Rumoured Targets 3

Also I don't believe we are in a re-build at all. I Absolutely do get the point of why aren't we further along, that is definitely valid.

But we are in a good position to make positive moves IMO.

We have a super solid starting 17 when fit. We have a lot of dead weight which I'm sure won't be re-signed. And I'm positive we're going to make some really solid signings which will have significant impact on our starting 17, which then moves some of those current top 17 guys as our back-ups.

We are definitely at a crucial crossroad though. We have money to spend and we need to be wise with it. IF the club decides to re-sign too many of these guys who are just not up to it then we'll be in the same position if not worse over the next couple of years.

Basically everything on our retention and recruitment now as to how serious we are about making big leaps in the coming years.

I still think our top 17 problems are a bit deeper than needing to add a quality backrower and a few other solid signings to push out the depth players.

At full strength, our spine isn't in the same postcode as the top 6 or so sides- there's a real gulf in quality. Ponga is locked in, Clifford has potential, but look to see who we can develop or bring into the squad to have a spine to match the top 4 sides. Ideally, sign a top fullback and hooker.

No point in getting rid of half the squad unless you can replace them with better or potentially better. Some can be replaced easily as they have contributed very little to firsts even though we have had lots of injuries, players such as Musgrove, Saulo, Johns.
What has to happen is to sign up quality players in positions of our weaknesses such as half and 2nd row, too many changes are not needed

Ideally I think we keep Klemmer and let go of one of the Saifiti's - probably Jacob. They are all quite similar and we sorta do need something different up front. Hopefully guys like Thompson and Croker can continue to provide that point of difference too.

The other thing to to take into account is the pressure O’Brien is under now. Cos if there are over 2/3 of roster to fill for 2024 then the coach is gong to have a massive say in that. Gardner will want the coach he feels can structure the roster into a top 4 roster.

Tapine has good footwork which Klem & the Safs don't offer so that's a bit plus. I'd be keen for us to bring him back for sure.

Tapine is a bit like the Safs - bloody inconsistent and he fails to fire when needed.

Plus his better half will be into the coach if he doesn't get the selections right or the team jumpers were the wrong shade of blue or travel arrangements didn't suit etc etc.

Tapine has footwork, an offload, can actually move laterally and get quick play the balls. Klemmer on $800k apparently, I'd take Tapine for $600k~ any day.

As a poster mentioned earlier - our spine needs improving or we arent going anywhere.

I dont see any quality on the horizon though , only Munster.

Not sure if we can have the 2 bros and Klemmer in the 17 long-term. Individually I like all 3 but you can't keep them all sometimes.
Dan extended till the end of 2026 but Jacob only extended till 2024. Klem OC in 2023. So it is more a case of if Klem stays.
Can’t see the club ever letting the Safs go.

Some talk on here of Klem finishing up, 29 late this year and 2023 to go on contract so doubt he will want to move away for a last year or two so will probably want an extension.
Cant see either Saf being happy if one, likely JSaf, was to be let go.
Our only problem with prop is inconsistency otherwise I would be happy for them to stay along with Croker developing.

After a slow start to the season and the forum is already talking about cutting one of the Saifitis lol

Man this place sometimes

In all fairness, I've been calling for one of our three front-rowers to be let go for a year or two now.

Cant see either Saf being happy if one, likely JSaf, was to be let go.

Can't remember which one it was, but last contract negotiations I recall one of them saying that they know they'll need to be split one day and can't always be considered a package deal.

Saying it is one thing but doing it is another, can’t see them playing against each other so it’s together or one goes to ESL.
Age alone says Klem is most likely

1. Kayln Ponga
6. Jake Clifford
7. Cameron Munster
9. Tom Starling
13. Kai Pearce-Paul/Will Pryce

Looks like a good spine if you ask me. That's not a rebuild spine, that's a run at the finals spine.
