Rumoured Targets 3

Thing about halves is that we've had and can play Ponga like a 6 without the pressure of defence.
Clune is an organiser. He isn't up to class yet but I reckon he can work better with Milf and the rest of the team.
What we don't need is a batch of possible halves like what we have now. We've been throwing it around trying to find halves.

It’s beyond time to play a proper middle at lock.

play Klem there.

watch us stop being rolled through the middle.

Mann can play 14.

Hold onto the cash? Lose more games because we have to field reserve graders week in week out? We literally can't fill our 30 man roster at the moment. You want that to go down to 25 players only or something? Our club isn't struggling financially. We should want out owners to splash the cash.
There's a cap Yosh, you can only spend so much on that top 30 and if you lock that up on multi year deals with players that aren't worth the price, well you miss out on the good players when they come off contract

Short term pain is a necessity sometimes mate.

We have had 20 years of pain. Is that short term enough?

We need to do something different. We ain't going to catch up by emulating what worked for other clubs 5 years ago.

Mann at 13 would have been great when the 6 again was first introduced. Big men were less effective for a while but since the 40 meter penalty was put back in, big middles were important again. Why we using Mann at 13 two years late?

We need to take some risks and take on projects. Look at Dom Young. Lock in the other young lads from England and keep the Milf.

Even if Milf does stink it up for 3 years, who are our other options realistically??

Locking him up longterm because he's the best option available right this second is the mentality that keep bad teams bad. It's a bidding war between us and the brand new team with no NRL quality halves signed, and even they don't really want him longterm.

If we could sign him for a couple of seasons as a bench utility and backup half/fullback for a salary reflecting that role I'd be fine with it.

Throwing good money at plod players is exactly what we've done for the past 20 years mate

The rest of your post has zero to do with spending up big on players so I'm not sure what tangent you've gone on lol

How is Milf plod? Clearly we are watching different games.

He ups the tempo of our game, takes it to the line and commits defenders before passing and is a bag of tricks.

As good as Clune has been, we should be looking to replace him with a more solid leader type halfback.

players who become available over the next 2 years.

That's the whole point.

This should pretty much end the argument.
Over paying for average talent kills teams.

We need to set the bar higher than "is better than Clune." because that is basically just entry level.

Totally right. So over the next 2 years, who is available that is better than Clune but is better value than Milf?

It's clear to me that we should go with

1. Ponga
6. Milf
7. Hasting
9. Brailey
13. Elliot
14. Jazz Tevaga/Kurt Mann

Something like this is the way forward. Totally possible targets and fits well under the cap.

Over the next two years off the top of my head, Burton, Hastings and Munster will be off contract. Probably a few more as it doesn't include anyone who comes onto the scene in that time or others I am not thinking of.

Having money to pursue any of the three of them is a good enough reason not to over pay Milford.

EDIT: Dylan Brown, Mitch Moses and to a lesser extent Brad Schneider also off contract in that period.
First two it goes without saying would be an upgrade on anyone at the club. Schneider did enough early in the year to interest me. Plays straight, good kick, great defence, strong runner. More upside than Clune and stuck behind Wighton and Fogarty.
Still believe we should be targeting leaders before inconsistent halves.
And this is something Milford never has been and is unlikely to become imo.

Munster coming here? Is that realistic? Burton would cost and arm and a leg. He would want premium Ponga like money to come here.

Hastings I have included because I believe is a realistic target and is the type of player we need.

Just 5 minutes ago you were telling us we need to throw the bank at players because what we are doing isn't working.

Now you're telling us not to throw money at genuine playmakers because we might get rejected?

Make up your mind.

I think Munster signing in Newcastle is about as realistic as any combination of Clune & X making us a contender or about as likely as Milford hitting 2014/2015 form.

Pay Burton what he likes. He is an uncomprimising winner.

Realistic? You spent years harping on that the club should sign SBW

As far as authorities on realism go, you're at the very bottom of the pile

Milf has talent sure but his head goes missing. Have you been paying attention to his form for Brisbane 2019-2021? In a year when they got the spoon he was playing in reserve grade most of the year

That is not a bloke you throw money at.

Wait wait wait wait wait, just before you were saying we should be throwing money at players to get them here.

Make up your mind bro
