More importantly, we have thrust and speed back at FB with Dufty (what Widdop didn’t have).

Defences have to give Hunt/Norman an extra split second with Dufty sweeping out the back. And both have taken advantage.

Dufty looks more confident this year, especially on kick returns. Running much harder.
I'm just glad the Bulldogs didn't watch last weeks game & pepper him with mid field bombs. Dumbest opposition coaching I've seen for a long time. Well done Dufty.

Some excellent passages of play
Some excellent defence
Some excellent combinations
Some excellent tries
Some excellent performances by most of the maligned players
Excellent cameo from Lomax
But don’t underestimate how shit the Bulldogs were as I think they played their GF last week
Dogs were diabolical and they will have a very long season indeed.
I agree they were diabolical today but they were smashed out of the game by a thoroughly professional opposition who actually played very smart and committed football for 80 minutes and due to the Dogs inexperience they crumbled under the force of it all. Wonderful performance deserving of all accolades, best since last year's Brisbane semi.

Dragons exact revenge on woeful Bulldogs in stunning Kogarah rout

A Ben Hunt-inspired St George Illawarra have silenced their early-season critics by romping home over a hapless Canterbury 40-4 to claim their third straight victory.
Hunt was the chief engineer of a sharp Dragons attack that ran in seven tries to one to surge into the top eight for the first time this season.

The Dragons No.7 was involved in six of the seven tries, including two for himself in easily his best outing of the year.

The only downside was a second-half ankle injury to Paul Vaughan.

The impressive rout goes a long way to restoring the faith of a fanbase that watched their side lose their opening two games by double digit margins.

Then they feared the worst when skipper Gareth Widdop went down with another shoulder injury in round three that has scratched him for most of the season.

But in a silver lining to his absence, coach Paul McGregor has been allowed to finally settle a spinal combination that cranked into top gear against the Bulldogs.

It was also sweet revenge for the Red V who were embarrassed 38-0 against the Bulldogs at the same venue last season.

McGregor’s side hasn’t lost since Widdop’s injury, beginning with consecutive one-point wins before putting on a show for the 13,409 crowd at Kogarah.

Hunt had revamped attack humming from the kickoff, beginning with a 15th-minute try assist for Euan Aitken to score the opener.

Then with the Bulldogs surging into their 20-metre zone, Hunt stripped Rhyse Martin one-on-one before racing 70 metres upfield.

Tim Lafai made it a two-try lead moments later, however Hunt wasn’t done.

Continuing to play on the front foot, the Kangaroos representative produced a cutout for Mikaele Ravalawa to make it a commanding 18-0 lead at halftime.

The avalanche continued after the break, with Ravalawa crossing in the 59th minute and Hunt accepted gifts for the final two tries.

First he pounced on an attempted Kerrod Holland offload before doing the same on a Jayden Okbunbor dropped bomb to set up Zac Lomax.

However Hunt saved his best for last, twice getting involved in a remarkable last-minute four-pointer that ended in him scoring under the posts.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA 40 (B Hunt 2 E Aitken T Lafai Z Lomax J Pereira M Ravalawa tries T Lafai 4 Z Lomax 2 goals) bt CANTERBURY 4 (R Smith try) at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium. Referee: Gerard Sutton, Ashley Klein. Crowd: 13,409.

A very good win. The Dogs have been very competitive lately, so must credit the line speed and determined defence today.

I am getting sick of watching beautiful dragons trys scored from sublime cutout passes being called forward; while watching genuine forward passes left unchecked. Souths scored off a wopper against us. A forward flick pass by Cowboys was waved through the other night.

The refs went troppo after 20 minutes today seeming to ‘save our doggies’ It looked like the old wrestling show on tv where dogs players tackled a Dragons then tag teamed for the next dogs players to use sleeper holds, step over toe holds, twist and drag grips. Were Mario Milano and Spiros Arion playing front row for them?

That's what happens when you have 3 captains. Man with the whistle won't take you seriously. Can we just give the job to McInness, Friz or Graham?? Perhaps Graham as he will berate the refs for that kind of cheating.

