Rumoured Targets 3

It wasn't a Knights fan that came up with it, it was Danny Weidler who reported it.

That doesn't change the fact that the Titans get a heap of help in signing players, where as they seem happy for us to languish at the bottom of the ladder and spend the last 15 years in a "development phase".

Titans have cap space because they didn't have Michael Hagan handing out upgrades like confetti. What "help" are they getting from the NRL exactly?

Are you suggesting the NRL let us cheat the cap to sign Peats?

Almost got DCE last year, Peats and probably Hurrell this year, and miraculously have cap space with a squad nearly completely bought in.

They are certainly being helped by the NRL because the Gold Coast is a market being won by the NRL. We are the equivalent of a safe electorate. There's no competition, so safe to ignore us for a while. Sending lambs out for slaughter, but we'll get 20,000 through the gates so that's OK.

My mistake - their management has been worse than ours and they are in a worse financial hole than we are, yet a bunch of big names get connected to them consistently.

Just must be our bad luck obviously.

I can't figure out how we still have no cap space left. Parramatta found cap space to retire Watmough. Snowden takes up $600K of cap space (given we have no TPA's) and he has retired, yet we are still at the cap?

We really don't get a fair run by the NRL. If it's good enough for one club...

Because we had Hagan managing the cap for the last few years.

The man who brought Kirk Reynoldson to the club to replace Ben Kennedy...

Yeah, bit of a mind f**k when you let go of a tonne of players in the off season, have a couple more retire midseason and only have room for a cut price Pete Mata'utia.

It was a recipe for disaster the moment Hages returned to the club. We all knew it was baffling at the time.

So we were $600K over the cap if Snowden didn't retire?

He has either retired or hasn't, and his salary either counts or it doesn't. How can one club retire a player and his income doesn't count under the cap, but another retire a player but his income is still under the cap?

Snowden's income would help trying to sign someone (anyone at this stage) pre-30 June...

We've made a few upgrades recently. Probably some front loading in that. Pete Mats takes a slice, too.

Parra lost $350K of Watmough's salary off their cap excess which I thought was pretty much all of his salary under the cap for the year (the balance was TPA's).

Even if it was a third, why don't we have $400K to spend under the cap?

It's contentious whether Watmough was eligible to be excluded by the cap because he "may" not play again.
With Snowden it's a certainty. Provisions allow for exclusions from the cap where a player retires for medical reasons.
We are an NRL club and they would have looked at it closely.

Crucially, because Snowden is tipped to be deemed medically retired, the final year of his contract will not count on Newcastle’s salary cap next year.

He gets medically retired at the end of this season according to Fox Sports. This season doesn't count.

Shouldn't there also be a provision if a player takes a year off due to concussion like McManus to have those funds excluded in someway?
