I've been waiting a long time for Field to get a run at 6 in our NRL side. Finally we are about to see what Field is made of. If he proves to have the goods he may just finally prove the hype Millward had for him a couple of years ago; only as a five-eighth not a fullback. I certainly hope he does well.

I'm glad that Lomax is selected at 3 for this game. His match up against Herbert the centre combination I always hoped for n the Dragons NRL team.

Very disappointed to see Latimore picked ahead of Kerr and Timm. For this game we need all the energy and vigour our two young props possess to get on top of the Warrior pack of forwards.

I would have also preferred to see Pearson in ahead of Pereira for this game. We still haven't seen him in the top grade and I believe he could be a match winner.

I hope Dufty has a good game and shows improvement in defence. It would be nice if he could defend our line as well as ignite our attack.

Dragons 2019: Dufty and Field re-unite on the big stage

STEPPING UP: Jai Field. Picture: NRL Photos

THEY were arguably the most potent one-two punch in the history of the NYC and Dragons speedsters Matt Dufty and Jai Field will be looking to recapture that magic against the Warriors on Saturday.

The pair last played regularly alongside each other in the NYC competition in 2016, with Dufty finishing that season with 23 tries.

Field had 15 four-pointers and 76 goals, while the pair also combined for 41 try assists in a run to the preliminary final.

Dufty has gone on to play 40 NRL games while Field has been drip-fed top grade action, with all six of his appearances coming from the interchange bench.

They'll play in the spine for the first time at NRL level in this weekend's magic round, with Field to make his starting debut in the absence of Corey Norman, who suffered a broken cheekbone against the Eels last week.

Dufty says he's relishing the chance to re-stoke what was such a potent attacking fire three years ago.

"It was definitely a fun season that one, me and Fieldy were just going out and having fun and doing whatever we wanted," Dufty said.

"I can't remember if there was a [try-scoring] competition but there probably was at the time because we compete in everything.

"Normy's obviously a big loss but I'm really excited to be back playing with Fieldy. I've probably played over a hundred games with him so I know what he can do and everyone at the club knows what he can do and how exciting he is.

"He's just ready to go out there and show everyone else."

The first grade start is a reward for the 21-year-old's patience, having been forced to bide his time behind first-choice halves Gareth Widdop and Ben Hunt the past two seasons.

Norman's pushed Field a further rung down the ladder before he joined a lengthy injury list that includes Widdop and Korbin Sims.

It leaves Dufty confident his longtime junior teammate is ready to make the most of his opportunity.

"He's one of those players you want in your team because he can break games open wherever he's playing," Dufty said.

"I know he's excited. He played a few [first grade] games a couple a years ago and I think he's matured a lot since then.

"He's not just all about the fancy plays, he's about those one per-centers now and he does what he needs to do to win footy games.

"With Hunty coming to the club and then Normy this year, it's been a bit hard but he's waited patiently, he's worked hard and now he's got his opportunity."

It's a mentality Dufty's had to lean on himself this season, with Norman's arrival and Widdop's shift to fullback seemingly leaving him on the outer.

It saw him deployed from the bench before Widdop suffered a third shoulder dislocation against Brisbane in round three. It saw Dufty return to his preferred No. 1 jumper and, with Widdop still sidelined long-term, he has no intention of giving it up.

"Footy's a pretty cut-throat game and you can never say never in the squad because every team gets injuries," Dufty said.

"I knew my role at the start of the year and I was just going to do whatever I needed to to get the boys over the line and fill in where I had to.

"We've been a bit unlucky this year with two of our spine going down but now me and Fieldy have got an opportunity.

"It's obviously not good what's happened with Gaz but that's footy sometimes and I'm ready to take that opportunity with both hands."

DRAGONS

Dragons need to improve says Lafai

An honest Tim Lafai said the Dragons simply weren't good enough against the Eels and that a repeat of last year’s run to the finals is a long way off unless they fix their problems.

Last year the Dragons set themselves up for the finals early on, claiming eight victories in their first ten matches, but this season they’re off the pace with a 4-4 record.

