So should we really just punt both of them and re-sign Robbo for another year as the backup and see how Fogarty goes?

Robbo can also cover 9 if needed.
Robbo is better then both Kelly / Cornish. Forgarty is pretty small I think, don't think he will be playing NRL anytime soon.

I reckon there is a far chance Dolan / Dargan could finish next as year better back ups the Cornish / Kelly / Fogarty.

I would offer all Cornish / Robbo / kelly second tier contracts and see who accepts. It's not like it would affect our cap.

If Robson is happy to sign as a backup that would be the best option. We could even give him more than minimum salary in the top 25. But how much would he want to put himself through another pre-season? I reckon he'd currently be on about $100k for half a season. What sort of pay cut would he cop to go through it all again?

What else would he do that will earn him more than playing NRL? Even if it is $100-$150k?

We could pay him $75k so he isn't top 25. I think he is a landscapor by trade, so not sure what he has lined up but $75k is a decent wage compared to returning to landscaping.

He could be keen.

Also assuming we sign a "specialist half", do we really need another half in our top 25? We have Taka / Gutherson and potentially Edwards who can all fill in for a game or two if required, rather then wasting a top 25 spot on a backup.

Well there are eight backups in a top 25, so I can't see why you wouldn't have a specialist half there (specifically a general play kicker), given the importance of the position.

That's harsh. In 13 games this year he has 8 try assists and 8 line break assists. That's not Thurston class but it's certainly worthy of a top 17 NRL half. In defence he has been good enough as well. Only four times has he missed more than 2 tackles (once he missed 5 tackles and twice he missed 4) - those numbers are also typical of an NRL standard half.

Of course you can say the stats don't tell the full story, but over half a season they tell a pretty good story. Certainly more of a story than anecdotal recollection of having watched his worst game. Marshall's biggest issue is how many games he has missed this year (7 from 20), and given his age this might be the new normal for him. But in his defence, the last time he missed more than two games in a season was 2008.

Perhaps I was a little harsh. Those stats are below average for a first grade half but not the worst for each category. However, the fact he is towards the bottom for both LBAs and TAs indicates he is one of the worst halves currently going round. Benji also has one of the worst error rates per game (1.3), only trumped by Morgan who offers plenty more of LBAs and TAs. I'd safely classify him as a fringe first grader.

True, but Hodkinson is playing in a worse side and is producing better numbers.

Also, you have to consider whether it's the dragons making Benji worse or Benji making the dragons worse

I suspect most second tier players have standing offers of a single year extension at their current clubs.

I'm no sure why people are calling Gutherson and Robson our 5th and 6th choice halves after Cornish...?

Cornish has been overlooked for the chance to fill in at half in the early season absences of Foran and Norman, and if you count Kelly and Taka and even Edwards then Robson and Gutherson are 6th and 7th choice halves, above Cornish at 8th.

It seems BA doesn't see much of an NRL future in Cornish?
