Why New Zealand are wasting their time chasing Parramatta’s Dylan Brown
NOVEMBER 28, 2018PARRAMATTA has issued a blunt warning to all NRL rivals to back off trying to poach young gun halfback Dylan Brown.
In the wake of Shaun Johnson’s shock decision to ask for an immediate release, reports have now emerged that the New Zealand Warriors have identified the 18-year-old former Australian Schoolboy to be Johnson’s long-term successor.
Brown actually hails from New Zealand but moved to Australia as a 15-year-old to play in Parramatta’s junior rep system and attend high school.

For years the Eels have copped it for failing to keep hold of their best juniors but new general manager of football Mark O’Neill says Brown is one the club is determined not to let slip.
And it is understood the revelations about the Warriors’ keen interest in Brown has hardly caught the Eels by surprise.
In fact, claims have emerged that the Warriors’ head of football Brian Smith and recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan were spotted in conversation with Brown at a match earlier this year.
The Daily Telegraph was unable to contact Smith but O’Neill assured fans that the club was not in any immediate danger of losing the rising star.
“What is fact is that Dylan is contracted until the end of season 2020,” O’Neill said. “And he is someone that we see has a big future at our club.”
Brown has been tipped for a huge future.
The NRL has clear guidelines that strictly prohibit rival clubs from negotiating with contracted players more than a year before their current contract expires.
It’s understood the Eels would expect all clubs to abide by those rules and for the NRL to enforce them.
That means even if the Warriors are interested they are going to have to wait.
One of the Eels’ NRL development players for 2019, Brown has been extremely impressive at pre-season training so far, constantly challenging the super fit Clint Gutherson at the head of the pack in fitness and speed tests.

Brown is regarded as one of the hottest young talents in the game after emerging from Parramatta’s SG Ball winning team last year to play in the Under 20s grand final loss to Manly.
This year he made the step up to NSW Cup, playing the back end of the season against the men, and they say he didn’t just handle it, he excelled.
It remains to be seen how quick his transition into the NRL will be and there is no doubt he has some tough competition ahead of him in Mitchell Moses, Corey Norman and young Jaeman Salmon all vying to play in the halves.
But those who have watched Brown’s development closely have no doubt this teenager is a star in the making.
O’Neill was reluctant to put any unnecessary expectation on the youngster.
“He has shown all the attributes of someone you want around your club,” O’Neill added.
“We see him as a valuable member of the squad, not only in the future but actually right now and one we would expect has a strong future at our club.”