The Dragons have lost their past two games after going down 32-18 to the Eels.

In the second half of Sunday’s match the Dragons welcomed Parramatta back into the game, letting in two tries in the first 10 minutes which gave the Eels a 16-14 lead.

The Dragons fought their way back to level up at 18-all heading into the final quarter, but after conceding six penalties to Parramatta’s one (the Eels had 57% of possession in the second half), mixed with some half-hearted defensive efforts, they basically handed the home team a victory.

"Our standards are just not good enough at the moment", Lafai told NRL.com.

"The message in the sheds from the coach at half-time was simple: we go out there, get to the end of our sets and we will go a long way in getting the result. We went out there and did the complete opposite."

Warriors v Dragons - Magic Round

Heading into the NRL's inaugural Magic Round, Lafai said redemption was high on the agenda.

The Dragons are preparing to take on former teammate Leeson Ah Mau.

Lafai said although he missed having one of this closest mates around, he won’t be trying to get anywhere close to him come Saturday night when they face the Warriors.

"I do miss having him around - he's a big soft giant,” Lafai said.

"He always put the team first and he's one to let his footy do the talking. But in saying that when he does offer his opinion everyone listens.

"I'm looking forward to versing him but I'll definitely be dodging him in the middle there because everyone has seen how Leeson can hit.”

Not only will the Dragons be trying to avoid their third consecutive loss, they will have to figure out a way to do it without five-eighth Corey Norman after he underwent surgery on Tuesday for a fractured cheek.

With Norman now joining Gareth Widdop (shoulder), Korbin Sims (broken arm) and Jack de Belin (stood down) on the sideline, Lafai expects replacement five-eighth Jai Field to hold his own.

Match Highlights: Eels v Dragons

"Losing Tyse [Tyson Frizell] at the start and then Normy [Corey Norman] in the second half was a huge blow to our team," Lafai said.

"Although Tyse was a huge loss, we had the forward pack to cover him when he went down but when you lose your five-eighth it’s a bit different.

"We've been watching Jai's games in Canterbury Cup and he's been doing really well.

"He's bulked up and he's been doing the little things right to get himself into that top 21. If he gets the opportunity the boys will be happy for him and we will have his back come Saturday."

So why the combination of dufty and feild the most potent one-two punch in the history of the NYC and Dragons WASNT used before now????? SACK MCIDIOT

The forgotten man in this is Leilua. His abiliry ti create the offload in NYC went a long way to both Field and Dufty scoring try's.

This will be fascinating watching to see if this trio can replicate their NYC combinations.

'He's probably quicker over 100m': Dufty excited to reunite with Field

St George Illawarra speedster Matt Dufty has revealed that rookie five-eighth Jai Field would probably beat him in a 100 sprint.

Field's call-up to replace injured playmaker Corey Norman has added even more speed to a Dragons side that has scored two of the tries of the season so far in the past two matches through Dufty and the electric fullback is excited to be re-united with his former under 20s teammate.

Dragons produce try of the year nomination

"I have played probably over 100 games with him so I know what he can do and everyone in the club knows what he can do, and how exciting he is," Dufty said. "He is just ready to go out there and show everyone else."

While fans marvelled over Dufty's 60-metre solo try against the Sydney Roosters on Anzac Day at the SCG, Field first came to the attention of most NRL supporters with a length-of-the-field effort against Manly at the 2017 Auckland Nines.

"I've got him over 40 but he's probably quicker over 100 metres," Dufty said.

The pair came through St George Illawarra's junior ranks together and terrorised opposition teams in the 2016 National Youth Competition, combining for a total of 38 tries between them.

Jai Field - Try of the #NRLAKL9s so far!? #NRL

Posted by NRL - National Rugby League on Friday, 3 February 2017
Dufty scored 23 tries in 22 matches, while Field crossed for 15 tries and they each made 22 line breaks. In addition, Dufty produced 22 try assists and Field made 19, while the Shellharbour junior also kicked 76 goals.

