I think people are misunderstanding the threat Barrett poses. Obviously Canterbury were always going to try and sign the best players possible, but Barrett gives them an inside man. He can build a rapport with players, he might even have a casual word about their future plans. Normally when you’re recruiting you don’t have this type of advantage. It’s as close to if you were competing against yourself for a player’s signature.

Yes, Barrett has been a part of our success. But he’d been here long enough for the players & other coaching staff to parlay what he’d brought to the table. Cleary has coached for 13 years, he should have the ability to learn from what Barrett has done.

He's either got the rapport or he doesn't. Cutting him mid season wouldn't of changed the relationship with him & the players. If anything it may have strengthened his position if the players thought he was unfairly shown the door.

I agree, however, it also shows what type of person Barrett appears. I thought Liam would follow him, and he hasn't.

Yes it could. It gives him more time to build rapport, more time to talk to players about their future.

There’s nothing unfair about showing him the door mid season, it’s standard non compete practice. I’m sure if the players were explained that they’d understand.

You can’t serve two masters.

The Storm won't be the same in a couple of years. Bellamy will retire, Cam Smith will retire and their CEO will be in charge of the Broncos next year. Sounds like a great move today but I can't see them maintaining the same culture after the three mentioned have moved on.
If Smith goes around again next year ( not that I think he will) it will be really detrimental for the club as a whole and probably speed up their demise.
Already they are pushing things a bit with Smiths delayed decision, if they loose players or can’t get a few key signings because of keeping his cap space free it will really stir some unrest.
They willA also be open to all the crap other clubs have to deal with when they get a new coach, and will have an excuse to underperform.

Not sure what you expect Barrett / Bulldogs to do. They need to secure players & if the players are available they have every right to go after them.

As for punting Barrett, cutting the nose off to spite the face... We are a red hot chance of securing a premiership & he's a major reason for it, why jeopardise that?

I totally agree. From what I understand Barrett was asked to be open and frank with the club, I imagine that has happened.

Both are working well within their allocated boundaries

This is Barrett’s last chance as a FG coach, If he fails here it’s over. It would only be human for him to do everything in his power to bring players to Canterbury.

It was always going to be a little awkward when Barrett signed elsewhere, but the club went into it willingly, I’m sure our best interest have been prioritised.
We have been through it with Brennan, a lot of players went with him and at the time I was very annoyed but it all worked out for the best.

We may loose a few but I am hopeful we are smart enough to keep the ones we need most.

Masked Panther

Rumours are doing the rounds that Melbourne has its eye on Panthers centre Brent Naden, and could put an offer to the strike centre as early as November. The 24-year-old, who is having a sensational season for Penrith, is contracted at the foot of the Mountains until the end of next year but is apparently likely to be targeted by Craig Bellamy. This will be a common story in the next few months – Penrith’s exciting crop of talent is garnering plenty of interest across the NRL.

I wonder how much impact Naden turning up unfit at the start of the season has had on his contract negotiations.

Yeah i wasn't happy about Peachey, but not many others left with brennan, and really did us a favour, not latu, or bryce
I liked latu, but, fish etc would never had shone thru, if we held those guys

Sailor is way to small to play lock, he is Dufty sized. He is only 80kg.
According to more than a few dragons fans he gets a lot of attention because of his name, he has some skill and speed but is probably a bit overhyped.
Papenhuyzen played lock for the Storm off the bench last year and played ridiculously well there. I know online it says he's the same weight but that stuff goes years without being updated. He looks a bit bigger than Paps.
