I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but Sorro is pretty old as props go and hasn't really made $$$ in his NRL career. He will NOT take unders to stay. He will make his last contract pay.

So not only do we lose Spencer for 2024 we will definitely lose Sorro in 2025. At the same time Fish and Leota will be on a downward trajectory.

Where is the succession planning? Looks like our roster will be a mess come 2025.

Who are you letting go? Most would say Leota but he has been killing it.
Yep, thought Leota was outstanding yesterday after an ordinary game against the Tigers. He seems to have found an offload this year which has created some much needed second phase play.

This. Not much you can do when a bench or fringe guy wants out. What the club should do though is source someone to fit that role.

That is part we are failing at right now

The clubs plan is hope the kids come good by then. Moving Martin is an easy fix but unlikely to happen

Leota. Spencer is 22 and he will be the best player out of all of them. Leota would get a contract anywhere else in a flash. We needed to be ruthless. "Moses we love you and we always have the 2022 GF to remember, but we need room in the cap and you can go out and cash in with our blessing". I hate doing it, but the Roosters and the Storm have been at the top a lot longer than us because they make the tough calls.

You say that with such conviction. Remember the Panthers reinvented his career, and he made his international debut as a Panther, he may stay.

It would be wonderful to keep every player we develop, but in the real world and under the current salary cap system this isn’t possible.
Players want longer contracts than your cap predictions can take, and other clubs can offer overs because they don’t have a development system to factor in.
Look at the back up players like Katoa, Hopgood, Teague etc that are snapped up by other clubs. You can only deny a player a first grade spot and money for so long, or a starting spot as in the case of Lenui and Burton.
You can’t stop players from signing for big money long term contracts which will secure the future for them and their families especially when it is on overs, such as Kikau, Api.
This is why you lose players you would love to keep, and have to rely on your development system to replace them.
The NRL needs to come up with some sort of compensation system to reward the development of players and the retention of them at their development club.

He either gets money and walks, or he negotiates good money with us which means not only do we not get 'value' anymore - he stops us from recruiting or retaining younger talented middles. Either way it's a bit of a lose/lose situation for us.

Again that is a massive assumption. Remember Sorro's career was just about over if it wasn't for the Panthers.

Blade mentioned we are looking at backrowers. What about Shawn Blore signed for next year for the Tigers but not in their top 17. An outstanding junior looked sensational in reserve grade at 18 or 19 before injury. He has a huge upside. I'm sure he would be welcome back IF the Tigers release him.

Would have to be VERY cheap to risk his injury history

Blore has also had 2 ACLs as well. He is a big risk.

That's Leota though.

Best player on the field in a GF, full plod the next game.

Such a massive gap between his floor and ceiling.

Always remember when we were sitting last or near to it used to worry about how stuffed Penrith was going to be in future. We didn’t get any worse and we were content and happy with our lot.
