He might have debuted in 2010 (the year he turned 21) but they had Hodkinson (and Foran) on the books, so they were able to let DCE develop in reserve grade for the year. And yes they ran their feeder team in the QLD Cup because the standard was higher. I believe the Tigers, Raiders and Storm did a similar thing, which led to the NSWRL threatening to ban those clubs from participating in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup competitions unless they moved their reserve players to the NSW Cup. The Storm have recently moved their reserves back to the ISC (QLD Cup) and now play their under 18s/16s players in the Mal Meninga and Cyril Connell Cups (QRL versions of SG Ball and Harold Matts).

The last 'best half in the QLD Cup' that a club took a punt on was a guy called DCE. Manly did it because they had just lost Trent Hodkinson to Canterbury and were in a similar situation to us. The QLD Cup is superior to ours here in NSW and constantly produces NRL stars, especially in the last few years.

I hope we get a reliable goal kicker for next year.

We might have to make do with Gutherson in the top 17. But it would be good to have another option.

Agreed. It looks like he might actually be a gun goal kicker. The article below states:

I thought humble was the next top half from qld cup after dce that switched to nrl. I'm willing to tolerate bunji if desperate, but Fock sowie off

How many clubs would be willing to release a contracted top 17 quality halfback at this stage of the year? The only ones would be the clubs with a surplus. I can only think of Hastings at the Roosters, plus the Titans, who would probably grant Roberts a release (not Taylor or Elgey). Otherwise there's fringe first graders who will want an opportunity - Fa'amanu Brown, Ryan Matterson or Connor Watson.

Alternately there are the off-contract options Williams, Marshall and Nikorima. And Foran.

With all these options, the following clubs have a vacancy for a first grade half: Parramatta, Melbourne, St George.

If they're not playing in Australia already do we even want them? Players go to the Super League because they're not good enough for the NRL (or in Carney's case, banned). If we need a backup we can surely find one in Australia. And if we need a top 17 player Australia is the only place where they exist.
