Recap of todays Toohey’s News podcast with Max McKinney (new main Knights writer for the Newcastle Herald)
- Seems pretty certain that AOB is safe until next season at least. McKinney seemed more logical, asking how many coaches survive wooden spoons if that were to happen, to which Toohey strangely compares this season to Trent Robinson and the Roosters finishing 15th in 2016, and says that AOB has ‘runs on the board’.
- Knights are still privately ‘reasonably confident’ that they’ll land Brooks. Joey is the main force pushing for it, followed by AOB who ‘can’t wait for a star halfback any longer because he might be out of a job’ (SOS Peter Parr).
- Suggested Crossland probably won’t be here much longer.
- Says there’s probably a few contracted players they would like to move on, and they’re already in a healthy position salary cap wise, but would be even healthier if they can move Klemmer. Also speculates it could help them make a bigger play for someone like Munster in 2024.
- Toohey’s version of the Parramatta saga is: the Eels approached Klemmer’s manager who took it to the Knights. They said they would entertain the offer but wanted the Eels to keep him and pick up his contract next season. Toohey doubts Klemmer personally wanted out and notes that Klemmer plans to live in Newcastle after footy even if he he has to go somewhere else in the meantime. Says he’d be surprised if Klemmers management aren’t already negotiating with other teams.
- Gardner and Hayden Knowles seem to be the main ones unhappy with Klemmer, Toohey doesn’t know what role AOB has played in it.
- Seems Gardner has in fact been the one running the football side of things thus far but has essentially given himself the sack by bringing in Parr. Gardner tried to bring him in previously before appointing Buderus.
- Neither believe losing the captaincy is the reason for DSaf’s poor season. Toohey speculates that off the back of signing a new long-term deal and becoming an Origin mainstay he may have “took his eye off the ball” in pre-season. Notes that he has admitted as much himself and already ruled himself out of the World Cup.
- Despite a couple of our assistants being off-contract currently, Toohey doesn’t think they’ll bring in an experienced coach to help out (Paul Green given as example) because of fears it’ll make AOB look even more under pressure. (Again, SOS Peter Parr).
- Also notes Paul Green’s history with Ponga makes him an unlikely target regardless.
- When asked about the high turnover of staff in recent times Toohey notes it’s not a ‘happy place’ and AOB can be ‘quite volatile’.
