Would need to be a must (being on low coin). With a fully healthy squad he is No.19 on the basis that Sefa Paulo is not re-signed. It looks like 2015 is set without taking into equation form at the time:

Mannah, Peats, Jnr, Ma'u, Moeroa, Pauli, Lussick, Mossop, Tanginoa, Matterson (17? middle half?)

Then Edwards, then Gower

Do you honestly think Lussick is a better player than Gower???

Tanginoa and Matterson would be behind him in the pecking order currently - I'm hoping Matterson is groomed to play in the halves, not in the forwards - the role that Sef plays does nothing for our attack (we are far and away worst in the comp the last 8 weeks).
Our attack has been stronger when the other players are fit, having some soft walter in the middle doing a jig hasn't proved especially effective.

They are vying for 2 different positions aren't they? I take your point but we aren't shifting $300K Lussick without taking a hit and Gower is off contract, this logic outways the fact that I too like Gower more.

Kelepi is also signed for next year, can play edge and middle and Matterson I am lazily assuming will fill the Sefa role.

Re: worst in the past 8 weeks is not a good example as we have been without key personnel and prior to that we had probably the best and most appreciated attacking game which Sefa played a big part of. Dunno if Matterson can play that role (i'd assume he can).

Back on 2015 I like the "the idea" of Ma'u, Pauli and Tepai all being ahead of Gower on the edge forwards tables and as I say, with Jnr, Mannah, Lussick, Edwards, Mossop signed and probably ahead of Gower... having Allgood move on is prob the only chance we have of retaining Gower at anything but low coin.

The lack of personnel is why I used the '8 weeks' argument - Sef doesn't contribute to the attack being better unless the players who actually make the attack better are on the paddock! What we lose in defence seems to outweigh the benefits.
Matterson looks a massive talent, seems so composed, and it would be a shame to screw his game up by making him play some weird 2nd hooker role through the middle of the field - that's all I'm getting at!

re: Lussick + Gower. Gower has played all the spots this year. Prop, left edge, right edge, middle backrower.
I realize Lussick is on (an alleged) $400k+, and we can't ditch him. But (to me at least) there is no need to leave Gower out of the squad - just means we can make him a 'reasonable' offer, and then put Lussicks $$ to better use the year after.

I'd really hate to be paying more than $150k for Gower.

I've been told (from the horses mouth) that they CANNOT flatten it out.

It's been illegal to renegotiate currently existing deals in order to change the amounts since the Bulldogs operate half a mill over the salary cap (but legally) through the Patten/ Ryan trick.

My information is old, and Schu is no longer the boss, so who knows if they have changed these regulations? But I can't see why they would allow an old exploit to sneak back in.

I thought the situation was that, in the case where a new contract is negotiated with a current player, and that new contract covers an additional year or more, then the annual allocation of salaries could be amended. However, as with all contracts (whether extensions or not), the league reserves the right to refuse to register heavily imbalanced salary schedules. So, you can't pay someone $80k this year and $600k next year and expect that to be accepted as the amount of salary cap consumed. But, permutations like $400k, $500k, $600k (or the reverse for a player who is on the way out) may be fair game.

I thought the same.

You have to honour amounts that have been quoted in contracts.

That would be too bad for a young player on minimum wage that a club wanted to upgrade. I can't see how you can have an absolute prohibition on two willing parties renegotiating the terms of their relationship. What you can do is put a reasonableness test on how the new contract will be treated for salary cap purposes.

There is only so much the NRL can veto before they are accused of restraining trade, which is the most evil thing that can be done to a human being, apparently.

With Issac signed up for next year, it is possible peats may start at hooker but spend some time at lock during games.

Lussick was good last year, this year he just hasn't been able to play enough games in row to get some form, injuries/suspension has hurt him.

Not sure if moeroa will straight into the top side next year

I agree with all this, if it can happen then great but if it can't thru cap constraints it'll suck but I can assume that its because we are committed.

Take Sef out of it, I can see why people gets the sh*ts with him and I am not the greatest fan but the role I do like. A lot of players aren't as good as they can be without other players on the pitch so I dont think this makes Joe any worse than most.

Having the couple of big bodies in motion (2nd dummy half and a hit up forward) keeps the defensive line from committing big numbers to forward charges, pushes the creative halves wider into more space, gets our outside backs generally wider than their opposing numbers and the ability to choose from these 3-4 options each time he puts his hands on the ball at pivot. Either Sefa or Matterson has size to not be a liability in defense when we are not attacking and in Matterson's case an additional kicker.

I dont see Matterson pushing Sandow or Norman out next year but I can see Paulo not being retained and Matterson edging closer to this role.

How much do you think George Rose is on down there ? Gower would be taking over the Ryles / Rose position in their group.

i hope dave gower can get as much coin as he possibly can no matter where he signs for. i've seen him in the lower grades for years thinking he was too good for it, so for him to finally come good at such a late stage of his career, he needs to look after himself as much he might think he should repay brad arthur for his faith in him... it's too late in his career to do that

$150K for Gower. He is I think 30. If the Storm offers him $200K, he'd probably go

Relocation costs would take a portion of that. I think it would come down to length of contract offered.

His relationship with BA is obviously strong.

The clubs current retention policy means that we will be attempting to keep Gower.

At what costs I couldn't say but the same policy is being used in all retention decisions and whether someone is tapped to look elsewhere.
