Just because it was out of our control doesnt make it any less painful.

That's right. At full strength we're as good as half the sides in the NRL. We were just rarely at full strength, which stopped us ever building any confidence or momentum.

the knights are missing 3 of their best players right now, kidley snowden and mcmanus....and still the hottest team in the league right now.

we also went through fewer squad players than virtually all other sides.

it's not an excuse. the answer is squad depth, despite it looking a hell of a lot better next season, we still have alot of work to do in that dept.

We used 31 players. The Minor Premiers (for example) only used 25.

Agree the Knights have excellent depth. Honestly, where would Gidley play even if he was fit? It would have to be off the bench. He's far from their best player. The only real loss for them is McManus, and they happen to have a high quality third choice winger in Naiqama.

Despite this excellent depth, a top coach and state of the art training facilities the Knights only scraped into the 8 this year.

Lets not get carried away with them just because they've put together 2 good weeks and the media has jumped on their bandwagon.

The problem with the Knights is they lack genuine stars, although a couple of them are possibly on the verge of stardom.

Of course, it is this lack of stars that allows them to spend more outside their top 17. On top of this they have a strong 'academy' (like most clubs), which allows them to save money on young backups and fringe first graders.

Without an established 'academy' (ours is only three years old, for example) clubs are forced to spend more on depth, putting them at a disadvantage under the supposedly equalising salary cap.

Was thinking the same. But maybe the celery cap in '14 is more than in '13.

Getting rid of players now cannot fix any 2013 salary cap overrun though. Who knows what he's talking about. He may well have got the wrong end of two separate stories, and he's achieved his objective....he's got people reading his drivel.

Never stated releasing players will fix things for this year.

All I mentioned was maybe the cap increases next year, and because of this we may not be in the shit.

rubbish, we'd kill for buderus (even at his age he is a top 3 hooker right now) mullen uate gagai boyd jeremy smith and even robbie rochow (massive potential this kid) to be in our side.

all hardly "fringe first graders" and "young backups"

You can throw in the No.7 too. He had a huge game on the weekend. Tough as nails. Good kicker and has plenty of try assists in his game.

Are you missing the point on purpose?

Because the Knights have cheap fringies (including Rochow) and backups, they are able to spend more on established first graders. The fact they have no merkin as expensive as Jarryd Hayne also lets them spend more across the squad.

And just because we'd kill to have Buderus doesn't mean he's an elite hooker. He's obviously still up to NRL standard, but he's a shadow of the player he was.

That's why he's retiring.

Excellent player. But right now he'd be on huge unders because he wasn't signed from another NRL club. Next contract he will be getting market price (or thereabouts) but right now he's there on the cheap, meaning his club can afford to give him better team mates.
