Realistic? You spent years harping on that the club should sign SBW

As far as authorities on realism go, you're at the very bottom of the pile

Clearly you have the wrong idea. Who was the player who ended Joey's career? If SBW was on our team he wouldn't have broken Joey's neck!

Over the next two years off the top of my head, Burton, Hastings and Munster will be off contract. Probably a few more as it doesn't include anyone who comes onto the scene in that time or others I am not thinking of.

Having money to pursue any of the three of them is a good enough reason not to over pay Milford.

EDIT: Dylan Brown, Mitch Moses and to a lesser extent Brad Schneider also off contract in that period.
First two it goes without saying would be an upgrade on anyone at the club. Schneider did enough early in the year to interest me. Plays straight, good kick, great defence, strong runner. More upside than Clune and stuck behind Wighton and Fogarty.

And this is something Milford never has been and is unlikely to become imo.

I don’t think anyone wants to “over pay” Milford. We need to see what figures are being talked about for context. But I don’t think the Dolphins will be throwing him marquee money or anything given he’s coming off the scrap heap. If not for the Dolphins I think we’d be getting him cheap…now it’s whether he’s still value.

I agree I would prefer to have Munster/Burton/Moses in that order. But I don’t see us realistically landing any of those three. They will already get top dollar from much more appealing and stronger clubs. We would have to have a new Ben Hunt to the Dragons moment with them, re-defining the pay bracket. I don’t think we can do that either with so much $ in Ponga.

Moses is apparently already being offered $1m a year to extend at Parra…and the Tigers are going to bid hard for him too. What would it take to get him here then? $1.2mn+ ? For Mitch Moses, who is second-tier, and has never won anything.

Munster will be offered $1.2mn+ by the top clubs in an area he wants to live in. Burton I also think is a pipe dream.

Dylan Brown is in no way a 7 so no I wouldn’t chase him. Then we are talking about a reserve grader in Schneider who I agree looks ok but is a very different conversation.

Hastings I think could be gettable. Because the Knights is not a downgrade from the Tigers, and he is not going to chased as hard by other clubs.

I generally of course agree it’s best to be patient with your money and wait for the right player to pop up. I just want to be realistic about who is on the menu.

Milf has talent sure but his head goes missing. Have you been paying attention to his form for Brisbane 2019-2021? In a year when they got the spoon he was playing in reserve grade most of the year

That is not a bloke you throw money at.
I think it's a given he had a rough couple of years as did the entire Broncos organisation. Milford might not be a superstar anymore but he and Ponga are still a class above the rest of the team and despite being around forever he's only just turned 28 so there's no reason why he can't recapture his form from a few years back. I think Milford struggled with being the main man for a glamour club with high expectations, I think being out of the limelight and playing his own game suits his personality which seems kind of introverted.

Thats mostly true but playing in Newcastle will still bring expectation, especially if he signs a multi year deal on good coin. Hes fallen apart before under the weight of expectation both from fans and from the pressure of a big $ deal. I am not keen on repeating that

what expectaction is there in Newcastle? Let's be real here, Gagai has been playing like a bum and hardly anyone has realised until he brought that form to origin, I mean 3 or 4 weeks ago people were mentionion him as a buy of the year candidate

Agree on the above... But that's the price to pay for a premium half.
If by signing Ponga to a mega deal we cannot afford one and we've condemned ourselves to only mid-tier-at-best play makers then let's cut out all the demands for O'Brien to be sacked for not making us a force.. Because we're never going to be.

We can either pay a premium half at a premium half rate, or bemoan the fact they're too expensive and continue to just exist in the same void we're in now.

It has been shown in the past that a team can be successful with 2-3 players on big money and the rest of the cap being used on the right bargain buys. Melbourne have been doing it for 2 decades and more recently Manly made the top 4 with a big chunk of their cap tied up in DCE, Turbo and Jake T.

if we had a chance at getting an elite half for around $1m then we need to have a crack but it’s important not to spend that sort of cash on a second rate playmaker.

Who exactly?

Gags has been average since Rd 2. The fact woosh hasnt been in here blowing him is a fair indication that hes going pretty pooly

The Saifiti boys are getting ripped online. Fans wanted Ponga gone with the whole contract saga and now his value is being questioned all over the shop. Everyone wants Best gone. Clifford is languishing in reserves

Hell' outside of Frizzel, Barnett and Young, most of the boys cop a lot of flack for their lack of performance

Unfortunately, to do that you need a. good junior systems and b. a good team culture to bring new players into

We have neither

Rough to leave big Klem out of that haha but true what you’re staying.
Yeah fair, Klem has been great.

I do also remember a fair few fans wanting him gone because "with him and the Safs we have 3 props the same etc etc" being the narrative. Thats looking very wide of the mark right now

a few fans on social media is abit different than what he was copping in Brisbane where he was public enemy number one for most of the actual media as well as ex players etc. If you're going to talk about expectations we'd be pretty low on the list amongst the league

He flys under the radar a bit now because he is on a low end deal coming off the back of many months out of the game

If Milford signs a big $ multi year deal you watch that change overnight

More rumblings that Hastings may be on the outer, this time linked as a possibility for the Bulldogs with no mention of Newcastle, but I imagine we'll still be in the equation if he's on the move. Personally I'd be a lot more confident building with/around Hastings than Milford.

During the 2 year period when the 6 again was introduced, big metre eaters like Klemmer were less effective. HOWEVER, that's not the case anymore. He is averaging like 160m a game and never misses a tackle playing 70 minutes a game. He literally carried the middle because the Saitifis were average, Mann is tiny and Thompson/Croker were raw. I hope he plays a couple more years here and retires a legend.

Re: Milford. If people think we shouldn't sign Milford because we should sign Munster/Moses/Burton, I don't know what world you're living in because it ain't happening. Milford isn't going to be paid $1m here and won't be expected to carry the club. That's Ponga's role. It will be Ponga = Batman & Milford = Robin. I reckon it's the perfect fit. We just need to sign a organizing halfback who defends well and has a good long kicking game.

The million dollar days are over for Milford, I think around the $500k mark is more in the ball park of what teams would probably pay for him

Not even 12 months ago his market was a $200k 1 year deal from souths.

I think I saw where Milf was offered $700k

Surely not, but if the Knights have offered Milf 3 years and over two million dollars they should fold or move to perth or something.

Dude, do not underestimate how much clubs are willing to pay for a "quality" half right now. $500K is going to be on the low end