"I don't know if there was a competition, there probably was because we compete about everything but he is definitely someone I am excited to play with again," Dufty said.

"He's excited, he played a few games a couple of years ago and I think he has matured since then. He is not just all about those fancy plays, he is about the one-per-centers now and he does what he needs to do to win footy games."

Field played three NRL matches in 2017 and two last year but has had to bide his time for a chance in the starting team.

At the start of last season, he and Dufty were vying for the St George Illawarra fullback role but a series of injuries related to Field's weight increase from 72kg to 85kg proved a setback.

The signing of Norman has required Field to maintain his patience but the loss of the star playmaker with a fractured cheekbone has given the youngster the chance to play alongside Ben Hunt in the halves.

"Fieldsy is one of those players you want in the team because he can break games open wherever he is playing," Dufty said.

"I think with Hunty coming to the club and now Normy this year it has been a bit hard but he has been a bit patient, he has trained hard and he has worked hard and now he has got his opportunity."

Stat Attack: Magic Round
Author

The numbers are in the Dragons' corner for their clash with the New Zealand Warriors in the first-ever Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

The St George Illawarra Dragons currently boast four wins and four losses for the season placing them at eighth place. While the Warriors have won just two games this season and are currently riding a four game losing streak.

True to the nature of the Warriors outfit, their attack isn’t far off the pace and is equal with the Dragons as seventh-best in the competition having both scored exactly 148 points this season.

The scales tip in the Dragons favour when it comes to defence, with the Warriors conceding the second-most competition-wide, leaking 190 points and conceding on average 24 points per match.

The Dragons lead the competition in tackle breaks with 233, spurred on by Jordan Pereira who has the second-most of any player with 45 – something that could cause headaches for the Warriors' defence.

The Dragons also hold a healthy record over the Warriors winning 21 of 28 meetings including a dominant 11-game winning streak stretching from 2008 to 2015.

However, the Warriors have won the past two encounters and will be determined to notch up another on Saturday to get their season back on track.

Danger man

Leading the way for the Warriors in 2019 has been their captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. The 2018 Dally M Player of the Year has been a key cog for the Warriors side posting some big numbers in attack.

RTS is equal-first in the NRL for line breaks (eight) this season. He’s notched up four tries, three try assists, 43 tackle breaks, and averaging over 180 running metres per game.

In his last match against the Dragons, RTS had a field day where he ran for a massive 239 metres featuring two line breaks and busting eight tackles.

Matchups

Jordan Pereira v Ken Maumalo

Plenty of points reside in the flanks of both sides but the try scoring abilities of Pereira and Maumalo will be on display.

Pereira has been a revelation for the Dragons despite having just 17 NRL appearances under his belt. Pereira is second in the NRL for tackle breaks and is averaging 139 running metres per game. The New Zealand born winger has crossed for five tries.

His opposite number Ken Maumalo, is one of the best in the NRL at finding the try-line. With six tries already this season, Maumalo is a lethal weapon on the end of the Warriors backline standing at an imposing 191 centimetres tall.

While Pereira has the edge over Maumalo in tackle busts and line breaks, the towering Warrior wins the contest for running metres (170 averaged per game) and notching the fifth-most metres in the league.

Paul Vaughan v Leeson Ah Mau

Former Dragon Leeson Ah Mau will front up against his former teammate Paul Vaughan in what will be an entertaining battle.

Ah Mau played seven seasons with the Dragons but joined the Warriors for the 2019 season. Since making his way onto the starting side, Ah Mau has been a workhorse for the Warriors, averaging 10 hit-ups and almost 100 running metres per game.

Known for his hard running style, Ah Mau has already busted nine tackles this year and posted a solid 240 post-contact metres.

Vaughan has been enjoying a stand-out year averaging 156 running metres and busting 10 tackles. Vaughan also has the edge in post-contact metres with a total of 379.

Kodi Nikorima has been the reason the Dragons have one the past three against the Broncos. He scored some tries but a liability with limited organising skills and average kicking skills, Green and RTS need to be watched and we need to stop all the play going left particularly getting Sims the ball more often
