Pereira disappointed over sin-binning

St George Illawarra winger Jordan Pereira left the field at Bankwest Stadium earlier than expected red-faced and hot under the collar.

Pereira was frustrated after copping the first sin-binning of his career in the 32-18 loss to the Eels – marched in the 74th minute of Sunday's clash after he was ruled to have pushed Mitchell Moses in the back in a chase for the ball.

The 26-year-old speedster was angry at himself for leaving his teammates one player short for the closing stages of the match but said he thought he had not done anything to warrant being banished.

"I've never been sent off before," Pereira said.

"I'm really disappointed in myself – I feel like I let the team down.

"I didn't believe there was any foul play from point of view – I was just competing for the ball.

"I competed in a previous play with Blake Ferguson but I came off second best with him getting a try so I wanted to redeem myself and compete as much as I could to get the ball.

"I thought it was a fair contest but it's a tough one when someone falls over, it always looks bad but my eyes were all for the ball."

Match Highlights: Eels v Dragons

Sunday's performance means the Dragons have suffered back-to-back losses after they suffered their first defeat in five games the previous week against the Roosters at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In more bad news for the Dragons, Corey Norman will undergo surgery on Tuesday for a fractured cheekbone, while fellow stars Gareth Widdop (shoulder), Korbin Sims (broken arm) and Jack de Belin, who has been stood down by the NRL, are also unavailable.

Second-rower Tyson Frizell's eye injury is not serious and the club believes he will be fit for Saturday's Magic Round stoush with the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium.

Pereira said the absence of several stars presented an opportunity for some of the team's inexperienced players to step up to the challenge.

"Everyone was really upset in the shed after the game," Pereira said.

"But that's the good thing about rugby league we have an opportunity next week to redeem ourselves.

"Losing Normie is a big one but we have good depth within the squad and there are boys there ready to go.

"We as a unit need to step up and support each other.

"I feel we owe it to the boys who are out to produce a solid performance on Saturday against the Warriors to get us back on track."

Warriors v Dragons: Nikorima straight in; Field steps up

Everything was going beautifully for the Dragons in the first half hour of last week's clash with the Eels, but then everything went horribly wrong and a 14-0 lead quickly disappeared.

The 32-18 loss left them with a 4-4 record and teetering on the edge of the top eight.

Worse still are the mounting injuries for coach Paul McGregor, with Corey Norman (broken cheekbone) the latest high profile casualty. Tyson Frizell is also under an injury cloud.

The Warriors crashed to their sixth loss from eight games last week against Newcastle and are fighting an uphill battle to emulate last year's top eight finish.

Key match-up
Ben Hunt has heard all the criticism in the past about his tendency to disappear in crunch time. With Norman sidelined, Hunt has a great opportunity to show he can be the 80-minute field general the Dragons need him to be. If he is going to earn an Origin recall Hunt needs to out-shine Warriors veteran Blake Green.

For the Warriors to win
After another lacklustre performance in last week's home loss to the Knights, it's make or break time for the Warriors. They've had some good wins at Brisbane in the past and might actually to prefer to play away from Mt Smart Stadium for this game. Stephen Kearney has to get his team re-committed to defence and staying strong for 80 minutes.

For the Dragons to win
They didn't seem to drop in confidence after the Anzac Day loss to the Roosters but it'll be interesting to see if the manner in which they were overrun by the Eels leaves any mental scars. McGregor needs to quickly settle on a replacement for Norman, but the Dragons' hopes rest largely on Hunt's shoulders on Saturday.

Brett Kimmorley says
With Corey Norman out, the Dragons will lose a lot in attack. Their forwards are good but Matt Dufty needs to remain strong in attack like he has been over the last couple of weeks. As for the Warriors, a likely new No.7 (Kodi Nikorima) might give them someone who can manage a game plan for them. I want to see Isaac Luke, Tohu Harris and the leaders in the forwards take control of the game. Dragons by 2

Stat Attack
The Warriors completed 75% against the Knights, which isn't all that bad except Newcastle completed 91% (29/32). They missed 32 tackles and their eight errors doubled that of the visitors. Blake Lawrie worked hard in the loss to the Eels, making 134m from 17 runs. He also had 15 hit-ups and 39 tackles in just 57 minutes of game time.

And another thing ...
Revenge should be high on the agenda for the Dragons after failing to beat the Warriors in two meetings last season. The Warriors ended the Dragons' six-game winning run to start the season with a 20-12 victory at Mt Smart Stadium in round seven before completing a 2-0 sweep with an 18-12 triumph at WIN Stadium in round 18. Neither team is travelling as well as they were this time last year.

Quite honestly I am getting to a point where I am in disinterested in this game. Aside from the two points that are needed, there's a host of players on the sideline, it will be played miles from either team's homeland and really there's not much to be gained from beating the Warriors. Also, with our 40 minute performances it is likely to be as frustrating as anything to watch.

Sure things might amp up for me by Saturday but really McGregor has put the curse of death on our club and no one seems phased.

We are stuck with Mary regardless of results so may as well get behind the players and hope they do The Red V proud in spite of Mary.

I still think he’ll retain his spot even when Korbin is back. Not that I agree

Our supercoach has backed himself into a corner.
Lets say, for example, wecwere 7w 1l, would he drop Lats? Probably not. Now at 4w 4l he thinks (sorry I know thats impossible) he has to rely on "experienced" players in the slim hope they come good and we jag a few wins. The risk for reward is too much for him to comprehend. So a plodder is preferred simply because a rookie MAY make a few mistakes and that would maje him look even worse.

Shellharbour's Jai Field set to slide into St George Illawarra starting lineup
Dragons Den
r0_135_3365_2027_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Call-up: Jai Field. Picture: NRL Imagery/Gregg Porteous.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has put his faith in Jai Field to fill the void left by injured five-eighth Corey Norman.

With Norman set for a long stint on the sidelines after undergoing surgery for a fractured cheekbone on Tuesday, Field has the chance to lock down the Dragons No.6 jersey for weeks to come.

St George Illawarra will be hoping Field fires in Saturday night's match against the Warriors, with the Dragons looking to rebound after dropping their last two matches.

A Shellharbour product, Field has played five games in the top-flight since making his debut in 2017.

The 21-year-old has bided his time in the Dragons NSW Cup side, playing in the halves throughout the first eight weeks of the season.

In positive news for the Dragons, Field's inclusion is the only change to the 17, with Tyson Frizell named in the starting side, having overcome a poke to the eye suffered in Sunday afternoon's loss to the Eels.

St George Illawarra face a tough challenge on Saturday, with the Warriors naming former Broncos five-eighth Kodi Nikorima to make his debut for his new club at Suncorp Stadium.

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has made one other notable change, with hooker Isaac Luke moved to the reserves. Nathaniel Roache has been named in the starting role, with Karl Lawton coming on to the bench. The Warriors will also be without suspended forward Adam Blair.
