We had Ivan Cleary for three years.

He brought us to within a bee's dick of a premiership in 2014

He literallly has the same finals winning percentage with us as Griffin and Ciraldo do. He still couldn’t get us over a weak Bulldogs side so we could get smashed by Souths in the final.

Interested to hear.....what would be even one advantage of having Ivan coaching Nathan insofar as the side is concerned ?.....how is he going to get more out of him than any other successful coach could? Only positive would seem is that Ivan is happy...football players can be a sensitive bunch so this could get seriously uncomfortable sooner or ( not much ) later....but..the warm n fuzzy will last awhile so enjoy it while it does.

No warm fuzzies here. We got rid of Hook, kept our halfback out of you filthy hands, and retained most of the players we wanted to and kept Ciraldo. If Cleary snr comes that will just be a bonus.

I like how you conveniently left out the fact that in 2014 we beat the Minor Premiers to get to the Bulldogs game. Plus the Bulldogs couldn't have been that weak, they smashed Melbourne 28-4 in the first final and beat Manly (who came equal 1st) to get to the Preliminary final, they got smashed in the GF because they probably ran out of gas much like the Cowboys of 2017

Win percentage is a pointless stat as well, our team is much different then it was 4 years ago, I don't think we even have 5 players left from our 2014 starting 17

Ivan took us to week 3 of finals with a busted side that had gone through Wallace, John, Cartwright and Peachey partnering Jamie Soward. Before having to settle on Will f**king Smith as his partner.

Im not convinced Cleary can lead us to a premiership. But he has gotten a lot f**king closer then Hook ever did or Ciro did on his first attempt.

With sides that were still developing aswell. This will easily be his best developed roster in his first grade career. If he cant get us top 4 in 2019 were in for a long 5 years though.

Are we trying to be the best or just go better than an unpopular coach would take us?

The only bonus to getting Ivan is it stopped us from going into a bidding war for Nathan.

It's the same Ivan that had many flaws (another case of short memories). Not only was he signed without an interview process but he gets 5 years. As many have said he has always had a terrible roster.. 5 years given he has a losing record is shocking

No reason he couldn't of put Moylan in the 6. DWZ fullback.

He chose Will Smith. Not too mention he had told Moylan to look around before injuries got him in. Hell even when he was leaving Ivan wanted him only as a fullback.

Waqa Blake would of been better earlier if he was centre instead of Lewis Brown..

Let's not pretend Ivan is a god. He got a rails run because he was good in the media- that will change now. Oh and managed to have a very promising halfback share a surname

Who is?

He's just a hell of a lot better than Hook. I know that's an extremrly low bar to set. But we've upgraded our coach and there's still a bunch of people bitching.

He wouldn't be my first choice coach. But it's an upgrade and we have a good roster.

Dallin had only not long made his NRL debut in 3014cand if he were fullback we might not have beaten Roosters in week 1 of finals as he wouldn't be in position to set up Whare for the try that levelled it.

You're bagging Cleary for not moving Moylan from fullback while also saying he didnt rate him as a fullback. We never got to see what Ivan would have done with Moylan after DWZ had played a few games at fullback in 2015. Because both were injured by the end of 2015.

Ivan tended to be slow to move guys. But if injury gave them a chance he was happy to stick eith the guy in better form. Moylan was a lazy trainer and didnt eork hard off the field. Most coaches would have been hesitant to pick him.

We don't have Hook and apart from a couple of contracts to get sorted we have retained all our main roster and potential future first graders.

I think its hilarious that 3 months ago Tigers were adamant that Nathan was signing with them and a deal was already done but now that its turned and Ivan is apparently a snake for doing the same thing that they were crowing about with Nathan..

Suck shit...

The only issue with Ivan is giving him 5 years. But if hes not performing he will just get sacked anyway

Unlike a player we can sack him, pay him out and only lose out financially. Which we can afford to do. Its not ideal. But it also reduces the worry of a 5 year deal.

I still think by year 4 he will be replacing Gus.

Replacing Griffin with Cleary is like replacing a Civic with an Audi R8.

Also, Cleary already knows most of the team and he's already worked with Maloney. Less adjustment time needed.

Imagine thinking this is anything but a massive upgrade.

I think there’s a case to be made that Nathan won’t improve all that much under his dad, for the simple reason Nathan needs a good tactical coach.

In your opinion he is. It shouldn't be a hook or Ivan thing there is many good coaches out there.

Let's go purely on winnage % the following current coaches have better records than Ivan.

Bellamy 68%
Robinson 63.3%
Seibold 63%
Bennett 62%
Des 58.2%
Paul Green 56.4%
Maguire 55.6%
Flanagan 55.1%
McGregor 50.4%
Ricky 48.4%

So on win % he is 11/16.

3 on that list were available. All had won comps. Hell even Toovey made a GF and better %

Then of course hook was fired with a 55.5%

So Ivan was better to keep Nathan but the best coach hardly... Let's give him a 5 year deal to make it worse

How many of those have had to rebuild 3 clubs? Cleary teams tend to punch above their weight.

Cleary was the first and only ever coach to have the Warriors playing consistent footy.

He then came here and spent 3 years rebuilding our club before having a decent roster by 2014.

He then went to Tigers where he had to rebuild them. While rebuilding those sides all punched above their weight.

He has never gone to a club with an established roster and the resources we had. But yeah compare the win percentage of a coach who has rebuilt 3 clubs to guys at powerhouse clubs with more resources then Ivan has ever had.

Hes not better then all of that list. But hes not worse then them all either and hes certainly better then Hook who has his team achieving the bare minimum you would expect them to.

of course not but like Griffin he isn't near the top either. He is better than Mary and Ricky for starters but there were 3 proven coaches available and we did not so much as even interview them.

Given our squad we’ll know very soon how good a coach Cleary is.

No room for growing pains anymore.
