This will just be the Joseph Tapine saga all over again if AOB drops Dom. RLPA CEO Clint Newton will be threatening action and every article in the media will paint the club in a negative light, which just leads to more pressure on the playing group.

Or Clint can come out and encourage the Roosters to enter into a FAIR player swap if he gets his nose out of joint if Dom is unhappy playing Reggies.

But he won’t.

Time to grow a set Newcastle.

Players sign with other clubs all the time, it's not he's broken any rules. I don't really get the mentality of dropping him, provided he puts his best foot forward then he should be in the 17. If he gets lazy or his attitude slips then sure, punt him to reserves, but if he's putting in for us and contributing positively to our results then he should be in the team.

Also where does this whole "Dom Young doesn't like Newcastle anymore" stuff come from? I get he's signed elsewhere but have there been any comments or has there been any indication that he's looking to leave early? Sounds like it's the two clubs that are trying to make that happen.

Don’t know where you are reading/ hearing Dom doesn’t ‘like’ Newy anymore?

Yes, players do sign with other clubs. Hwever, he has not been squeezed out. He is not stuck behind other player, waiting to get a gig in firsts. He has signed with another club because he wants to be elsewhere. That fact is indisputable. He does not want to be here. If he did, if he truly loved the joint, had his heart in it… he would have signed the contract he was offered by this club.

It’s not our job to develop another club’s player.

I went to the ice cream shop the other day. Had a choice, but decided on a scoop of cookies and cream instead of mint choc chip like I usually get.

And repeatedly I’ve said I do not blame him for signing wth the Roosters.

He has made a decision to take the cookies and cream.

He has made his thoughts, and favourite flavour, abundantly clear.

He does not want to be here.

It is the club's (and the coach's) job to win games of football and this usually means having your best players on the field. Personally I will feel pretty shitty if we've got our best outside back running around in reserves whilst our first grade team is struggling to win games.

Also this blanket statement that he wants to be elsewhere is a bit much. Seems like he signed elsewhere because he was offered significantly more and the Knights opted not to offer anything close to that. End of the day if they had offered something similar he probably would have stayed.

‘our best outside back…’

Knights offer SIGNIFICANTLY less than Roosters.

Hmmm.

Well then, we don’t rate him very highly so no need to pick him in firsts each week yeah?

Maps is a 5/8 playing as a makeshift centre, and likely never done a day of training on the wing in his life. All dropping Dom does is give Tuala or Hunt a clear pathway back to first grade.

What will hinder the team is dropping a guy to reserves out of spite. Fans and the club aren’t very happy with Dom, but I can pretty much guarantee the playing group still support him and can see the reasons behind him signing with the Roosters.

I’d also say that they’d prefer fielding the strongest team and being in a better position to win games each week. So until he starts phoning it in and not putting in the effort, I think he’s going to be kept getting picked in the side.
My thinking is Maps to centre and Gagai to wing.

Anyway like I said if he’s helping us get results we want and we’re looking likely then 100% keep him in there.

But I imagine there will be a point where it’s no longer beneficial to the club to continue playing him.

Like I said it’s basically the Milford scenario all over. Even last year I wasn’t in favor of continuing with Milford.

Each of us clearly have our own philosophies what’s best moving forward. Mine is always to look forward, and if we’re out of finals contention by round 20 and we persist with Young, then I find that a detriment to the teams future success.

Edit: I also don’t buy that Dom all of sudden doesn’t like us and won’t put in. He’s gone for the “best” offer and I can’t begrudge him for that.

God I hope Mapapalangi has the potential other people have seen in him, because I don't see it yet. I've seen people all off season talking about how he could/should start, etc... and I just don't know where it's coming from.
How much have you seen on him? I only base my hopes on limited NRL game time he got last year. I never seem to notice him do much in reserves in the few games I watched in the last couple of years.

The benefit is you invest in a young talent already on the books like Mapapalangi and get him more FG experience or at least find out if he's going to be a long-term option.

I would like to see Dom get over a dozen tries but it simply doesn't help us moving forward. Just hinders our progress as a team.

Unless we start 6-0 and it's looking likely we can do something this year, I'm probably not in favour of playing Dom.
it absolutely benefits us playing Dom. He is by far our best outside back and having him play will help us to win games. Winning games then makes us an option for other players to want to come and play and ultimately improve our side. If we are loosing every week then players won't be interested in playing for us. It is that simple

I don't get all this crap with people on here saying we should drop him to reserve grade. Its cutting your nose off just to spite your face, a very childish attitude.

What are we the only club where players have signed for a different club 12 months before they left. It happens to most teams these days.

Unless we can get a really good trade that works for us, just enjoy Dom playing for us for the next 12 months

just because Dom signed for another club, doesn't mean he hates this club. He has gone where he sees the best chance to get the best development for his career to get the best out of himself. He moved half way across the world to come to us in the first place. He is just ambitious.

It just shows we are not the club we should be development wise

I feel like most are missing my point.

Lets say I’m watching a Netflix show and there’s another show I’m interested in but it leaves Netflix in a week. If I’m not enjoying the current show then you bet I am going to start the new show to see if I like it or not and maybe finding a way to continue watching it.

Once again. It would be negligent to not develop our own talent and give them NRL experience heading into the 2024 season. Either that or we need to truly figure out if they can rise to the occasion.

Im not saying drop Dom right now. But there may come a point where we have to for the benefit of the future of the club.

What does it say to those within the club fighting for a first grade spot that we are picking Dom who means nothing to us, over them, in potentially meaningless games?

Nothing to do with spite. Once again, just a different philosophy.

If any of us were a professional player playing for the Knights and the Roosters offered us more money to move, every single one of us would take up the offer. Where is all this hate for Dom Young coming from? He ain't stupid, he ain't even from the area. He made the right choice. There is no room for debate. Why hate the kid for making the right choice?

If he does stay, I hope he scores more than 20 tries this season and gets a warm send off. However, if we manage to sign one of the Rooster's backrowers, it's going to be a great move for us.

Where has anyone said or suggested that Dom ‘hates this club’?

Dom deserves his start until otherwise happens. The bigger issue is O’Brien trying to save his arse for 6 weeks as a result.
If you aren’t already aware, Toohey asked Parr about this on his podcast. Answer was pretty generic. Nothing clearer except the club wants Obi to succeed etc. Also Dom getting an early release is not their preferred option.

If Dom stays, hope he does, then he should play and continue to do so until form drops or we are no longer a chance at semi’s then start picking the team with 2024 in mind and that should be the same with any player in the club. It could happen with someone like Frizell.
