Rugby Australia to target top NRL talent

Suaalii is worth about 500k ,Union paid 1.7 million... waste of money.
Nobody said that about:
Rogers
Sailor
Teqiri
Thorn
SBW

Nobody's saying we are going to start paying 3 x what players are worth .
A concession for clubs or a reward for taking a risk on unproven players is just incentivising a more pragmatic approach to finding talent.

I think a lot of people said that about all of those players before and after they went across. Thorne probably being the most successful, then Tuqiri. The other three were considered expensive failures, and yet RA wants to go back to that 'well'?

There is always the possibility of noses getting out of joint in the NRL senior playing ranks if converts get paid a truckload to come across. It also sets an unhealthy expectation on the young guys to perform when they don't have the skills or experience to play 'to their worth'.

You could make the case that those players you named were the start of Unions downward spiral. Paying those NRL players a heap of money to switch maybe sent a clear signal to young players that a better and more lucrative pathway is through rugby league. Just spit-balling, but we should be thinking long term on this.

I'm torn on this issue. While I think rugby union is deserving of this reality check I also think the codes can coexist. We currently don't need to pick over the carcass as they're killing themselves off pretty effectively. Killing them completely cuts a rectangle field code out to the benefit of AFL, for stadium funding as well as junior sports grants etc.

Wallabies players are shit and nobody watches them, except for when they sign for an NRL team and they are suddenly worth a million and millions of people want to watch.
Who said Millions?

They'll be a bargain given it doesn't effect the cap.

The downward spiral of Union was the increased quality of the NRL in comparison, the signing of those players actually halted their demise and that’s why they went balls deep trying to replicate it.

Like they've said, it will be limited and delicate. Likely limited to 1 or 2 players for a maximum of 1 million.
Basically, the players we've only just missed out on we won't miss anymore. Jona Lomu toured the Gold Coast in a helicopter with the Titans ceo... if this were in place back then Lomu may have been on the wing for the Titans...

Nah ru dieing offers league many benefits and has no downsides

a couple of wallabies come over really will be a kick in the guts for a code at its knees

good old Hamish was happy to talk about how they were going to raid the nrl of talent if their private equity deal had come through

Now they are begging the nrl not to poach their players

without a succeful lions tour and World Cup they can’t pay back the 100 million loan they will have

I'm the Union fan apparently yet this f**kwit and his idiot friend think that Union players will generate huge ratings for League with there "star power"

Rampant drug taking is the only logical explanation

Oh and union players will bring increased crowds to offset their million dollar salary.

Love the idea. Just hope clubs don’t just use it on Oceanic players. Argentina, France, South Africa, England and the rest of the UK. Could be massive for the game globally if used carefully.
I'd prefer it if NRL clubs picked the guts out of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and New Zealand to make the Pacific Cup more prestigious. There's an opportunity for RL to take over the Pacific.

Throw in England too so we never again have to see the son of a famous English RL player be the main playmaker and star of the English RU team.

Oh and while we are at it. If that famous English RL player can stop coaching Ireland RU and use his coaching talent to improve English RL that would be great too

In recent years he has played rugby, AFL and rugby league, all at the highest levels of school sport and elite junior academies in these respective sports, all at the same time. There is no doubt he has a future in any one of these sports. We actually went and met with the Sydney Swans development staff to discuss his future. We both agreed he could make it in either code, but the time had come for him to specialise in one game.

There has been ongoing speculation from NRL sources that Suaalii’s rugby deal is in jeopardy, with whispers around that those putting up the money are getting cold feet.

How much money do people think the NRL have??

That we can just piss it into the wind on frivolous shit? Just so you can win a internet fake tough guy contest?

If we spend one cent on enriching some European Rugby player, it would be to much.

Again you too much from a bored journo in the off season story.

There are very few RU players that clubs would be buy, Teams still want to win

People saying that a smaller number of signings won't have an effect need to look a little closer.

A lot depends on what team you support.
No secret who my team is so.....

Union
Wendel Sailor
Lote Tiquiri
Brad Thorn (to a lesser extent because he wanted to leave the first time he had little choice the second time)

afl
Israel Folau
Karmichael Hunt

These are star players and very difficult to replace especially in the short term. I sure as shit noticed them missing. Supporters of other clubs not so much .

The afl signed Hunt and Folau to stop them playing league. Cost them a bit of money but imo that was the main reason for their signings.

The NRL is Mike Tyson. The aru is Trevor Berbick. What happened there?

Whose this guy

is he any good
He is the twin brother of Leo Thompson, the guy who was an amateur rugby midfield back, converted 2 and a bit years ago, plays for Newcastle and recently starred in the Kiwis smashing of the Roos.

Plays as a hooker in rugby for the Chiefs (franchise) and Magpies (NPC). Good player but will be behind the starting AB hooker in the Chiefs next year.

Those guys didn't sign all at once though, in some cases it was a Decade apart. Folau, who was poached, was a dud signing for the Broncos anyway.

Regardless isn't that a great example of how it didn't work, the NRL didn't even skip a beat when those players departed, and we have a production line of stars coming through every year. And all Union achieved was the decimation of its grassroots and supporter base.

We should not be wasting our cash on no talent Union players.

As long as there is GPS schools in Australia, Union will always exist, anyway.
