Evans has played 70+ NRL games for a strong club. Lane is a journeyman with less than 40 games and less than 50% wins.
Next year we have the following middle forwards contracted to the club:

Alvaro
Brown
Mannah
Paulo
Tep
Lane
Evans

I think it’s likely we’ll re-sign Peni or Gower at the very least, both of which seem to be higher in the pecking order than Evans.

With that being the case, the following are certainties for our top 17:

Paulo
Brown
Alvaro
Mannah
Tep

This leaves another 1 or 2 spots to be filled from the following:

Evans, Lane, Peni or Gower (whichever we sign). None of these players are certainties so I’d pretty much class them all as fringe first-graders as they are on the fringe of playing first grade. Peni may become an average 1st grader if he gets the dumb shit out of his game.

For what it’s worth I can also see Kaufusi overtaking some of these “possibles” in the pecking order at some stage next year.

Once again, you are yet to explain how replacing overpaid fringe first graders like Vave and Matagi with fringe first graders on fringe first grade money (like Lane) is actually a problem...?
Firstly who said he is on fringe fg money, from all reports $300k is being thrown around. Hardly fringe money. The problem is we signed another fringe first grader in a team full of fringe first graders.

What reports? These reports keep on getting f**ken mentioned but no one can post a link to these bloody reports!!!

A post by an idiot on nospam46 is not “by all reports”!!! FFS!!

Come on post a link to the reports?

So do you think Hastings would be a good gamble for Parra.?
He could well be. If has Aspergers or something similar I'm sure the players could accommodate him with whatever idiosyncrasy he has and Manly would be paying most of the freight. Has shown in the past is above average as a half and would have a good skillset for a hooker.

Gleneel nailed it. We're signing another fringe forwards into a pack of mainly fringe players

Nothing more needs to be said. It's another desperate signing by Arthur and Gurr, and this is what's killing this club.

It's another Evans waste of cap space. Add these two together and Parramatta are exceeding upwards of 550k - 600k of wastage. Both players will never cement starting positions

Ba is only digging a larger hole for himself

Beau Scott retires from NRL

Parramatta Eels co-captain Beau Scott has announced his retirement from rugby league today following a season ending ACL injury sustained earlier this year.

Beau made his NRL debut in 2005 for Cronulla, and played for St George and Newcastle before joining Parramatta in 2016. Over the course of his 244 game career, Beau has won a premiership, played for NSW Origin and represented Australia.

“I feel privileged to have played the great game of rugby league professionally for the past fourteen years, and I’m grateful for the opportunities and experiences that have come with it,” said Beau.

“I would like to thank all of the players, coaches and support staff who I have been associated with throughout my career, and I’d like to acknowledge and thank all the fans and members who have supported me over such a long period.”

Beau said he and his family are looking forward to the next phase of their lives and he plans to further his involvement in Arcade Trader, an arcade and vending company, while preparing to launch a new app called Sign Time.

Parramatta Eels Head Coach Brad Arthur said it was difficult to lose such a tough and fierce competitor to injury.

“Beau is one of the most experienced members of the Parramatta Eels squad, he has always given his best, and he’ll be sorely missed," said Brad.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
NRL debut: Cronulla v Melbourne, round 22 - 2005
Eels debut: Parramatta v Broncos, round 1 - 2016
NRL games: 244
NRL tries: 32
Premiership winner in 2010
Rep honours:
• State of Origin for NSW (2010-12)
• Kangaroos (2011 & 2014)

How many of our forwards would make the starting sides of the top sides???

Brown, Mau and who else??

Paulo is signed for next season that makes 3. Tep if he can find some form is a maybe. We had plenty of depth this season but we were lacking in quality.

Quality big men win big games, and we are seriously lacking in quality.

Really? Why wouId Manly be so stupid to pay freight for a player they don’t even have contracted?
Josh, you do know about contracts don't you? They punted him so have to continue paying his contract until it would normally run out or offer a lump sum that he is satisfied with before he signs a release. As Manly have cap problems I assume they'll continue paying him as per his contract.

Only Brown would be likely to make any good team's starting sides.

It comes from a lack of foresight from Arthur and his recruitment staff. We've definitely spread the cap too thinly.

There's no quick fix either. It takes years of diligent recruiting to build a sustainable roster.

Say hello to 2021 if the club start with smart recruitment now. Judging by the recent appointments of Lane and Evans - it could be 2025 before we can see success

With Scott retiring, does that mean we get cap dispensation for the remainder of the year?

It may free up 4 months worth of his contract (July - October) if we didn't pay him out. But I'm guessing we did pay him out otherwise why would he retire? In that case it probably just frees up a top 30 spot to promote someone.

But fingers crossed we can get Lane here early and have him working closely along side Evans

, he has no contract. They released him thus all payments have been sorted.

Alvaro, Mannah and Moeroa wouId also make the top 17 of most clubs (if not all)

Isn’t a medically forced retirement treated differently under the cap than a normal retirement payout? Otherwise Watmough’s payout would have counted towards our cap.
