This quote, this was Gus' vision when he came here. Create a club kids want to stay at. Staines has almost certainly turned down bigger money and a better chance to start to stay here.

“There's such a special bond that all the players and staff have here. It feels like a big family.

"Wherever I can fit into this team moving forward, I'll play, because I just want to be a part of it."

Well done to the club, its been a long road from the elliot days but its starting to feel like we made it finally.

and that's how you become successful long term.

But it does. Smith, Munster. Pearce, Ponga. Moses, Gutherson. Reynolds, Walker. Every good team has at least two superstars in their spine. Melbourne have dominated for years by rotating out journeymen around a spine they heavily invest in. The "big three". In fact you could argue that Reynolds, Walker, Cook and Mitchell makes four superstars at South's. What you can't do is overpay for forwards unless they are so good they can win you a competition.
Api is in the top 3 hookers in the game. Critter, Kikau, Martin all need upgrading. You have to make cuts somewhere

I agree that he is. Other teams have shown, Souths and East’s being two examples, that you can keep three top class players in the spine if you manage the salary cap judiciously. The fact Cleary is on a good package doesn’t stop us keeping Luai.

This is why development is so crucial. We now need to focus on getting a good supply of NRL quality forwards coming through, so the spine stays in place and we rotate our forwards. If a forward becomes to expensive, we let them go. The Storm are masters at this. They took Norrie from us FFS! Bennett let Civonoceva go for that exact reason. We can’t pay overs for forwards or wingers.

Its really a big win for the club giving a young guy who is outside the 17 permission to talk to other clubs he comes back and re-signs. The SMH story on Charlie said something like "The club is now turning its attention to the in-demand Matt Burton" so lets up he is announced soon also.

I am stoked that Staines is signed up but Burton is the one I really want to keep. I still think he will be a very special player.

I agree Burto is an amzing talent though I give Staines a good chance of turning into a genuine superstar fullback. I really see a skinny tedesco when I look at him, bit more inclined towards speed over power than Teddy is but very well rounded like Tedesco is and a gifted athlete. Put 10kgs on Staines from the waist down and a bit more on the upper body and he is a teddy clone in terms of build and I think he will prove to be just as skilled.

Is that a guess? Or have you heard something?
Their managers might have more to say about it.

An opinion. Players who play for the Storm, etc. stays unders for continue success, and that may happen here. Also their managers can say what they like, at the end of the day, where a particular player decides to sign for is up to them.

The fact Staines re-signed gives credence to this thinking. Other clubs were definitely keen and so was his manager for the bigger $$$ yet he didn't go.

Exactly. Here's an interesting article, and Matt Burton is mentioned.

Incoming Bulldogs coach eyeing off Cronulla trio

Look out, Cronulla. Incoming Canterbury coach Trent Barrett could be set to raid your talent.

After identifying the need for a new half, middle forward and an outside back, Barrett and the Bulldogs are likely to have Matt Moylan, Aaron Woods and Josh Dugan in their sights.

With the trio not only meeting the struggling club’s needs, they will also collectively become free agents as of November 1st.

With the ball still in their court, Cronulla will have to assess their salary cap position before recommitting to the star triad.

As many clubs across the league have yet to recommit to a plethora of their players, the Bulldogs are currently eyeing the market before pouncing on any prospective prey.

A report from Matt Logue of The Australian has suggested that Canterbury are also keen to secure the services of Penrith Panther Matt Burton.

However, this signing seems unlikely, as Burton is not only on contract until the end of next season, but the Dogs will need to wait until November before approaching the playmaker, as per the league’s free agency laws.

Should Burton remain with the minor premiers, Canterbury may be be forced to explore secondary options such as Drew Hutchison, Jaeman Salmon and Tyrone Roberts.

Having already parted ways with Kieran Foran and club stalwart Aiden Tolman, the Bulldogs are desperate to add some bite back to their roster.

Despite securing the services of Nick Cotric and Corey Waddell, the search continues for a front row partner for Englishman Luke Thompson. The names of Brisbane’s Matt Lodge and Jack Bird have been bandied.

In what is certain to be the busiest off-season at Belmore in recent memory, expect Barrett to also enquire about the multitude of veterans such as Dale Copley, Gerard Beale and Jordan Kahu who are all currently out of contract.

Not sure what the bulldogs major sponsor and ruler said when he visited Staines and burtons home but it sure worked well lol lol

His faction on the board stepped down today I think there is a fair chance he will pull out of that deal with the Dogs now.
