Funny how everyone bagged the Cowboys for letting him go. The irony is now that if you do resign him, it will cost you a lot of freight and you still won't know what you will get.
This is true. Signed him initially based on potential. Paying double that now.
If he really does want to win a premiership, it isn't going to be at the Dolphins anytime soon. It's no good developing under a coach if it's going to cost you 3+ of your career. If he goes to the Dolphins, it's purely about money.
The odds of him winning a title in his career are getting longer every year. Cos he has yet to show he is capable of getting a side to that level. It is a gamble for Bennett as well.

Sorry but based on what? The Dolphins haven't even filled out half of their roster yet. There's no way to tell just how good or bad they'll be just yet

And the Cowboys would suck 1000 dicks to get Ponga back at that same "freight" or higher. Funny huh

would they? The Hammer has outplayed him the last 12 months.
Has he?

I recall Kalyn walking back into the Qld #1 jersey for game 3 forcing Hammer into the centres

I also recall Newcastle making the 8 while the Cowboys were lucky to avoid the spoon

Ponga might not be earning his pay packet but lets not pretend that the Cowboys arent in a huge mess, especially their spine

Cows have been a mess, but he has been bloody good.

Kalyn has been injured or disinterested more often than not.

If the club can get him actually locked in to a real 5 year contract without all these bullshit options, then perhaps they won't have to walk around on eggshells with him as much anymore. Someone, at some stage, is going to have to sit him down and have "the talk" about his motivation and his position as our captain, and as one of the highest paid players in the game.

Or maybe he just is what he is and we're getting ourselves into a shitty situation. Only time will tell.

You’d hope they have this talk or acknowledge what he actually brings before offering a staggering 5-year deal.

Well... yes and no. My point is, Kalyn has been in a perpetual state of "close to off-contract" - which has kept the club in the awkward position of always needing to appease him. A 5 year contract would see him locked down until he's 29, and a pretty good chance at that stage to stay for the length of his career if he maintains the captaincy over that period too.

At that point, the club is in a bit of a better position to be able to speak more freely with him.

Maybe he met Bennett to tell him unequivocally that he isn't interested in joining the Dolphins and Bennett should stop pestering him? Maybe. Just maybe.

It may be possible that no such meeting took place and a bored Murdoch reporter made it up.

Reckon Bennett said just come have lunch with me and I'll buy you a strawberry smoothie?
