We need bigger backs FFS! Gutherson and French made less than 60 metres between them last night. The fewest metres made by any of Souths' back five was Johnston with 64.
Meanwhile we had four middle forwards make over 100 metres. Souths only had three.
If we keep the same backline as we have now, plus the addition of Fergo, it will be good enough and fast enough to trouble any side in the league. As odd as it may sound it was the forwards who floundered against Souths when they stepped up when they got even possession. Also Haynes last 20 min where he went missing due to fatigue. But that again is a sign that the forwards missed their assignment when the team has to rely on a winger to keep them in the game.
Even though our forwards played well when Souths were playing flat, we didn't tire them out when we were dominating. That's because our forwards aren't big and brutal enough with their smaller body shapes. It doesn't hurt the opposing defenders or wear them out as much. Then when a big and powerful forward pack like Souths decide to kick up a gear, we can't go with them and most teams know this.
Most teams know when it comes to playing Parra and defending, move up quick with numbers and go in with three to put them down. Work them over like this and then just run straight and hard. Our boys will get gassed quickly and then when we have the ball, our forwards will not be able to bend or break the line or off offload. Then the backs will find less time and space to do their thing. Teams don't fear our players at all and that is a telling factor.
Paulo, and Lane are a great start, but that had not be where it ends or we will find ourselves in a similar position as we are now very quickly next year again. We may not come last but we will be in the lower 8 again. Paulo is a great player on his day and I like the signing, but he is a slug who won't put in if the team is not doing well. He is a fare weather player so to speak, who needs a lot of guidance off the field to keep fit and focused. If he senses that we are in for a shit season, his enthusiasm will wane and therefore his game suffers. Similar to Jennings.