NRL 2019:Widdop gone but not forgotten at Dragons
Dragons Den

HITTING HIS STRIDE: Ben Hunt and the Dragons spine have found their groove over the past three weeks. Picture: AAP

HIS spine is fast clicking into gear but St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor insists he'd have skipper Gareth Widdop back in a heartbeat.

Fitting three quality play-makers into his 17 was a tricky juggling act for McGregor with the Dragons stumbling to consecutive losses to start their campaign.

The spine looked to be finding their groove against Brisbane in round three before Widdop re-injured his troublesome shoulder late in the one-point win.

Corey Norman stepped up to ice the game with a late field-goal in his absence and combined with Hunt a week later to nail another one-pointer and seal a golden-point victory over Newcastle.

Widdop's absence also opened the door for Matt Dufty to return to the No. 1 jumper, with the Dragons really hitting their stride against Canterbury on Sunday.

Hunt in particular was outstanding in the seven-try rout, his combination with Norman looking more seamless with each passing week.

It led some to suggest the side is better off without the English International, who's facing a long stint on the sideline, but McGregor was quick to dismiss the talk following Sunday's emphatic win over the Bulldogs.

"When you lose a quality player like Gareth Widdop you never replace him,' McGregor said.

"Obviously [the spine] was a big discussion point over the opening three weeks before Gareth got injured. Everyone had an opinion about it.

"At different stages we got let down in the second half of the first two games. A lot [of criticism] went back at the spine but I don't think it was the spine's fault, it was a team thing.

"I didn't think there was too much wrong with it the first two weeks but it was certainly a talking point. Gareth played 73 minutes of the game against the Broncos and we got that one.

"Duft's [Matt Dufty] come in the last couple of weeks and the halves are starting to combine well which is what you do when you play a bit of footy together.

"The way [the halves] played today it looks like they're forming a nice combination and that's important because we won't have Gaz for probably another 20 weeks."

The win over the Bulldogs on Sunday took the Dragons to 3-2 despite a heavy injury toll and other off-field issues over the opening five weeks.

It's not quite the flying start they've produced in recent seasons but McGregor remains content with where his side sits.

"We've had a lot of distractions around our footy in the first five weeks," he said.

"We haven't had the same 17 any one week, there's a lot in that. In the first two weeks we played some good footy but we didn't play it for 80 minutes.

"The next two weeks we played 80 minutes of footy and won two tight contests which puts you in a good position to play well as we did [on Sunday].

"We're overcoming a few obstacles that have been put in front of us at the moment with injuries. We haven't been able to do that in the past so that's a positive."

You are correct rasaint.
Forward passes aplenty, tag team wrestling with impressions of the late Killa Karl Kox holding down technics on full display.
Dirty dogs.

Have a look at the tries in the highlights. Ben Hunt is in everything but the try off the scrum. He is a freak, worth every cent.

The largesse of Hunt’s stipend gets a lot of attention but you’re right, not only is he worth every cent, he also makes SGI an overall better place with him in it.

When Hunt decides to run the ball, he is simply dynamite.

Our forwards laid the platform smashing them.
It's true your halves can't do anything if the pack doesn't hold its own.
On the hill they had bulldogs braveheart.,and their drums.
They gave it to us heaps after last year.
But we didn't give it to their fans that much.
We shut them up with our play.
I didn't want to hear those drums all game.
They were stunned mullets.
A big mention to Okunbor on the wing ,great game for the dragons.

They tried quite a few but Lewis was getting a lot of pressure from Hunt and didn’t have the time to really hit the torpedoes bombs. Dufty still took quite a few though and didn’t drop any. I don’t like the way he turns his back just as he catches them, I understand the point of the technique but Dufty is moving when he catches the ball. He still looks very iffy under the high ball and will tested by DCE and Cronk.

I tend to agree with this. Dufty gets dominated far too much by the opposition in running the ball back.

That was probably the best game I've seen him play, good on him. But I'm still not sold on him and think if we had a fullback like TVS, Tedesco, Tom Turbo we would be genuine contenders. We have the forwards, we have the halves, we have the hooker, our wingers are proving they are up to it, we have one centre in form and one centre who should be playing interchange with a ready replacement waiting to get his chance.
