Rumoured Targets 3

So we know Cogger is gone next year which is no big loss and it looks like Lamb will follow him out the door as well which means our halves depth is looking pretty thin again for next year. Not sure if the Corey Norman rumours are true but I hope Brown and Mooney are looking at a couple of back ups who are capable of playing in the halves if/when we get injuries again next year. Also it would be good to push Watson a bit because I’m not sure if he’s done enough to lock down his 5/8 position for next season.

If Tyrone Roberts is expecting big money as some have mentioned then I’d rule him out but here’s a few guys that we could possibly get on the cheap who could prove value for money.

Kane Elgey - looks like he’s fallen out of favour at the Gold Coast and won’t be re-signed. Has been up and down and has some defensive issues but has a good skill set and I think he could use a change of scenery. Could see if we could snag him on a 1 or 2 year deal for $200k-$250k and give him the challenge of earning a regular first grade spot.

Mason Lino - Has been really good for the Warriors when filling in this year. Can play half or 5/8 at a pinch and might bet a better opportunity with us.

Tyrone May - He’s a young guy out at Penrith and has played a bit of first grade already and has looked really good in limited appearances, have heard from some guys who know the Penrith set up really well that he’s a gun and will be a first grade regular when he gets a proper opportunity. He’s stuck behind Cleary and Maloney at the moment but could get a run at our club and could see him forcing his way into the first grade side.

The above suggestions are totally hypothetical and I don’t know the contract situations of all these players but they would all be upgrades on Cogger and Lamb and would improve our squad imo.

Anyone else know of any young halves we could target?

Funny how happy we seem to be to lose Cogger and Lamb saying they are not wanted but then say we are a bit short on halves and think about the likes of Roberts who most seem to link in the Cogger/Lamb mould and then have doubts.
Lamb is as good as Roberts or most back up halves but we knock him and others but want a top replacement but don't want to spend any money getting them.
I hope Pearce has an injury free 2019 or again we are in trouble.

Alexander Brimson, would be the one that I would be targeting if I was Newy. I think he looks like a good young talent. He is still unsigned according to Zero Tackle.

Lino has looked good this year too.

I think we more need someone experienced that’s solid without being brilliant that can easily slot in if one of the halves get injured.

Tyrone deserves more money than Lamb ...... but I wonder how much he is asking. He's a great back up but it has been proven he can't hold a starting spot in first grade over a period of time. Too many deficiencies to be on big dollars.

Don’t get me wrong I would like Lamb to stay but all the word coming out of the club at the moment is that he wants more than they’re willing to give him. I don’t know what numbers were talking about but if Brock expects to be paid as a first string half then we shouldn’t be keeping him because he just hasn’t played like one. If he wants to back himself maybe he could take a 1 year deal and try to force his way into a starting spot and then get paid like a first string half. But until then he should be paid as a reserve grade half. If another club wants to pay Brock the big bucks based on what he’s dished up this year then that’s their risk to take. I would rather bring a couple of guys in on cut price deals to play that reserve half role instead of overpaying for Brock to play maybe 4-5 games next year.

Backs we do need, Ramien, Lee and Leutele all leaving, but f**k Fergo he is playing well, I just dislike the man.

We desperately need props so that should be the clubs number one priority. I'd love us to sign two big props and a forward similar to Steve Simpson (one that can handle prop and second row).

With Pearce, Watson and Ponga, we need a back up half who isn't going to break the bank. Lamb could be that player, but I'd be reluctant to offer him over 200K. He must be kicking himself that he didn't attempt to sign with a club at the start of the year, after finishing last year strongly. He basically has halved his value by playing like a plodder in the matched he was involved in.

Also, on Ponga, I'm under the impression that he had clauses in his contract which makes his value sky rocket if he plays rep football. My understanding is that we signed him for around 650K but that price will push the million a year mark due to rep footy. As a result, we may not have has much cap space as we once thought.

I wouldn't even be offering Lamb a contract. As listed above there are plenty of NSW/QLD cup halves better than him. Tyrone May would be a great pick up and he would probably back himself to unseat Watson.

Still think we are a good shot at Fergo, we can offer him a career path and lifestyle, not just a contract, which is something none of the other clubs can really do (legitimately, anyway).

Can confirm Ponga playing rep doesn't wreck our cap.

Can't see how we'd be close to a cap problem with what we have. Yes Ponga and Pearce are on big dollars but who else would be??? Guerra and Herman ok money. That's it. Surely.

Lamb is no where close to a 200K player.

Lamb might not get offers around 200k from any club so no offers might convince him to stay and work on his game, at his best is a good backup halve and worth 200k but only at his best, end 2017 form
