Speaking to The Newcastle Herald, Knights CEO Phil Gardner said the club want more English players, and were willing to use their own players to do so.

I do believe Phil Gardner should never comment on anything player related, he really does suffer from foot in mouth.

Who could ever forget his " I'm a desperate suitor " comment regarding the Ponga contract negotiations - truly a facepalm moment.

Misleading line?

He said he'd like for our older players to finish their careers over there and act as scouts for us.

Also explains it as a stategy and what they have in mind regarding SL recruitment. While it may not be "news" to other clubs ( who knows ) but you don't announce stategy to the world, keep ya cards close to the chest.

Gardner reminds me of a budgy in front of a mirror when he talks to the press. He often cops it in and rightfully so. The Ponga circus sits squarly on his shoulders, terrible management.

Toohey's News

- Toohey calls for Kalyn Ponga to make a decision either way ASAP. Says Cam Munster would become a genuine target for the Knights if Ponga leaves.
- Mat Croker is set to be offered a top 30 deal for next season. Dolphins are also interested in him.

OK Kalyn....it's time.

Time to put an end to the circus surrounding your playing future.

Get together with your dad and manager Andre and make a decision. Either commit to the Knights or let the club know they can spend your $1 million-plus salary for next year elsewhere.

The longer Knights skipper Ponga deliberates, the more pressure he is putting on himself and the team. And after three straight defeats, Adam O'Brien's injury-ravaged squad doesn't need to be weighed down by any added pressure from within.

Ponga, himself, doesn't need the spotlight. He has been a shadow of his brilliant best to start the season. A knee issue isn't helping and neither is a forward pack light on for troops due to injury and suspension that has been dominated in recent weeks.

Right now, the Knights fullback is playing like a $400,000 player with the weight of the world on his shoulders, not a million dollar marquee man confidently leading from the front.

And the longer he waits to end the speculation over whether he is staying or going, the more the sentiment among fed up fans turns against him.

Cameron Munster is on the market for 2024 and would become a genuine target for the club if Ponga departs.

But thanks to the contract clauses in his favour, until he and his father make a call one way or the other, Newcastle's recruitment hands are tied.

Crokes in demand

It's been a tough week for rookie Knights prop Mat Croker....but we're hearing there could be some good news on the horizon.

Croker faces a six-week stint on the sideline after undergoing surgery for a broken jaw suffered during his side's NSW Cup clash last Sunday.

He'll be eating out of a straw for the next couple of weeks. But what will make the pureed food taste better is he is set to finally be rewarded with a top 30 contract with the club next season. There is also talk the Dolphins have shown interest.

I think Mounties NSW cup are unaffiliated this year… we should be looking for a tie up.

Good junior base..

Munster? Really? Sounds incredible but surely just media hype?
Why not? IF Ponga leaves then he is just about a straight swap for Ponga's money. Munster is a true game-breaker in this comp. Would be a huge signing.

Would be amazing but would he really come here? Let's be honest here, Newcastle is a place where careers come to die...

Newcastle is so easy going (to put it nicely) and I wouldn't recommend it to players like Munster or the Cheese.

I don't want to over think it like that.

If you ask me "do you want Munster in your team?" I'm answering YES just about every single time.

Can confirm

Would rather pay a million for a known quantity in Munster (multiple premierships and massive success at rep level )

vs the potetinal of ponga, who at this stage has led us to 2x finals round 1 knockouts and played in 4 origin matches (not sure how many of those Qld won)

If we are after Munster why not ask his coach too? He can only say no. He wanted Dom at the Storm right? The issue will still be it won’t be till 2024. Unless Storm are more concerned about where he goes as opposed to when.

If he's able to be registered in time to be named for the weekend I'd imagine he'd be the 14 given his lack of match fitness
