Oh yeah I definitely agree. Just highlighting that our SM like to overhype this type of signing. I was actually pleasantly surprised we went out and bought someone rather than being happy to settle with Hunt or Tuala which the Knights of old would have.

well that's a turn around then. Beating his chest about wanting to be a 1 club player blah blah. There's a sniff of a systemic retention issue at the club. On the back of the Dom Young fiasco it isnt a good look.

I wouldn’t say there’s a systemic retention issue. Who have we lost other than Dom that we wanted to keep? Dom is also a 21 year old from the UK who most likely didn’t want to move to Australia to just stay in Newcastle. He was also wooed by the Roosters where he was offered a base salary similar to ours in addition to property, car, 2x return business class flights per year for his family and signing his dud brother to sweeten the deal. The Roosters rarely miss out on people they target for a reason. That doesn’t mean that we have a big retention problem.

Best would be stupid to not test his value. I still doubt he wants to go anywhere but more him and his manager trying to get more money from us. The club just needs to stay strong and not pay crazy overs. I love Best and his loss would be huge…but he’s a centre.

Just because he wants to stay doesn’t mean he just has to automatically agree to terms before November 1. The deal has to be mutually beneficial for both parties and sometimes that takes longer than we would all like. If they still haven’t sorted it out by end of this year then I’ll be concerned.

it isnt just about who we lost but who we kept and how we kept them.

Dsaf gets a SOO selection and is offered big bucks to re-sign. He's on overs. Waaaay overs IMO.

Brailey has 1 full season and is offered a multi year deal to extend. We all know how that story is going.

Dom - epic disaster we will regret for the next decade ( barring injury ) he's a freak.

Apparently we dont have much left to spend under the cap ? Exhibit A Roosters roster, Exhibit B Broncos roster ( I believe they're call the thoroughbreds ). Those Wests owners need to start making some calls to the big end of town and get some serious 3rd parties and head hunt the Roosters recruitment dude ....oh wait . Both Safs havent lived up to their reported pay cheque and are too similar in style of play. They are reaching what is supposedly the peak age for front rowers so there is hope. But I dont think they will ever reach their potential.

Both lack the mongrel to take us to a premiership.
