It's funny that it's all of the Queenslanders heaping pressure onto the kid by mentioning the size of his contract (which has been grossly overestimated according to our club) at every opportunity that they get.

lol @ the quotes in that article. If you read into the queenslander bullshit, you'd think we're going to get him down here, chuck him in solitary confinement and let him out on game day. Of course we'll be supporting him... f**king idiots.

Thanks for the paste, @Knight76

Edit - ... having read the article now, I gotta say Thurstons comments compared to the rest of the numpty-bunch are fairly tame and to be expected. He seems pretty resigned to the reality at this stage. The Hodges/Meninga show can get stuffed, though.

Mal Malignant has his stab too.
It's not just the money boys. Ponga likes the place and what the club will offer him. If you had treated him better ...
Moot whinging.

What other dominant front rowers are off contract?

Sign Finucane as a prop, he plays like one anyway. I would legit do that given I like our existing back-row anyway and how Barnett is looking.

Scott Bolton worth a look but seems dyed in the wool Queenslander.

Ben Matulino is off-contract.

They would be the first three I chase if Scott falls through.

So. Ficuane (Sp)? And Bird. I was reserved on Bird to whether we really needed him. Whilst I like Lamb, I think we truly need someone like Bird. I don't think he's an organizer though but either way. We need him.

Bird is a winner and competitor most importantly. Our team needs an injection of it.

That article was basically quotes directly from that stupid Fox Qlders Only show.

It's really nothing else you'd expect from those 2 insular f**kwits Hodges and Maninga. Both think anyone leaving Qld must be being coerced against their will. I litterally loled when I turned it on and heard them dribble on about it, especially Hodges who did the exact same thing when he chased the money at the Roosters

Johnathan Thurston believes Kalyn Ponga made a mistake by signing with Newcastle

COWBOYS champion Johnathan Thurston fears young gun Kalyn Ponga has made a mistake by quitting North Queensland to chase a $3 million payday at Newcastle.

Such is Thurston’s regard for Ponga, the Maroons maestro revealed he privately spoke to the teenage sensation about the benefits of pledging his future to the Cowboys.

Ponga ultimately opted for the Knights and many in the rugby league fraternity, including former Broncos skipper Justin Hodges, believes the 18-year-old made the wrong call.

Thurston says he has no doubt Ponga has the talent to succeed in the NRL, but concedes the attacking whiz has chosen a difficult road at the embattled Knights.

Told of Hodges’ view that Ponga erred by choosing Newcastle, Thurston said: “That’s what we all believe. But he has made the decision and he’s going.

“He will make it in the NRL. But the Knights ... it’s going to be a tough initiation to start his career.

“I spoke to him, of course, about staying.

“It’s going to be hard for Kalyn. The Knights have got some great talent coming through but they are a little while away from having success.”

Hodges can understand why Ponga found it impossible to resist Newcastle’s big-money offer, but says the youngster will pay the price for putting dollars ahead of development.

The former Maroons centre is adamant Ponga would have been better off serving an NRL apprenticeship alongside Thurston and Matt Scott at the Cowboys.

“He will be under massive pressure in Newcastle,” Hodges said.

“To be honest, he should have stayed at the Cowboys and learned from JT and Matt Scott and ‘Greeny’ (Paul Green) as coach.

“Going to Newcastle next season on big money as their big signing ... he puts so much pressure on himself and he doesn’t need it so early.

“When you get the money Kalyn will get, there will be massive expectation. If he doesn’t succeed, the fans and the media will come down on him, his own teammates will come down on him.

“I would have liked to see Kalyn grow at the Cowboys, so hopefully he is given time to develop.”

Australian coach Mal Meninga urged Newcastle coach Nathan Brown to provide extra off-field support for Ponga.

“I feel sorry for the kid,” Meninga said.

“He is such a prodigious talent, but 13-a-side footy is different to Nines footy and there is a defensive aspect to it all. I have no doubt Kalyn will make it, but having so much pressure at a club that is rebuilding, I hope he doesn’t find it too difficult and the club can protect him.

“There’s no doubt the money will put pressure on him. Kalyn couldn’t resist an offer like that but he will have to deliver. I hope everyone gives him time to grow and learn, and know that age is a factor.

“I just hope the Knights provide a support network for him. He is on a steep learning curve and he will be thrown to the wolves, but eventually he has the talent and the attitude to make it.”

Hiw the f**k is it right that the Australian coach weighs in on a club issue and puts pressure on Brown? That is totally a conflict of interest and he should be called out!

Its funny that Cowboys fans and players are saying that we are so far off success.

This coming for a side that, in 08-10 was perpetually challenging for the spoon only to turn around an make 6 consecutive finals including a GF win.

THEY think it isnt possible for a team to make a quick turnaround????

Mitch Barnett to remain at Newcastle Knights on three-year deal

Newcastle are poised to re-sign promising forward Mitch Barnett on a three-year deal as the club turns its attention from retention to a host of recruitment targets.

Several rivals were interested in Barnett, who made his NRL debut for Canberra in 2015. The 22-year-old has impressed since switching to the Knights last season and both parties have all but agreed to terms. While he has not officially put pen to paper, the back-rower is expected to do so by the end of the week.

I'm telling you, we will go after Jason Taumololo who is off contract.

Guess this will get moved to the troll thread like my posts a few weeks ago when I mentioned this.

Good to read that Finucane has already been here to see facilities and around club. Hopefully get news on him soon.

Still no OFFICIAL news on Scott, so wait and see there.

Very keen on Bird... feeling he is waiting to see if Sharkies will give him a position change. If not sounds like he'll entertain us. Fair enough really, big ask for anyone to move from a premiership team to A developing team.

Manly keen on Bird too, and they can offer Bozo's origin guarantee and the extra $150k a year that comes with it.

The Dylan walker special.
