Let's be real that's the fan perspective because we want them to stay. Good halves and defensive fullbacks are hard to come by. There will be excellent offers out there for them.
No idea why star players need them but for kids and mid level players they are a necessity. Blokes like Luai just need to pay a lawyer to do the contract

Star players only need them if they are chasing money.

Luai would know our best offer but also who else wants him and the offer. Then decide

A manager won't get any more from us, So save the 6% and go without one

Without a manager a player is negotiating in an incredibly low information environment.

Negotiations are generally very asymmetric. Having zero information makes it very difficult for a player to get the best possible deal.
A player only has to make 17 phone calls

But it’s not just the menial task of ringing 14 phone numbers; it’s having the skill of understanding how to create a competitive tension between those 15 parties.

I really hate Managers. Sometimes I feel some players do not need them. Jarome andDylan can do without and have more money in their pocket!
If you trust the club to do good by you and you're very well established as an NRL standard player you don't need one. A good club will take of you... Until it's better for business to not do that. Then you kinda do.

Interesting article about player agents.

Lol at the bit at the end about hourly rates for lawyers.

They can have massive success fees for getting a ḍeal done and even in the comparison of M&A the investment banker is the analogue for the agent.

A mid tier player needs a manager for such reasons.

Luai is in the elite class a team can either afford him or they can't

If Braith can be a player manager, anyone can do it
