As I said in my previous post I think it's more about sharpening up the roster. We have enough talent currently at the club to be a top 8 team but the problem seems to be our depth because we always fall in a heap whenever we have a few injuries in our top squad.Once again we are looking to rebuild.
Is it that the recruitment has been poor or that the clubs ability to develop first grade standard (as a minimum) players has been poor or the coaching has been poor?
Or all three?
So, will any of the above be any different in the next phase of the club’s recruitment, player development and coaching set up?
good listWhilst I don’t want to do a 2015-2017 level rebuild it’s clear that our roster needs some sharpening up. Unlike the last rebuild we do have a pretty solid core of good players there this time around though which helps.
The following players I'd want to keep as the nucleus for our side in the medium-long term.
KP
Klemmer
DSaf
JSaf
Gags
Best
Clifford
Friz
Brailey (if he makes a successful return from injury)
Young
Lee (if he manages to return to pre-foot injury form)
Croker (as everyone has big wraps on him)
Thompson (assuming he continues to improve)
Then there's some guys who I think are worth keeping on cheap deals to provide some depth and fill out the top 30, although I'm sure some of these guys would get a gig elsewhere for better money and wouldn't necessarily stay to be a fringe first grader here.
Tuala
Hunt
Mann
Clune
Fitzgibbon
Outside of that everyone else we have in the squad can go as far as I'm concerned.
I think our main areas that we need to prioritize upgrading are second row/lock, we need at least two more first grade quality second rowers at the club. I also have concerns about whether Brailey will last in the long term given he's had two ACL injuries already so if I was looking after recruitment at the club I'd also have my eyes open for a couple more hookers as it's clear that we at least need a new backup given Randall doesn't cut it and we might need to replace Brailey in the next year or two if he can't get past his injury woes.
Also I haven't given up on Clune as a decent first grade halfback option but we probably need someone a little more dominant in that position long term so I imagine the club will look to upgrade there as well.
I think our nucleus is top 4 , we've got some great talent at the club.We have enough talent currently at the club to be a top 8 team
I think our nucleus is top 4
Who is in our 'nucleus " in your opinion ?Yeah nah
where on the list of the top 16 wingers in the competition does Hunt sit ?Hunt is massively underrated on here. Good finisher, makes good yardage and easily the best defensively of all our wingers.
Recruitment/retention - C ( fail ) ( besides Friz, Gagai, Cliff )s it that the recruitment has been poor or that the clubs ability to develop first grade standard (as a minimum) players has been poor or the coaching has been poor?
Off contract 2023Why are we looking to rebuild the squad around Ponga in 2024? By that stage he would already be going into his 7th season at the club- what a complete waste of time 2018-2023 would have been.
No way we want both Saifitis and Klemmer in our cap either- that would have to be close to $2m on three front rowers who provide little impact or point of difference. If Leo develops, he could very easily replace one of them on much less cap space, but we desperately need a front rower who can come on and skittle the defence or throw an offload or two.
Our spine is poor and nowhere near top 4 sides either. Ponga is still too hot and cold and drifts in and out of games far too often. Brailey is injury prone and vanilla, while our halves aren't really anything special as well.
How many of these blokes does Moses manage?
