I think it would be vindictive if we just denied the release rather than taking whatever benefit we could get. I assume the club's present refusal is just part of the negotiation. It might be that cash (a transfer fee) is all we can get. The question is how much. It might not help us replace Lomax in the short term, but cash certainly isn't worthless. The right amount could be very beneficial. Our pathways program won't be cheap. There's evidence the Panthers have stopped spending so much on theirs, for example. Having the best pathways forever would have to be unsustainable.

That’d be hollow, however in all seriousness I’d take the $200k if the Scum (all officials, players and fans involved in 07 & 09) earnestly admitted they didn’t deserve the premierships, apologise for ever celebrating them and hand over all their fake trophies and player rings/medals to be destroyed. But it all has to be earnest otherwise no deal.

The real cost is the opportunity cost of losing a current Origin and Test player without replacing him with someone of comparable quality. I’m no fan of Lomax, but the team is clearly worse off without him.

That’s reasoning for the original contract release, it isn’t reason for breaking the agreed terms of that contract release

Asking someone to honour an agreement is not punishment. A third party offering to compensate the first party is not a mitigating factor, especially when the third party is a direct competitor in the same market.

It certainly can be, if one party gained no benefit from it and the other wants to hold them over a barrel.
