I keep hearing how we need more mongrel but this isn't the 80s anymore, you hit a bloke too hard and it's a sin bin, you stand over a bloke for half a second too long after a dominant tackle and it's a set restart. What we need more than 'mongrel' or in this case another big, slow, injury prone middle forward. I think what we're crying out for is a forward with abit of mobility, footwork and most importantly an offload/ball playing ability

When I say mongrel I’m thinking more along the lines of a player willing to change the momentum of the game in defence. Currently our forward pack defends more like a pack of marshmallows, we take forever to get players on the ground and when was the last time a knights forward got off the line quickly and smashed an opposition player and forced a turnover? It just doesn’t happen with our current pack and it looks like we’re happy to just let the other team get to the end of their set without us forcing the issue in any way.

As I said I’m not a fan of Lodge anyway but I imagine the above is what the coach might be looking for in a player like that.

Is Lodge really known as that kind of player? Usually when I watch the Broncos Lodge is usually either laying on the ground as it takes him an age to get up after a tackle or getting carved up at dummy half or as A defender, I think I've seen more of that than him smashing anyone

That hotel room in the US begs to differ.

So, after the Tigers game, AOB claimed he will go to market if guys can’t do their job. Meanwhile they are in the process of extending Kurt Mann for 2 more years.

I’d like to offer the suggestion that what was said in that press conference is not indicative of our recruitment and retention strategy.

Just further on the above - outside of the fact that our recruitment targets are puzzling to say the least - the club persisting with trying to find a position for Kurt Mann for the past 3 odd years has held us back tremendously. It's not just Manns limited ability himself, but more that the club has bent over backwards soooo much in order to try to accomodate him. If we go down that road for another 2 years, that'll be half a decade of the club sucking while trying to fit a bog average "effort" utility into the team - and oftentimes the spine - for no discernable reason. It's been hugely, hugely disruptive. Any sane club would have turfed him long ago and sought alternative arrangements.

Why? Why are we so hell bent on accomodating Kurt f**king Mann? He has NEVER suggested on the field that his ceiling might be high. At most he has shown glimpses that he could be COMPETANT - and apparently that's enough for us to just all-in on him over and over and over again. Watson is in a similar boat - however I'd say his potential ceiling has justified the effort. You can't say the same for Mann.

It's stuff like this that really does make me wonder just how much influence Moses has over our club. I'm running out of other theories. Our recruitment targets are definitely puzzling, but none of them pisses me off anywhere near as much as re-signing Mann based on his time here, especially this year. Who else in the league plays this bad and has their club offer them an extension?

How you feel about him as a human aside, Lodge can get through a lot of work while also having an offload, short passing game and consistently quick play the ball. That’s a good player for $400k

Every chance the Lodge move is to throw a grenade into the bunker of the Safs and Klem. To motivate them to find form cos one will potentially make way for him next season. Could be a shrewd business move.

will put Barney back to an edge and play a prop at 13. Probably Jones drops off the bench for Fitz.

doubling down on bash and barge when the game is moving to speed.

You're not wrong but it's annoying that he's a player we've targeted.

Regardless of how you feel our front rowers have performed this year, it's probably one of the last positions we should be seeking to upgrade moving into 2020.
