sniff and then got back to nsw cup to fine tune their game.

And that theory has literally worked a treat and got us where we are today. Look at all our juniors that have followed that system with a few exceptions like cleary.

Listen to Ivan's presser today and he literally talks about it with luai...the importance of nsw cup development and not rushing them.

Imo it would may be detrimental for Staines just to leave him there when there are clearly options in nsw cup like Jennings who are nrl hardened and is a good player.

I just don't get how people can say he is our best option when he has been underwhelming so far. I don't expect anything from him but it seems ivan and co have thrown all the eggs into one basket with him and are going to rush him.

And that is certainly going away from what has worked that Gus implemented and got 90% of our juniors in nrl to the stage they are at right now. Luai the perfect example. Came into got a few tastes, went back down to cup than come back grade hardened against men and took to it like a duck to water.

Heaps of guys haven’t followed that path, not just Cleary.

To’o, Crichton, Leniu all basically have stayed in FG.

Luai was stuck behind Maloney, otherwise he never would’ve gone back.

Gus couldn’t get the team past week 2 of the finals, not sure we should be following he methods.

Really? What's he done to show that? He scored a few tries which were basically catch and score!!!

He has made mistakes both games this year which shouldn't have been made and has had very little involvement.

I have no doubt he's a special talent but he is raw and certainly looks like he needs a fair bit of time, development and more size.

Was only a few years ago r Jennings was scoring tries every week for the bunnies. Very underrated solid player. I have no doubt that if he was on the wing in the first 2 games he'd have done as good a job as Charlie with probably an extra 100m to his name

Pure nonsense. His best play was the try he set up against Cronulla, no one in our team has that ability. Beat his man with pure speed and then threw a beautiful pass in field to Edwards.

He’s not the type of winger for wet conditions, he’s a dry weather guy. Plus the right hand side doesn’t see nearly enough ball for him to shine yet.

The only guy good enough to replace him is Naden. No others come close.

We also won't see the best of him for a couple seasons too. So this is good experience until Naden is ready

Thought we went pretty well today in shocking conditions. The Dogs didn't throw a ton at us but we thats how we tend to make other teams look and you can't do much more than keep a team to nil. Next week will be our first real examination though.

I watch a game like that and wonder how anyone can say Cleary is overrated. Its very easy to notice how poorly teams do without a game manager (see, the Cows and Broncos) but for some reason the best in the business, drilling teams into corners week after week can be overrated. He was outstanding today, had the ball on a string.

Good to see Kikau looking menacing. Wraps to Yeo, Fish, and especially To'o too. Surprised to see people saying Momo was bad. Thought he was ok, despite defending by far the Dogs best player and came up with a really nice bit of work for his second try in particular.

Not overrated but there were 4-5 times where we had numbers out wide and we went short. Lacks the vision is more my issue with him.

Does the basics very well that said

Way too many reactionary takes for mine, it’s two games in with a totally new right side combination. Going to take some time.

Everyone agrees Naden is too good for NSW Cup so are trying to get him in

NSW Cup has a bye this week. So another week of Naden being out

Jennings possible suspension too

So both realistic options are unlikely for a few more weeks anyway

Haha Gus wasn't the coach you goose. He may have missed the mark a few times with resigning blokes etc. But one thing he got spot on was putting the emphasis back on junior development, the creation of the academy and country development paths.

Basically every junior we have brought through in the team now was part of the structures Gus put in place and were nutured by him.

Before he got here our team had hardly any juniors. Now everyone bar a few in 17 is. Coincidence... definitely not.

Without Gus the club wouldn't be where it is today. To say otherwise is stupid. His passion for the panthers and the younger blokes was more than most will know.

Had the privilege of hearing Gus speak at a few corporate nights and he honestly got emotional with how much he loved the club and nurturing the young kids.

Penrith is a development club..that is how we have always had success. So why should Staines be thrown to the wolves?

Yes he has talent, but talent only gets you so far. Just don't want to see the kid burnout and lose confidence because his been thrown in the deep end.

As I said, say what you want about Gus but his junior development and emphasis on that was top notch and has got the club to where we are at today.

Im not knocking Staines. Im sure he will be a gun, I know he has plenty of talent. But sometimes the best development for some players is a mix of nrl and nsw cup. He is a small body and will need time to build up and learn to play against the big boys.

Denying Gus' impact on this club is for undergraduates. He turned us around and no narrative will ever undermine that.

As for Staines, ask Gus if he should be dropped.

I dont think Gus ever looked at it as 'dropping' a young bloke. To him it was just part of the process and development of becoming an established first grade.
