POMS JOIN RACE FOR AUSTIN

The Parramatta Eels will have to compete with the rich English Super League club Leeds for the signature of Canberra Raiders five-eighth Blake Austin. Leeds boss Gary Hetherington is a huge Austin admirer and is desperately keen to convince him to play in the UK.

HAYNE SET TO EARN CONTRACT EXTENSION

Parramatta Eels coach Brad Arthur is leaning towards extending the contract of his former superstar Jarryd Hayne, who played his best game of the season against the Dragons on Thursday night.

“We’ve got eight weeks to go and I can’t see him going to another NRL club,” Arthur said.

“Importantly, Jarryd needs a good off-season,” Arthur said.

“He needs to be there in November and do the six or seven weeks before Xmas and then the five weeks after Christmas.

“We’ll just wait and see what happens over the next eight weeks.”

It would be interesting to look at how many appearances were made by the 18th-25th players to make the most appearances for each of these teams.

I CBF though, TBH.
From last years top 8, the average number of games played by player 18 was 13.875 and by player 25 was 2.875. This does include finals appearances where relevant.

Need to take into account that player 18 could easily be someone who was top 17 and got injured (i.e. Chayse Blair played every round and was injured in round 14).

13.875 and 2.875? Do you think we're idiots? I accuse you of making up those numbers and not putting much effort in to boot. If I'm wrong I will take a month off this forum.

Because I used 8 teams, then every whole number has the potential to be 1/8th when producing an average. 1/8th as a decimal is 0.125.
111 games played by 8 players in position 18 = 111/8 or an average of 13.875.
23 games played by 8 players in position 25 = 23/8 or an average of 2.875 games per player.

See you in August mate.

I don't see how a bloke can play 2.875 games, no matter how shit he is. I suppose he could have played two full games and then been sin binned in the third game. But what are the odds of that happening to the 25th best player in every top eight team? I reckon MJC is making shit up again.

I think you just broke my brain anyway. :) Will take at least a month to recover.

He means there's only room under our salary cap for players worth $500k+
Yes we have 8 forwards contracted for next year so we need to strengthen them with better players, not more of the same. We have the money so have to build a strong squad of 17 players and fill the rest with juniors and cheap journeymen. Instead we have a squad of cheap journeymen in the main and as has been proved it does not work.

I do think we've got too much depth though. But maybe we did that because we knew we'd have a lot of injuries.
For some reason we always have far too many injuries. Is it to do with lack of size in the forwards and our smaller players get whacked every game? If you look at the teams with bigger forwards they seem to have fewer injuries. Over to you Pou for the stats!

My question to you was how many of them would be cheap? I can't see how any of these guys would be on less than top 17 money:

Alvaro
Brown
Evans
Mannah
Ma'u
Moeroa
Paulo
Takairangi

I reckon the cheapest of them would be on at least $200k. There's probably room for a couple such players in reserve grade, but how many? You don't want too much of your cap on the sidelines when the team is at full strength.

No no please, you're the one with the theory. Back it up or GTFO.

Have our small forwards been injured? Here's the players who have missed 5 or more games due to injury:

Brown
Evans
Gutherson
Hayne
Pritchard
Scott
Williams

Brown and Scott are small forwards, however this is Brown's first serious injury in first grade. Scott is 34, so injuries are to be expected.

My own theory is that we have more than the average number of injury prone players for the simple reason that we need to take more risks. If we take the low risk approach we will have to pay more for talent (injury prone players being in less demand and therefore cheaper) and therefore fit less talent under our cap than the TPA-rich clubs whose best players all play 20+ games every year.

Isn't the real question that every club is challenged by "how much of your cap do you spend on the top 17" though?

Obviously more than 60% but if you only spend around the minimum on players 18-30 (averaged at say $100k so say $1.3m) then you have around $7.8m to spend on your top 17. This is over $450k average.
Give your top 5 players an average of $600k and you drop the average for the remaining 12 down to about $400k each.

If we said Moses ($650k), Norman ($750k), Jennings ($700k), Scott ($600k) & Hayne ($500k) were our top 5 paid players at a total of $3.2m which isn't unreasonable based on media rumours, we can afford to pay around $400k each for the balance of the top 17.

Are you suggesting poor squad management?
