You really have no idea what a CEO does, do you?
I doubt he scouts for fringe first graders, but if you're convinced then that's enough for me I guess? Typically a club has you know, coaches... recruitment managers... scouts... that deal with the nitty gritty of that sort of thing. It would then be up to them to sell it to the CEO to sign off on.

We don’t actually have a recruitment manager at the moment. Advertised, insufficient qualified candidates.

The CEO should absolutely know what he is signing the cheque for.

How do you think that works, though? Do you think he's scanning NSW Cup and first grade games every week himself, or do you think the football department comes to him and presents a case to sign them?

The man doesn't have enough hours in the day to run the entire Wests Group and also worry about the nitty gritty of every depth player we sign. It's delegated work.

f**k. You actually get what I’m saying.

Why are we disagreeing?

Phil would have to approve every contract and payment above a certain amount. First grade player contracts absolutely fall in that category.

If he approves something that proves to be a failure, it’s on him. Just like any other CEO.

Did Gardner run over your dog or something?

OK I will play the sucker for the benefit to all on here.
Why if players are contracted using the Cap allocated by the NRL does Gardner have to pull the financial strings. If all players are signed and paid under the Cap why would it effect Wests in anyway. Success by the Knights would reflect positively with Wests and the opposite with failure.
I understand that other costs would be Wests problem but those costs would be similar if you finish top 4 or bottom 4 unless of course some things are done underhandedly.
Wests and Gardner would look much better, especially with Newcastle and Knights fans with a successful team. Gardner is the person that is reported to, surely, and those running the football side report to him and success and failure should be with them and if success Gardner basks in that and if failure then he sacks and finds someone hopefully better.
Please forgive a naive fan.

I’m fairly sure he’s related to a fair few members of this group.
Just give him credit for once. He’s obviously shown leadership and gathered all the players over a zoom conference during the week and told them if you don’t perform today, it would leave him no option but to go and sign Mary mcgregor as our next coach. Outstanding leadership and tactics to get the boys motivated for today. Cheers to Phil.

The thing is, the Knights are a separate entity - fully owned by Wests, however it is a separate company and has its own board of directors. The Knights aren’t like one of the hotels or gyms that Wests own - they are a separate entity.

Gardner is the CEO of both. He actually has a bit of a conflict of interest because he is making decisions that could be adverse to either Wests or the Knights - I don’t know how he adequately does that. He also has the responsibility of managing members assets and funds - Wests are a not for profit organisation.

I know I’m alone in thinking he hasn’t done a great job managing the Knights - a shiny new training facility majority paid by the State and Federal Governments has everyone super impressed. The churn of staff, lack of consistency and stability (which leads to how we develop our juniors) and ultimately results on the field concern me.

How long has he actually been in charge here? How many years before that were we utter crap? He took us from utter crap training on a university paddock to some of the best facilities in the country. We aren't in debt and in we don't really fall behind other NRL clubs in many respects apart from performances on the field. I think he deserves a lot more praise. The foundations he has set now will reap benefits later down the line probably when someone else is CEO.

We’ve been crap for 20 years.

Wests took over November 1, 2017.

I legit think Fitzy is having his best season with us. And all the credit to him doing it in his final season with us after we’ve come accustomed to players coming here and having a crap final season with us.

Because he’s going so well I do think he’ll be missed. Like it finally feels like he’s put it all together this year, especially on the leadership front. I’ve noticed him take more tough runs and be that guy to rush off the line to put a big hit in.

All the best to him and I’m glad he’s going out and not leaving anything left in the tank, he’s giving it his all for us right now.

Good luck to Fitzy. He’s been a player who has always put effort in, even if he has a few errors in him. Not his fault we over relied on him to run off Ponga and get nowhere.

He’ll definitely be missed- it’s no surprise that he’s found a bit of form again after having his first proper offseason in years and playing injury free.

Wonder why he’s gone to the UK? He’s still got plenty of time left in the NRL and you’d think that there’d be clubs looking for backrowers. With Dad’s money, maybe his bucket list is more important than $$ at this stage of his life.

I am pretty sure he was very reluctant to play against us - to his credit he's a Knights boy through and through. So I'm sure that was a huge part of it. It's also possible other clubs didn't want him, though.
