He's not getting 550k, it's a back ended contract where he will earn the bulk of that figure towards the back end of the deal.

Benny going all Dessie.

Brissy and Wayne really are struggling under the pressure of the premiership drought aren't they.

Actually it makes perfect sense in this situation, we get to secure one of the hottest young forwards on the market whilst paying him what he should be earning given he's still very much in development and towards the end of the deal he will be earning what he is worth at the time, it works for us and it works for him, it's a good deal.

Any idea what the salary will be in yr 5 and yr 6 of the deal?

750k, the last 4 years of the deal are 750k, the first 2 are an extension

He's not even the best of the bunch, Carrigan is going to have better career than all of them

Barry Toohey says it 'won't surprise him' if Klemmer ends up at the Knights. He's generally very dismissive of rumours so I think that's significant.

Klemmer is one of the only bulldog players actually worth their large contract. It might just be a tactic to get his full value covered by a new club.

The issue the dogs are going to have is that he is apparently on unders.

You can imaging their best player (by a long way) being on 600k could get a bit disgruntled hearing about all the nuffs on significantly more, particularly if another club could pay him big money.

Toohey's News

- The rumour is that Klemmer is unhappy about being paid what he believes is below market value and is making noises behind the scenes. Bulldogs hold the cards in the situation but they don't really have the flexibility to upgrade him even if they want to. Knights discussions with the Bulldogs have gone no further than an informal meeting between Brown and the Andersons, but they have been told through a discreet third party that Klemmer is not against moving his young family to Newcastle, which they thought might have been an issue.
- Marty Taupau's management have told the Knights he's very unlikely to want to relocate even if he does get forced out of Manly.
- Tyrone Roberts, Scott Drinkwater and Matt Frawley are all names that have popped up as potential halves depth targets. Still no word on Brock Lamb so not impossible that he could stay.
- Knights, NSW u/18's and Australian Schoolboy 5/8 Jock Madden has signed with the Wests Tigers for next season. Knights wanted to keep him but Tigers offered a full-time spot as a development player which Newcastle weren't willing to do. We seem to have good young halves prospects coming out of our ears at the moment so not too worried about losing him.
- Heath Gibbs, who had signed a 3-year deal with the Tigers starting this season, has returned to the Knights citing homesickness. Brown was a big fan of Gibbs before he left so I wouldn't be surprised if he's involved with the NRL squad next season.
- Phoenix Crossland (halfback) and Bradman Best (fullback/centre) are both expected to sign upgraded and extended deals in the near future. Crossland has already done some training with the top squad and Best is one of the best junior prospects in the country right now.

Yeah, this is what it comes down to. Do the Dogs want to hold onto an unhappy Klemmer? You can't hang onto a player that doesn't want to be there at the end of the day. The Dogs might dig their heels in and ask for a transfer fee or some form of sweetener, but if Klemmer really wants out, I suspect he might get it. In this particular case, it might not matter whether the Dogs consider him fair game or not - it's more about how Klemmer feels about his position at the moment.

Do I think it's an ethical way to conduct recruitment? Not really, and I'd be spewing if someone targets Kalyn in a similar fashion (although I think we'd do a fair bit to keep him happy if it came to it, too). I've got no doubt that the media picking up this story, flaunting our "war chest", is no co-incidence - we want Klemmer to know how much we want him and how much we're willing to throw at him. Without directly engaging him, it's a solid way to make sure he gets the message. What I will say about it is that I'd prefer it to be us pulling other clubs pants down than the historical norm of us getting fleeced of any quality we do happen to stumble across.

Klemmer can either choose to play for a busted team for the next few years on a contract that is nearly half his worth, or he can seek a release and try to move to a club that is coming out of the other side of that pain and get paid his market value (hell, maybe even a bit more than that). If the Dogs still don't want to grant a release, I'd expect his on-field and off-field performance to suffer.

Needless to say it would be a Pearce-level coup for the club if we could get him. He's everything our pack needs. We're looking very, very good if Moons can pull this one off.

Klemmer's contract issues aren't new. The issue has been around for a good two years at least and it wouldn't surprise me if he's tired of being ran around by the club. They're making a lot of room in the cap but that room isn't exactly to hold onto Klemmer (at least not seemingly on the money he deserves) but to recruit.

It is in the best interest of both Klemmer, the Dogs and us for this move to go through. This isn't the Bulldogs of just a few years ago where they could sign seemingly anyone for any price like Roosters, Brisbane etc. They need to pay overs and they'll be able to sign more quality players in the right areas with Klemmer's money. Klemmer gets the pay he finally deserves and we get the prop we've desperately needed. I don't think performance and the immediate future of the Bulldogs is a concern for Klemmer, if he was paid what he deserves then he wouldn't leave at all.

On the other notes, Taupau doesn't surprise me and is again one of those factors that the club can't control and one that probably isn't going to change with more $$$. All three of those halfbacks are fine as backups at best. Good to see Gibbs back at the club, rated him pretty highly. I'm excited for Bradman Best so hopefully he does resign; the current schoolboy tour could really open the eyes of other clubs.
