it isnt just about who we lost but who we kept and how we kept them.

Dsaf gets a SOO selection and is offered big bucks to re-sign. He's on overs. Waaaay overs IMO.

Brailey has 1 full season and is offered a multi year deal to extend. We all know how that story is going.

Dom - epic disaster we will regret for the next decade ( barring injury ) he's a freak.

Apparently we dont have much left to spend under the cap ? Exhibit A Roosters roster, Exhibit B Broncos roster ( I believe they're call the thoroughbreds ). Those Wests owners need to start making some calls to the big end of town and get some serious 3rd parties and head hunt the Roosters recruitment dude ....oh wait . Ok let’s settle for the Roosters cap manager.

I agree with you that DSaf is overpaid, I don’t think anyone will disagree with you there.

Brailey is just a tragedy and rotten luck for everyone involved.

The narrative that we’re going to regret losing Dom is off the mark IMO as we obviously wanted to and tried hard to keep him. We lost out to a club that could offer him significant TPA benefits and a more exciting lifestyle for a 21 year old British lad. We could have offered him another 200k and he wouldn’t have stayed.

I’d love nothing more for us to get more TPAs as well, but need to remember that comparing us to the Roosters and Broncos isn’t apples and oranges. Newcastle is a significantly smaller market.

I'm still pissed off about Dom leaving. He could have been really fun to watch for the next decade.

Not pissed off at him personally, just the situation and not being able to keep him.

The Roosters have traditionally managed their cap well but let's not act like their current squad is a result of genius management. Young is basically the Sua'ali'i replacement and it's common knowledge now that they threw a bunch of extra at Dom that we couldn't. They've also let a couple of depth guys like Hutchison go.

You could make a pretty strong argument we should finish ahead of them again next year.

EDIT: I just remembered Sui'ali'i doesn't go until the end of 2024, but my main point stands.

totally my point. look at their roster. lose a superstar and get another one as a replacement. we do very well with what appears to be 1 hand tied behind our back.

surely Wests Group can compete better with the likes of Roosters Broncos etc Get some TPD going. the counter argument that the club cannot arrange them is baloney. we need to start competing for a Premiership and stop meekly accepting average.

The club cannot arrange them or organise them. It is literally the biggest cap breach you can have. So it is not baloney at all. Broncs and Roosters are tapped into media outlets that are international. It allows for near limitless advertising and private sector opportunities for players. Dom is A marketing dream. Has it all. NOT BAD FOR A KID FOUND ON YOU TUBE.

Surely you dont seriously believe that all clubs dont arrange TPD ? really ?

A car company watched the Knights play and thought " wow I want Dom Young playing for the Roosters" then contacted his agent to make it happen. hahaha ok.

Believe what you want mate. It is all about networking. You'd be surprised how closely it is watched by the NRL.

Not saying a big city is for everyone but I would say 8/10 people in their twenties these days would choose to live in Bondi over Newcastle probably. If our deal was similar to the Roosters', then we probably weren't in with a chance.

If Dom had to make the choice 6 months later than he did, I reckon he would have stayed in Newy because of the connections he had made here plus the culture at the club did a 180 during the 10 win run. I don't blame Dom for going but wouldn't be surprised if he does come back in a couple of years.

It’s not just people in their 20s but Brits specifically. I lived in the UK for 6ish years and it’s amazing how much of mystique there is amongst young Brits about Sydney and Bondi in particular. We were always going to be hard pressed to keep Dom…when the Roosters decided to go out so hard for him it became pretty much impossible. It’ll probably happen with the other 2 as well if they also kick on with us.

It would be nice if we created an environment they didnt want to leave. Secure and settled in Newcastle with great friends/home life and a club consistently challenging for a title.

We win 10 games on the trot and make it to a semi - Knights fans are delirious with joy

Roosters make it to a semi and it is deemed a failure, sack support staff , and coaches are moved on.

in regards to the Dom deal it should not be forgotten we were slow out of the blocks towards them end of 2022. There was no real offer leading into Nov 1. We dropped the ball so to speak. If these lads are equally as promising an upgrade will happen well before Nov 2024.

I don’t know how many times it needs to be said that the club had tried to extend Dom all through 2022, but his manager refused to speak to us before the end of the World Cup, before it’ll sink in.

Then once Dom did get back, the club was fobbed off some more, right up until they were told he’d signed with the Roosters.

He wanted to go to the Roosters. His parents wanted him to go to the Roosters. He signed with a new manager who promised to get him to the Roosters. Would not be at all surprised if there was some tampering involved here and feelers were put out long before he was officially allowed to speak to them.

Yeah. With substandard offers. Same result. The real ballpark offer was not there until the panic set in. The manager was smart enough to leverage it.

It's unfortunate that he became a club record try scorer and we won 10 in a row after he signed with the Roosters. He was sort of in and out of the team before that and also the mood at the club would have dark. Can't blame him for taking the better offer on top of all that.

I doubt he would have left if he negotiated a year later than he did...

In all seriousness, what did you want us to offer a winger that was just coming into FG? In 2022 when we made the offer, 500k for an inexperienced winger was extremely reasonable. Heck. Our best prop and 5/8 are on less than that. Sure, if we were making an offer now after the breakout season he had we’d no doubt offer a little more, but in hindsight and when you’re trying to balance a salary cap I don’t think the club did anything wrong for once by offering Dom 500k at the time. He struggled to hold down a FG spot at the start of this year even.

There’s no doubt we get a lot wrong as a club which I think often clouds peoples judgement and there’s an assumption that we must have f**ked up when something happens that we don’t like (I.e. Dom leaving). Sometimes the club does do everything it can within its capacity, but things still don’t go in our favour for a lot of reasons outside of our control (Roosters TPA money and the appeal of Bondi for a 21 year old Brit).
