He wasn't that f**king big. There are plenty of halves bigger than him in today's NRL, including Campese and Sutton. And it is the only place to effectively utilise a player with a good kicking game. Cronin's kicking game would be wasted at centre.

I can't see how he would be wasted at edge forward - they make more runs and tackles than halves or centres. In fact plenty of big backs move to the second row (if they can't play fullback) to get more involved - e.g. Lewis, Bird, SBW, Glenn, Joel Thompson, Smith, Tony Williams, Mannering, Hurrell, Bodene Thompson, McQueen, Scott, Graham.

If anything, Cronin would be wasted at centre. Unless a player is an absolute jet in one-on-one situations (on both sides of the ball) then he is better off playing closer to centrefield, if he's one of your best players.

Cronin was bigger than Campese or Sutton. Anyway, I watched Cronin for his entire career. How about you?

Ella was so under -rated in that team and his versatility meant he was on the bench for Australia a lot.
in my opinion playing ella and Kenny would be a stronger team than one with Simon

Fair enough. You could be right. But I always thought (sacrilege, I know) that Steve Ella was just ever so slightly over-rated.
I think Kenny and Cronin were both better centres than Ella. And Simon's kicking game gives him an edge at five-eight. I think he would bring another dimension to that incredible back-line.

Cronin played at around 90kgs from my recollection, but looked big because the average size of players then was much smaller. I don't think we had a forward over 95kgs in the 1982 Grand Final.

Sutton is 105kgs, Campese about 100kgs.

Obviously, if Mick did the weights work currently used he would have been bigger, but he didn'.t.

I don't like to insult some of the older players. But I put up with my dad saying how they would belt these new guys and are heaps tougher. I don't believe so. I personaly think guys like Radradra if put his body into 1980's he would be almost impossible to tackle. The problem with the 80's compared to now is now everyone is close to there peak. There all fit have decent diets. And physically as strong as they can be.

In the 80's a guy like Grothe stood out cause potentially he trained a little more and had a better diet than other guys.Im not saying he wasn't tough but a lot of there strength would of had a lot to do with diet and time allocated to strength training whilst trying to fit in the normal day to day job..

For this reason I think its unfair to compare the older players to the ones where they became fulltime athletes. Hayne is the greatest player we have since players have become fulltime,The End. Don't compare him too part timers.Of course if you put Hayne in a time capsule and played in the 80's he would kill them.Question is if he had a fulltime job and less knowledge about diet would he?

I would have Kenny at 5/8 and Crow/Zip in the centres

In todays game it might be different but Sterlo did enough at half back to control the team and do all the kicking, all Kenny had to do was score tries which he did with ease

You dont need two half backs if you got Sterlo

if you applied todays fitness regimes to all the players back then, they all would have been bigger

Okay, so he was big compared to the average player back then. So you don't think (with extra weights, supplements and training) he's be big compared to the players now?
Anyway, I think he was a great centre (the best I've ever seen) and I think he'd be a great centre today. You don't agree?

And that would be the most obvious choice. I just think that Simon's kicking game would add another dimension to an otherwise impeccable backline. And I don't think Kenny's try-scoring would be limited playing outside Mick Cronin.

Sure, but it wouldn't make him taller than 5'10", unless he bought some of those lengthening pills on the internet.

Sterlo would be a hooker in today's game and I reckon he would be even better then what he did at halfback

He was very good defensively and his kicking game and ability to control a game reminds me of how smith plays

Cronin would be an edge forward I reckon he would lack a bit of speed that today's centres have.

Similar to a Stewart on one side.
