Also while we don't really know what the actual figures are, 500k is not what it used to be. The salary cap this year for top 30 is $11.45M to put it into perspective.

Would love to know how much we offered him to not be in the same ballpark.
This was my thoughts too. 500k is not that unreasonable nowadays for a highly promising winger and especially with the evolution of modern wingers being like extra props. They're a lot more valuable than before.

This club is dumb but this feels next level dumb even for us.

I thought I read someone say that addo-care signed for 450k, so this essentially makes Dom the highest paid Winger.

Surely Roosters do lose either Tupou, Teddy or Suaali next year.

This needs a bit more context though. That deal was done before the cap increase. It may have ratcheted since then, and I would expect the next wave of top-tier wingers to command more given the cap increase. It's still up there in the top tier though in general yeah.

And certainly, yeah. This is a successful club looking ahead, being proactive and replacing someone before they're gone (not after they've dropped a shit on our doorstep on the way out like we operate). They'll either give someone a tap on the shoulder before they're cooked and move them on - or they intend on losing someone yeah.

How much did the cap increase though? Even if it’s 10% that puts him right level with addo-carr.

If we had some decent juniors coming through this wouldn’t be such a big blow.

The cap increase was 20-30% I think? It was a big one. like 9-9.5m up to nearly 12m.

And more to the point of cap increase, why does it still feel like we have f**k all to spend!

Ponga’s contract is really shitting me now. He better have a career year.

merit: yeah wow ok that’s a huge increase! Makes me further pissed off about the above points now!

It's not just Ponga. Other teams manage to have a highly paid marquee or two and get by. I mean it's contributing, but when you're paying the top 50% of your earners 20% more than you should be for 80% of what they're capable of then you end up here.

We're overpaying everyone, not just Kalyn. He's the poster-boy of it because he's on the most, but the problem is across the roster. Safs are paid origin money for fringe-first grade quality output. Our entire suite of outside backs bar Dom underperform to their paycheques. Kalyn's never on the field and expected to carry all the rest of the laziness. Friz is cooked. Fitz is a fraud. Mann... f**king hell just... Mann... and on and on it goes. Phoenix Crossland ffs. Tyson Gamble... etc... etc...

We should have an Origin quality pack looking at their paycheques. They play like a bunch of strangers that don't give a shit about each other. Throw a blues jersey on the Saifiti's and suddenly they're 20kg heavier wrecking balls.

I mean ugh just look over the roster and try not to throw up in your mouth a little. They're all frauds and should be paying us to watch them.

I think some players do take less (at least in the short term - I can't speak for the post-football careers) to play for premierships too, as much as we hate to think about it. It's really just the inverse of saying "we have to pay more to get talent to the Knights".

Obviously Uncle Nick helps, too. I'm sure he stands by his word after players retire, etc.

Connor Watson is an example of that knocked backed a 3 year 450k a year deal with the Knights to sign a 2 year 300k a year with the Roosters

Young if he signed also signed for less - knocked back the 500k offers

Your argument is because Connor signed for less, Dom also signed for less?

Yes, this isn't an Aku situation. $500k today would have been more like $250k under that cap. $500k is above average certainly, but it's not ball-busting. It's probably about the ballpark you expect the next generation/wave of top-line wingers to be earning. It's elite winger money. Maybe the really super elite/game breakers like a Radradra type could milk a bit more.
11.45M cap for 30 players. Take Ponga out at 1.45M which I'm sure is an overestimation. 10M for 29 players - average of 345k if its maxed out.

Another way to look at it - 29 players with a minimum salary of 120k ea totalling 3.48M. 6.52M to spend "upgrading" 29 players from their minimum wage.

I'm not sure what would be worse, having the money and not willing to spend much above the squad average for Dom or not having the money to begin with. Yikes.

This is a problem, too. He was very marketable. Yeah the bottom line is to win football games, but he would have and probably already was, putting bums on seats.
