We had signed him for 3 or 4yrs and let him go the following. We would of been paying part of contract for sure. And Rooster got themself a bargain.
Unless he was on much more than minimum salary we wouldn't have been subsidising him at the Roosters. This only happens when trying to create room in the salary cap. A bloke on near minimum can just be shelved in reserve grade.

My impressions of Matterson when he was here were that he’d wind up a Bryce Cartwright clone. Good with ball but a lettuce leaf in defence. He’s gone ok with Tigers. I seriously don’t see how he’s anywhere near Origin though
He won a grand final last year and then starred against Penrith a couple of weeks before Origin. That's all it takes to stand out from all the other fringe Origin players. If we were still playing well at Origin time we'd have a couple of players in the frame as well.

But was he even really a fringe Origin player to begin with in order to stand out?

Nearly anyone could be a fringe Origin player. Tim Mannah played Origin when he had far less experience than he does now ffs

Is he a step up on Mahoney though?
We need an experienced backup for Mahoney (i.e. an Isaac De Gois) not a replacement rookie with less games than Reed. And besides, we have Schneider coming through hopefully in the next 12 months.
Met Isaac recently. What a nice man. Told him he was one of the toughest players I’ve seen play the game.

Well Twal had Jnr, Mannah, Wicks, Peni and Alvaro ahead of him.

Matterson was a 6 and only put on size after he left the club. IMHO at 6 he was just a Daniel Wagon link man and edge defender. He really offered nothing in attack plus we had Corey Norman.

If you guys couldn't see that he was going to be a backrower then WTH are you watching? He was always destined for the forwards and with his size and ball skill level plus goal kick ability, the potential to be a good one given time and a chance.

Matterson couldn’t even see it himself. He wanted to be a half.
Seems it took him moving to another team and having a second club to tell him he’s not good enough there for him to realise it.

Not the point. Plenty said he'd be a first grader.

How many said he'd be NSW 18th man and a bees dick off actually being selected for Origin as a back rower? How many saw him play and thought he'd be the high quality defender out wide that he's become? Anyone who claims to is lying.

Yes Matterson is also very, very good, but I feel he may end up a backrower.

I would of never let Matterson, Twal or Junior go.

Maybe if the lower grade players were seeing a coach that had faith in them and blooded from within instead of recruiting similar players from outside, they would feel there was a future here. If BA had of elevated someone like Twal or Matterson, they may still be here for less then what it cost to recruit someone else.

You know my answer to that one.

And you know my response to yours.

Tepai has been named in the emerging blues side 3 times so far and he is only 23. Matterson is actually older than him.

Sorry, but I rate Freddy’s judgement over yours.

The 2018 Emerging Blues squad (in club and alphabetical order) is:

Payne Haas (Brisbane Broncos)

Tevita Pengai Jr. (Brisbane Broncos)

Michael Lichaa (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs)

Nick Cotric (Canberra Raiders)

Jayden Brailey (Cronulla Sharks)

Kyle Flanagan (Cronulla Sharks)

Jessie Ramien (Cronulla Sharks)

Lachlan Croker (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)

Jack Gosiewski (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)

Brian Kelly (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)

When bloke's like Brian Kelly and Tyrrel Fuimaono make the list, it doesn't exactly scream that Fittler is the greatest of judges either...

You're a hard task master. So he needs to compile a list of potential Blues players with a 100% conversion rate to get your acknowledgement that he's a good judge ?

Just saying that you can't denigrate someone else's judgement of player X because Coach Y didn't list him in an emerging rep team... To top it off, you're then defending Fittler for picking spuds like Fuimaono in the list saying "he can't get em all right"... And what's with that list anyway - there's more bloke's in it than missed out on it. It's like a "hooray for everything" squad where people get in if they can successfully tie their own shoelaces...

There's been plenty of coaches who have had questionable judgement in terms of player talent over the years... I mean, hell, our own Brad Arthur re-signed Will Smith....
