It does financially. Also, lots of young people would like the travel benefits afforded by union. I agree the game is really stupid and in massively poor health domestically but their offers would have some benefits over what League can offer

If they’re playing internationally they can play in front of big crowds in Australia, NZ, Japan, Argentina, South Africa, Europe hell even places like the US on occasion. I don’t think the players mind having a slightly lower profile in Australia.

The problem is that’s only if you’re making the wallabies or all blacks.

Long term it’s not really a good option for rugby anyway. The talent pool of talent for rugby is continuing to shrink and as the NRL continues to grow its getting more and more expensive to attract players across (and that only further hurts their talent pool).

Representing your country is still a big thing, and like it or not they do that a hell of a lot better than us on every level.
Besides we should all be happy, if ARU want to pss what little money they have away on replaceable NRL talent then that's a good thing! Better that than they actually invest it in growing their game and actually doing something good long term!

I think the all-expenses-paid travel is attractive to the younger player on top of possibly getting more money than RL. They’d get bored and probably overawed by the technicalities of the game, however. By contrast, the older player would hate the travel as it’s time away from family but appreciate how easy the bludger-of-a-game is on their bodies.

The only RU players I can think of, besides ex-nrl players, are John Eales, George Grogan, the fat prop Dunning?, Nick farr-jones and Michael someone who played in the halves with him.

thats the point, ones big domestically, ones big internationally. Some players like the idea of playing an international sport regularly. Its the only drawcard RU has really.

Union can’t offer higher money now anyway except for a few wingers since league won’t pay 1 million pa for a winger

if anything nrl salaries will keep rising towards 2 million pa for the top players

It’ll become less and less of a threat as the salary cap goes higher but living in a country like France, Italy or Japan and getting paid handsomely to do it would be attractive.

Exactly. If you really wanted to live in a foreign country and be paid well then rugby is your best shot.
