In a 7 Million dollar cap, the average of each 25 in your top squad will earn 280k, or 4%
baring in mind the back end of your squad is filled with guys who are on U20's graduates and journeyman who would be lucky to get $150k or 2.1% (for us guys like Sami Sailuma, Shannon Boyd, Jarrad Kennedy and Langi Setu would be here)

450k for a starting winger is 6.5%, i don't think that's an erroneous figure for a clear upgrade. You guys have the benefit of having an absolute log jam of guns in the backline, so you dont need to pay that kind of money. We've got Edrick Lee and Reece Robinson, and when Eddie's hurt we're calling in Billy Tupou and Sami Sailuma, we need to pay that money.

you may have even more when campese is moved on.He is average and costing plenty. My guess is you are offering Mansour more than us but i doubt the 470 is right

We've got Dugan's money (650k from memory), Fergo's money (around 400k), Campese's money (from everything ive heard, he's going to Warrington at the end of the year, 500k), TLL's money (SOO forward when he signed this deal, would be north of 400k), White's money (around 350k).
Robinson is all but gone from what ive heard and no one is going to stand in Shillington's way if he finds another club. McCrone is still unsigned too...

and Milford knocked our millions back. All we've done with that money is re-sign a handful of guys like Fensom, Boyd, Croker, Edrick Lee and Wighton. We've got 2 mil easy... and absolutely no one internally to spend it on until Cornish's next deal.

The broom is coming big time and i for one couldnt be happier about it. If the Raiders snare Tedesco, Mansour, Proctor and Ennis, to pair with Wighton, Croker, Fensom, Vaughan, Cornish and Papalii we'll actually might be an NRL footy side next year.

Mansour is a gun, i really hope we get him. Wouldnt mind taking on Moylan either if Tedesco falls through!

No why I would pay more then $250k for a specialist winger. He will be a loss no doubt but DWZ or Cartwright going due to no cap is far worse of a loss.

Why are we talking about Sticky's coaching career in the Signings thread?

If only people wanted to live in Canberra and Play for Ricky. You will be lucky to get one of that list.

Rumour has it that we have signed South Sydney's head of recruitment Mark Hughes. Hughes has the reputation as being the best talent scout in the business.

Good work Gus.

That's been confirmed in a number of media outlets Luke. Possibly one of our best signings outside of the playing roster if he lives up to his reputation.

I read that as a Canberra signing at first. Was wondering why Gus has anything to do with it. Hits keep on coming for Penrith. Great job. I expect he'll be put to work hunting out young talent. Not many big signings for us on the horizon I would imagine.

Back to Mansour quickly, just because you have the money doesn't make it a great idea to spend it on a winger unless they are the best in the game or can play some centres/fullback. He'll go well for you and maybe that's the kind of money Ricky needs to throw at players but not at all ideal.

Hearing the offer to Mansour is in the region of $450k per year.

Not sure if that is including incentives like Origin etc. But damn that'd be hard to turn down.

Well that's crazy.

I was keen to match a sensible offer , but nothing sensible about that.

Easily 100k+ over his worth.

Whilst I think this reported offer is way overs , 250k for an above average 1st grade winger is unders. Especially under the new cap.

Hell it's below the average salary of the top 25.

I'd put the worth of an above average 1st grade winger somewhere in the 300-350k range.

250k for a winger that plays pretty much as a forward for you guys and leads the hit ups nearly every game LOL.

Stop living in the stone age, welcome to modern day football where good wings like him do a lot more then score tries.

Agreed.

For you guys it is acceptable balance as it is a position of need along with noone of clear quality there.

Plus no guarantee Reece Robinson stays either.

For us, our need to pay that is not as high as we have Nabuli, K.Naiqama, DWZ, G.Jennings, R.Jennings, W.Blake waiting in the wings for opportunities.

It's the business of football. Supply and Demand.

I'd be interested to see if Canberra could attract all of those guys...would be interesting to see.

Would be a decent backline...but who would be your five-eight?

1. James Tedesco
2. Josh Mansour
3. Jarrod Croker
4. Jack Whighton
5. Edrick Lee
6. ??
7. Mitch Cornish

Well it is perception of value plus what you have already.

He is worth between 250-350k for Penrith because we have players behind him capable of being significant contributors to the team who may not be as big metre eaters but also safer in the area's where Josh isn't.

But to someone like the Raiders or Cronulla for instance who have a void at the position he is worth significantly more.

If he stays at Penrith he will be on between $300k - $325k I believe with incentives included. But never know.

Of course but most teams have 20 or so above minimum. Squad members 21-25 is usually journey men or kids. To me if you pay above even average they need to be versatile enough to move if there's an injury to another regular.

If we are paying 300k for a winger he should be able to be moved to centre or fullback if injuries hit

Big Mick, apparently Canberra have been using Jack Ahern at 5/8 for their feeder club, Souths Logan, in the QLD Cup. I think he was their regular fullback in the 20s in previous seasons, but they're hoping to develop him into their 1st Grade 5/8 over the long run.

If I remember correctly, he's very similar to Matty Moylan in that he's got that versatility about him with good ball skills and perhaps they're hoping his halfback/fullback combo from 20s with Mitch Cornish will translate as half and 5/8.

I read it on the Canberra forum of LU somewhere.

Hmmm I rated Jack Ahern as a FB but haven't seen him play 5/8. Hope they know what they are doing there.

Ahearn would be my first guess, he played very much like an inline 5/8th for us in the 20's and thats where he looked his best.
But wouldnt be surprised if Wighton ends up back there. Stuart is very fond of him as a play maker

Fall back option is *gulp

McCrone... *sigh*

AND FINALLY ? GUS GETS HIS MAN
The Panthers have scored a coup by signing highly respected former Souths recruitment manager Mark Hughes.
The former Bulldogs star has a good track record in identifying junior talent and was on Gus Gould?s radar for some time.

From - http://rugbyleagueweek.com.au/moles-transfer-monday/

Mick do you know which Mark Hughes? Did he play for Newcastle or is he the guy from the Bulldogs in the Eighties?
